September 5-7 Atlanta Get-Together

...and when JerseyGirl drove us home, the engine ran 86 degrees! I think we had a stuck thermostat and intermittent cap which cleared with all the attention. We'll still be replacing fan clutch, flush and fill and new thermostat regardless.

She likes me better. :-)

I had a great time, everyone! I neglected to mention that we were actually on hallowed ground while inspecting the vehicles. You were in the very same work area, and the cars were on the very same 2 lifts that accommodated the "$9000 tuneup" mentioned in the article below. If you're a lover of personal transportation, a motorhead with a libertarian-ish political philosophy, and a passionately held disdain for the nanny state, realizing that it's never about "doing good", it is always about dumbing down and taking control, there is no way to overstate the magnificence of this. It stands as additional evidence in favor of something that I have thought and stated often, frequently passionately to the point of argument, just about forever. That something is this: The most useful cars for just about any endeavor on public roads is actually a car not some hopelessly compromised "exotic".
And that it was always just about self evident that Mercedes-Benz makes the best cars

I'll try to do a bit of a recap here.

I think I counted a total of six cars over the weekend (seven or eight if you counted Jono's multiple cars at the shop). We also had alydon's stunning & award-winning AMG W126 5.4-liter sedan drop by on Saturday.

We had the following folks attend at various points throughout the weekend - apologies if I missed anyone. If their name is in green, they had an .036 in attendance:

  • Jono (Atlanta area)
  • vatc5637 (from Virginia)
  • Trae and wife (from North Carolina) - brought new 124 cabrio
  • whitehawk & Jersey Girl (from Tennesee)
  • gerryvz (from Texas)
  • Klink and Klinkette (from Atlanta area)
  • alydon (from Atlanta area)
  • Sheward (from Atlanta area)
  • mbman (from 500Ecstasy days, from Atlanta area)
  • Quicksilver500 (from Atlanta area) - dunno if he had his 500?

Did I miss anyone?

On Friday, folks started gathering at Jono's place in the early afternoon, where Jono's team was finishing up work on the front end of vatc's car (upper strut mounts, drag link/idler arms, control arm bushings, new front struts, etc.). Klink arrived after work and we ended up hanging around Jono's shop until about 9:30 PM, when some folks went off to dinner and others of us decided to head back to our hotel rooms to crash for the night.

Saturday dawned bright and early. We were hanging out in the Service Department at Klink's dealership pretty much the entire day on Saturday - the first folks arrived there around 10 AM and we didn't end up leaving until I think around 8:00 PM. We worked on Trae's car; vatc's car (four-wheel alignment after he had his chassis rubber totally redone at Jono's shop on Friday); and whitehawk's/JerseyGirl's car in the shop. Then we drove from Klink's dealership to the area near Jono's shop, where several of us (Trae, myself, vatc) were staying. About 9:00 or so, we headed out to dinner at a delicious Mexican restaurant near Jono's shop in Lilburn and ended up closing it down, saying goodbye for the night at 10:30 PM !!

On Sunday morning most everyone went to the Caffeine & Octane gathering in Alpharetta, and we hung out there until about noon (our group was among the last folks there). From C&O we went to the nearby Cracker Barrel restaurant and ended up hanging out there for a great meal and conversation until about 2:30 PM. Unfortunately vatc, and Trae & his wife had to head back to Virginia, and North Carolina, respectively, early on Sunday morning so they were unable to join us at C&O and for lunch.

Under stormy and threatening skies, I had to drive to the Atlanta airport for a 4:45 PM flight (a full 45 minute drive from Alpharetta). My flight ended up being delayed almost three hours, so I didn't end up walking through my door until about 9:50 PM CT.

It was a great gathering. Loosely organized, but a lot of fun. Klink got the last remaining t-shirt from the 500Eboard West Coast Gathering as a partial gift for his general graciousness and for aligning vatc's car on his day off. He and his wife will be getting another gift from the group very soon.

It was a real treat to walk around Jono's shop and see all of the goodies that he has stashed away. Multiple M119s (LH, ME and CIS-E models), AMG M117s, rare exhaust parts and lots of other 126 and 124 goodies of all types.

Jono mentioned he will be moving to a new, and much larger shop next year in a building that he already owns. And he said that when he's all settled in, we'll plan to have a second gathering to help celebrate the new digs. So that will be something to look forward to in a year or so, and another reason for the southern and east coast E500E folks to get together.

I spent a fair bit of time with vatc in his car driving to and from Klink's dealership, and really enjoyed getting to know him. It's awesome to put a name/face to an internet forum name and to learn about what folks do for a living and what their outlook on life is. And of course it was great to see folks like Trae, sheward and Jono who I'd met last year at the MBCA StarFest in Alabama (and Trae before that during a visit he made to Houston).

So, lots of fun and something to look forward to again for next year. It was a great year for 500Eboard-members to get together -- three different meetings on both coasts of the US and in Germany.

Cheers,
Gerry

Gerry, Thanks for coming to our town, I have enjoyed meeting you, and other .036 owners, Hope to see all of you again soon, enjoyed our limited conversation. Enjoyed Jonathan, Klink and Drew, we need a regular gtg.

Hi Rich,

:welcome5:

Glad to see you here. Looking forward to coming back to Atlanta for a future GTG.
I don't feel you shown/enjoyed any "Southern Hospitality" having to stay in a room, rental car, find your own way from the airport, (not that it slowed you down), give me some notice, I'll pick you up, and you can ride my 500, crash my pad if you care too. The 500 doesn't see much light of day anyway.

We have plenty to spare over here in Texas :) You should come over for the F1 race.

But definitely looking forward to the next time in Atlanta!!

Actually, and surprisingly, when we were out looking at Al's car, I did not take any photographs of it. I think I was too ga-ga on it to take photos.

Should have, but didn't. Sorry about that.:lightning:

The lower picture looks like it was taken in Palm Springs.

Ken,

You are absolutely right. Where else could you find this very unattractive background for a photo shoot. The car is the only good thing in the pics.

What a great looking 126 and it's and an AMG to boot.

Guys,

Thanks for posting these photos. It would have been a shame to have missed them.

Take Care
