REAR IMPACT STRIP PART NUMBER

I am trying to source a rear impact strip for my late 1992 build/early 1993 registered 500E. The part number I have is: 124 885 12 21.

As I understand it, the rear bumper impact strip remained unchanged throughout the production run of the E500Es, whereas the "standard" W124's impact strip changed at the time of the face lift?

Can I assume that any impact strip from a pre-facelift W124 will fit my 500E?

I have found one - allegedly from a 1990 W124 saloon, but the part no. given is 124 885 03 21.

Does anyone know if it will fit my 500E?

Many thanks.

Stephen

IIRC the rear impact strips on the 500E were different part numbers, unique to the 036 chassis, due to the wider rear fender flares. I don't have the EPC handy to confirm.

But yes, all E500E had the same bumper/impact strip shape through end of production. Pre-facelift were textured black, facelift were smoother and painted.

I also don't know if a standard 124 piece can be made to fit on the 500E or not.

I'm having a real run-around trying to track down a replacement rear impact strip for my 500E (I mean here the "centre" strip which runs through the middle of the larger bumper structure).

Gsxr has confirmed that these strips had different p/n's from "normal" W124s, and that they remained unchanged throughout the production of the E500Es - whereas on the "normal" W124s, the design changed at the time of the face-lift.

I had heard that impact strips from any non face-lift W124 would fit a 500E, but this now appears to be incorrect.

Can anyone definitely confirm that any impact strip from any non-E500E (face-lift or otherwise), will not fit an E500E?

Thanks.

Unfortunately I don't think a non-E500E rear bumper rail will work. Checking in the EPC ---

124.036 (E500E)
  • prefacelift - 124.885.12.21
  • postfacelift - 124.885.12.21 (same part # but must be painted)
124.032 (300E/E320)
  • prefacelift - 124.885.03.21
  • postfacelift - 124.885.13.21 (different part number, because the "ends" are substantially longer)

Thanks, Jlaa for that detailed info!

I'm obviously going to have to keep searching for the E500E specific part!
