SA brakes upgrade dust/splash shields

When doing the SA brake conversion I've read that the rear dust/splash shields need to be trimmed. What is the option? Would the dust/splash shields from the R129 SL600 fit, front&rear? I don't want to hear that swapping shields is labour intensive, I know that. I just want to know whether the shields mentioned will fit the 500E.

Yes. The late version shields bolt on without any difficulty once the rear axle flanges (hubs) are removed from the wheel carriers. You probably already know this, but for those that don't you will need to have new rear wheel bearing kits at hand because the rear wheel bearings are destroyed upon removal of the axle flanges.

FYI, the correct current part numbers for the larger plates are: Left 210-420-14-44 and Right 210-420-15-44

Make sure you need them before doing the swap! 1992 (USA model year) cars have the small shield that requires cutting or replacement. However, MB standardized on the larger shield during 1993 (USA model year) production, and cars with the larger shield will clear the 300mm SA rear rotor without modifications. All facelift (E500's) should have the larger shield. I haven't been able to pinpoint the date or chassis number where the switch occurred in 1993, but B891xxx had the larger shields...

Old post, but what its the part number for old rear dust shields? I think my car has those old ones and EPC/Xentry shows only the larger dust shield.. I'm about upgrade SA brakes..

Not sure if that the right part number in highlight because EPC parts search yields this:

There were some part number rolls related to the shields. I'm also not sure if the smaller shields (1991-1992 500E, 278mm) are still available new.

@jnes, do you want SMALL shields, or LARGE ones?

I bet that SA brakes need large ones? And those P/N should be above? Just curious to see what are the small shield part numbers..

Maybe I just try to install SA caliper and see will it fit without modifications.

SA calipers will fit fine, even on the "small" 278mm dust shields used on the 036 from beginning of production until roughly September 1992 production. By Oct-1992, all 036 standardized on the larger 300mm dust shields, even with 278mm brakes.

If your car is an earlier production with smaller shields, they either need to be cut / trimmed to clear the 300mm SA rear rotors, or replaced with the larger shields (210-420-14-44 and 210-420-15-44). Shield replacement is a PITA as it destroys the wheel bearings upon removal, and requires some special tools and/or hydraulic press.

Note: Shield p/n's 06/07 supercede to 14/15. This supercession only appears in the EPC for certain chassis, I don't know why. AFAICT both are for 300mm discs.
