Rear Hydraulic shock lower bushing

Hello everyone,

Newly registered member of the forum (I have been browsing for months). I live in Rhode Island, US, and own a 1992 500E with 165k miles.

I am currently working on the SLS system. One of the accumulators is shot, so I am replacing both, as well as all of the bushings at the top and bottom of the shocks.

I have pulled out the rear hydraulic shocks and it appears that the lower bushings are in need of replacement. I am aware that in order to put a new bushing in, the old one needs to be pressed out with a special tool.

Does anyone know the part number for that lower bushing? I am not talking about the bushings at the top of the shock, on either side of the chassis (I am replacing those as well, and already have them).
Also, would any shop be able to press the old out and press the new one in? Or would I need to take it to MB dealer?

I appreciate any help, great forum!

As far as I know, the lower hydrostrut bushings are not available for purchase so you may have to fabricate your own replacement. Getting them out is another issue. You can't just press them out, BTDT. I can't recall at the moment if there is a snap ring or not holding them in or if the casting is crush formed when the bushing is installed at the factory. Clean them up as much as possible and post some pix...

Any good indy MB or suspension shop ought to be able to press out the bushings and press new ones in, for a very small cost if you bring in all the involved parts. Like Glen, I don't know how they are attached/retained but you are probably correct that they are pressed in with a crush fit.

The two bushings that fit at the top of each rear strut (either side of the chassis) are another one of those "chassis rubber" parts that are nearly always overlooked by owners and 9 times out of 10 are in dire need of replacement. I'd put these in the same league as motor and transmission mounts, and replacement of these bushing will do WONDERS for the ride of the car. It's hard to believe how much of a difference these four little rubber donuts can make in the quality of ride and handling of the car. Cannot be emphasized enough !!

Good luck! and :welcome:

Cheers,
Gerry

The lower rear shock bushing is NOT available to purchase new from MB, or any other normal aftermarket source; as there is no Mercedes part number for that bushing. As Glen said, you'd have to find (or fabricate) a custom aftermarket bushing. Sorry for the bad news!

Your looking at about 380 for a new strut you may try energy suspension or BDS for a urethane replacement. But be careful the lower portion is aluminum so you may damaged them trying to press out and press in a bushings could be the reason they do not offer a bushing kit for the liability aspect.

Check also with 2phast for a used strut assembly he is breaking a car viewtopic.php?f=30&t=394
