I argue that rally, not the Indianapolis 500, is the greatest spectacle in motor racing. Yes, the fans seem to stage their own contest to see who can be the most foolish. I like watching it over any other these days. Great stuff.
I went to Pikes Peak two years ago and saw a spectator nearly get collected by Sebastien Loeb. Literally crossing the road right in front of him. Half a second slower and he could have been dead. One other spectator was standing too close to the road trying to get video and got her leg taken out by another unlimited class vehicle. Unfortunately, that was the last year they allowed full race course spectating on the mountain. Now it is only allowed in designated areas.
Watch Sebastien's run at 0:46-0:47 into this video and you can see the guy just making it across the road.
It's all for the buzz & just part of the inherent Darwinian Game. True rally fans live it by watching them up close & know if they watch them, Be quick or be Dead!!
Higgins took a stock Subaru WXR STi around the TT lap. Its just insane. Only mod was roll cage and high performance brake pads.
Take a look, its just breath taking driving.
