For the last several years my daily classics have been a V126 sedan (560SEL) or the W124 with the M103 3.0 or recently the M119. This includes winter driving as well. Now I don’t typically drive them on salted roads but I live in the country and my house is off the highway about 2.5 miles on a maintained gravel road. It’s all up hill to the top so getting up is always a challenge. My cars get 4 good snow tires before the season and this year I’m running Blizzaks which is a favorite.

The county didn’t plow after receiving a few inches last night and it was a heavy snow so those who drive in the snow understand what I’m talking about. We are talking good snow for making snowballs. This snow is the hardest to drive in because if you are not the first person to make tracks you are basically stuck in the last set of tracks unless you can move enough to cut your own. I knew coming back up this morning would take everything I had to make it so I followed gsxr’s advice and disconnected the RF wheel speed sensor while I was in town To disable ASR. Let’s just say coming back up was pure joy with steering input and throttle steer. This is where the fun is at driving a slow car fast. Rear wheel drive is the best followed by all wheel drive.

Rear wheel drive & throttle steer is great, I grew up with that myself. My first 3 cars were all Ford Escort MK I and their F/R weight ratio are really in the featherweight territory at the rear end. And with a rigid rear axle and leaf springs it could be challenging - but a looot of fun for a 18 yo lad!

I have mostly driven with Nokian studded tires, mainly for their pioneering stud technology, but also for safety due to the winter conditions I live in. Over the years I have also learned to be picky with the tire pressure, by running a bit lower pressure giving better traction in most conditions. In the other end you sacrifice a little bit of the stability at higher speeds, so it depends on the conditions where most of the driving happens.
