Signal Red vs Imperial Red

I have never seen both colors next to each other. It is doubtful you will ever see a Signal Red and Imperial Red E500E next to each other unless you bring a signal red E500 to my house. I believe I have the only Imperial Red E500 in the country and perhaps on the planet.

The first picture is Signal Red and the second is Imperial Red. I like them both and find the differences subtle at best. It appears from wiki that Signal Red lowers are also signal red while Imperial Red lowers are Paprika. I can confirm that my 1994 Imperial Red has paprika lowers. I've not seen a Signal Red car in person so I cannot confirm.

Bumping this thread as I was curious about Imperial red - I don't think I've ever seen that colour on a w124 until today - a 220CE which I bought. Here is one poor quality facebook photo the seller had:

The coupe needs some work for sure possibly an engine upgrade too. But the imperial red colour will stay I quite like it

FWIW.....I had a '95 E320 wagon painted recently with an MB factory red and the term MB used for the color was Garnet Red. I'll have to see if I can get the paint code and a pic posted. I would say Garnet Red has more maroon in it than orange.

Damn nice car JC220.....and color.

Garnet Red (aka Almandine) is much darker, closer to a burgundy, and is metallic. One of my 036's is Garnet Red.

:apl:

Thanks MB V8!

GSXR - I have an almandine red 300E-24 as well. It is closer to a burgundy as you say; quite a dark red but very nice too. I have not heard of almandine being reffered to as Garnet before. It's likely the lower claddings are painted body colour on the c124 I bought (not factory) but that doesn't bother me really.

Here are three pic's of one my favorite E500's. This car belongs the a friend of mine that got me interested in 124's 10 years ago. Its Garnet red, and the lighting that afternoon really shows off the color well, a dark afternoon with the sun peeking through the clouds. This specific E500 was shown at the 1992 Detroit Auto show, then sold to the president of the MBCA at that time. My friend is the 3rd owner, and this was the 1st 500E I had ever seen, and he let me drive it for about 15 minutes. I was so afraid of doing something wrong, I really didn't get to feel it's potential. Previously, I had seen this car for sale in an ad, and off offhandedly mentioned it to my friend. He simply asked me where I saw the ad, (Star Mag I think, it's been a long time), and I never had a clue that he was highly motivated to buy it. He actually flew out to CA where the car was at that time and test drove it, and I believe bought it on the spot. I do remember him asking what car carrier company I used to ship my CE from CA to NY, and never thought anything about it. A couple of months later he drives to work in this 500E, wow. I have a few pic's of this 500 with my only Mercedes at the time, my 92 300CE. I had forgotten this car has evo wheels on it, and the more I look at these pic's the more I'm starting to appreciate their looks on a E500E.
