Right now I am doing a sample "transfer" of the site files and data to the new dedicated server. With the exception of the images database, which is somewhere around 12 GB in size, the rest of the site's files downloaded in about 15 minutes. The next job will be to upload everything to the new server, and then launch the forum on the new server to see if it runs OK and as it should.

If it does, then I will do one more "test" transfer of data and then execute the "production" transfer. This is what I referred to above where I will "freeze" the site so that the data I download and then transfer over to the new server is cumulative and not missing anything. For the sample transfers I don't really care - it's close enough at this point and mainly I just want to ensure my process is correct and accurate for actually doing the transfer.

This site (for better or worse) remains 100% unaffected by these operations.

I'll keep you all up to speed on how things progress as we get closer to the cut-over date. I don't know when that will be but it will likely be when I am in Europe...

I am really sorry for all of this hassle but I think in the end everything will be better and we will have complete control over things.

As a newbie to 124's and with a recent acquisition of a '92, Steaks and Cigars local style, are most certainly on me Gerry. I'm very appreciative of all the knowledge so easily accessible on the board and thank you for keeping it alive & well.

I spoke with the hosting provider this morning, a German firm called 1&1. It turns out that their entire web hosting operation is currently down and experiencing difficulties. This could be a contributing factor to the issues of the site. In any case, I am moving ahead with the backup of the site and migration. Please stay patient - 500Eboard is NOT going away !! Cheers, Gerry

It has been a very rough few days for me, not only because of the site largely being down, but because I have to prepare for my GVZ Euro Tour 2014 (leaving tomorrow) and still have to get things done around the house before I travel. It has been TRULY stressful over the past four days working nearly non-stop in my limited free time to diagnose the issues related to the site and its performance, talking with the hosting company, ordering additional capabilities based on their supposed "observations" of what was happening with the site on the back-end, and spending hours and hours researching the situation.

I slowly came to the conclusion yesterday, that the problems were NOT the fault of this site and its software, but rather the fault of the hosting company, 1&1. Further research and diagnostics today confirmed this issue.

At this point, 7PM Central Time on Wednesday, it appears that the site is now getting back to normal. The good thing is that no data has been lost, and the site continued to operate during the difficult times although it was slow and often threw up errors. However, no data was lost as I said, and that is the most important thing. I also had recent backups of the site and database here in multiple locations, so this time I was prepared (and was getting ready to engage another hoster) to re-start where we left off if I had to.

I will continue to watch the situation closely over the coming days, and from overseas. I have database backups and software copies at the ready, which I can pull down from the cloud and install on a new host if I need to. It would require about one night to restart the site from scratch (using backups) so the actual downtime would not be much.

Thanks to you all for your support and private/public words of encouragement during this difficult time. Know that I was honestly and truly working diligently to make sure the site was as available as possible, and well down the road of exploring and executing alternatives to bring things back up. I still may transition to a more reliable hosting company like Rackspace or Amazon AWS in the future - I need to investigate pricing a little more.

Another alternative would be to to what Scott Shell did and host the site on a machine in my house, but I am not inclined to do that, but rather just to maintain regular backups of everything.

Please let me know if you observe any further issues, and know that we may not be out of the woods yet until 1&1 gets their act together. I am relieved to know that none of the software running this site has been the issue, nor have we run out of memory or storage space.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you over the next few weeks, in Germany. Particularly to meet esodnehoh for the first time!!

Cheers,
Gerry

More than anything, enjoy your trip! If the site has issues, we will all survive until you have the time to get it fixed. We know that it is a source of pride for you as well it should be, but by all means, don't fry your mind before or during your trip! Right now, the site is rocking like Elvis again. Thanks, and enjoy. Wish I was going too!
:klink:

Relax and enjoy your trip. The site being down gives us reason to actually WORK on our cars (instead of posting about it)..... :-)

Thanks Gerry. Things seem to be back to normal. Have a great trip and I can't wait to see the read about it and see the pictures.

I would advise against considering hosting at your home. Unless you have the coin to dump into a highly redundant (clustered) and fault tolerant server. The space required, cooling, noise and battery backup solution (min of two hour run time) make this solution expensive and unconventional for management in a home environment.

Great job Jerry, It be all back to normal...
The Euro is still stubbornly high...1.35 It's not going to come down until the econ improves and we raise interest rates to fend off inflation....

anyway, have a great trip to DE...

Enjoy your trip and worry about it when you get back - we will all still be here

I just arrived in Germany and all seems to be well with the site's health, from here in Freising (just north of Munich).

I also just re-enabled the Tapatalk software, so those of you who access the site from your iOS or Android mobile device should be good to go with Tapatalk again. I checked it from my Samsung Galaxy SIII and it seems to be working fine.

I brought a rear-end from a 300SEL 6.3 with me in a big box for the car belonging to a friend, as well as the cam oiler tubes for Bing -- which I will deliver to him either in London or at the .036 meeting in two weeks.

Cheers,
Gerry

Gerry, did you manage to extract the ring+pinion, or did you bring the complete diff?

:)

I was able to extract the ring in about 30 minutes. The pinion required a special "cross" type spanner tool to wrest the nut off the threaded end of the pinion shaft, which I didn't have. I soaked it in PB and tried to drive it off using a screwdriver tip and lots of sharp hammer blows, but thought the better of it and decided to just bring the pinion along with part of the housing that it resided in. The good thing is that I just boxed both pieces up and shipped it free on the plane.

When I was clearing German customs (Zoll) at the Munich airport this morning, there were three armed Zoll agents. One of them saw the size of the box on my cart and asked about it. I told him in German what it was, and he asked me if it was commercial or privat. I answered "Privat" and then he asked me the value of it, and I said "about USD $100" and he was satisfied with that. I added it was for an oldtimer as I passed him and then I was on my way. I'll deliver it to my friend on Monday.

Over the weekend I'm going to help pick up a year-long project that another friend has been working on -- a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated M103. He used the crankshaft from an OM603 (diesel) along with BMW connecting rods (which were used especially because of their 140mm length), which were machined slightly to make room for new bearings and also at the end to clear the bottom of the pistons. Stock pistons and rings were used. This is something of an experimental motor.

I will take and post some photos of this when I start my GVZ Euro Tour 2014 thread. We will be leaving for the Alpentour on Thursday afternoon and I'll be driving the silver 1970 280SL Pagoda again this year.....

Gerry , thanks for all your hard work on this site ! A few pints of Guinness and a Lebanese, Indian meal or fish & chips ( your choice) on mois . See you soon !

A new version of the Tapatalk plug-in has been released, with some new features and also some bug fixes.

I'll plan to install this tonight onto the site. No site downtime will be required for the installation of the new Tapatalk software. However, it would be a good idea for those of you who use Tapatalk, to log out, quit the app, and then log back in after I perform the software upgrade on the server side of things.

I'll let you know when I've completed the upgrade, so you can do this.

Cheers,
Gerry

Gerry,

Keep us updated on the 3.6 build. Very cool . Did he lighten the crank so the rbf would match up w the higher rpm and lighter pistons. Did he hind a bmw piston which fits??

The Tapatalk software on the server has now been updated. I'd recommend that you log out of the software on your mobile client and log back in.

:update:

All:

Over the next couple of weeks, I'm going to be taking some steps to make the 500Eboard forum more friendly to search engines.

What I mean by this is that the URLs for threads on the forum will include the title of the each thread, and we'll have capabilities on each page that include things like keywords that will help elevate 500Eboard information even more in the rankings of various search engines, making the site findable and usable by even more folks.

I'll detail specific changes and additions that we make to this end. There will be no downtime or other impact to the site by any of this -- it will be 100% transparent to everyone.

Secondly, I've decided to move ahead with the purchase of encryption capability for the site. This will take the form of a 500Eboard-specific SSL (secure sockets layer) certificate. This means that you will have the option to use https: to access the site. This is mainly a privacy and security thing, and also will be beneficial necessary for some longer-term plans I'm cooking up for things like group buys and purchases that can be integrated through the site, as well as the security of information in the 500E database.

In practical terms, it will mean that you will see the little "padlock" in your URL window of your browser when you access the site, just as when you access sites like your bank, or Amazon.com, or eBay/PayPal or other "secure" sites. It provides a layer of security and peace of mind that the information being transmitted to and from 500Eboard.com to you is secure and "trusted."

Again, I'll inform everyone when things get implemented. It will be transparent to everyone and won't have any impact to the site.

Cheers,
Gerry

There's a new version of VaultWiki (our Wiki software) out and it's been tested and vetted, so I'm now comfortable with installing it. It has a lot of bug fixes and I know that some folks have had difficulty seeing attachments on the Wiki software and/or viewing their avatar, etc. Also some have not been able to access it for some reason.

So I'm going to install the new software late tonight after I do the site database backup. It will probably be 15-20 minutes of site downtime while this "upgrade" is happening. As seen at the bottom of your screen, the current version of the software I have installed is version 3.0.2 Patch Level 1. The new version I'll be installing is 4.0.0 Release Candidate 1.

If you have been having problems with the Wiki, in terms of not being able to view attachments, or get access to it for some reason, or have seen other bugs, please send me a PM and let me know. I will check your profile and make sure that you have full access to everything (which everyone should, by default, if you're a registered member of the site).

Thanks!
Gerry

The Wiki portion of the site has been taken off-line until further notice, due to some complications experienced during the upgrade process.

No data has been lost, and rest of the site remains 100% on-line and accessible as normal.

I'll keep everyone updated on progress. The wiki is a very large and complex piece of software, and this is a major upgrade. The software upgrade cost $60, but should be good for the next couple of years.

I hope this doesn't inconvenience anyone until I get things back up.

Thank you for your patience!

Cheers,
Gerry

I finally had some time late this morning to attempt a re-installation and re-upgrade of the Wiki software to version 4.0. It is now installed correctly. I am very glad to get it installed because it was NOT easy, and I had a raft of errors that I had to write some new software code (from scratch) to address properly. Which meant I had to brush up on my php (computer scripting language) programmming and mySQL database administration skills.

There is still much work to do, in terms of migrating and importing the existing Wiki pages, data and images into the new 4.0 installation. And then I have to configure it with all the proper settings, so please stay tuned. I'm going to try to get it all completed today, if possible.

Thanks for your continuing patience on this upgrade. It's been a far more complex upgrade than I've experienced with even the regular forum software.

The reward should be a nicer Wiki setup with more features and functionality.

Cheers,
Gerry

The Wiki is now up and fully functional. No data was lost in the importation process. This was the most painful and time-consuming software upgrade I've done to the site in 5+ years.... and it's still not 100% right.

I am working out some configuration issues over the next few days ... for example, on some of the tables the in-line images aren't being displayed, though the images are linked properly. That kind of thing.

Bear with me, but feel freel to use the Wiki or start a new page, whatever you want to do.

Tonight I'm going to update the Tapatalk software. This should take about 10 minutes and won't require any downtime for the site, so no one should notice anything.

Also, I have it at the top of my TO-DO list to update the Wiki to ensure the photos are properly re-linked and embedded in the wiki entries. It's a lot of detail work more than anything. There is still quite a bit of configuration work with the new version of the Wiki, but this should go rather quickly now that the base software has been upgraded. They just came out with a new version of the software last week, but this is a minor update as well. Thanks for your patience on this. I promise to get to it right after I get back from Atlanta on Sunday.

Lastly .... I have been putting off the purchase of the secure site (SSL) capability, but it should be going live soon. This means that the transfer of all data to and from the 500Eboard.com server will be encrypted to the same standard as any online transaction (i.e. your bank, amazon.com and other online merchants, etc.). Just a bit more added safety and security. Can't have enough of that in today's world!

Cheers,
Gerry

Folks,

I'm finally getting around to fixing the Wiki. The new wiki software upgrade requires a massive amount of reconfiguration and re-swizzling of things, so it's going to continue to be a work in progress.

I've begun going through the individual posts to re-link and display the photos. This is tedious/manual work so bear with me on it.

In the meantime, I have re-enabled the Wiki in the list of forums on the main page. The Wiki is also available from the "Wiki" link in the menu bar at the top of the screen under the title image.

I've got another minor / updated version of the Wiki software to update to tonight, as well as another version of the Tapatalk software to update. I am working directly with the developer of the Wiki software to assist in getting things configured the way I want them.

We didn't lose any data, and all of the images and info is there -- some of it is just not being displayed the way I want it to. We'll get it fixed and correct over time.

If you are having issues accessing the Wiki, please let me know. There may be some permissions issues and I will fix them if you tell me about them.

Thanks
Gerry

The Tapatalk software has been updated from version 5.1.0 to 5.2.0.

Here's a summary of the changes:

  • Added more support for profile fields in native registration
  • Added ability to disable ads for specific usergroups in Tapatalk options (admin CP)
  • Added support for vimeo bbcode to display video
  • Fixed a user reply topic/post display issue
  • Fixed a SSO registration failure issue

I thought some of you might be interested to see just a little bit about what things look like behind the scenes, deep in the bowels of the 500E administrative structure.

I've attached a view of part of the 500Eboard admin control panel, which shows some vital statistics and information about the forum. There are literally hundreds of configuration screens and areas for tweaking the characteristics of the forum, which I really can't show because it's all too extensive. But this attachment gives a little insight into the forum's "guts."

As you can see, the image database is now over 10 GB in size. Back in 2011, when I converted the site TO this vBulletin software from the free phpBB software, the image database was just a hair over 3 GB in size. So the growth is just tremendous.

The size of the forum's actual posts is now 175+ MB. I back this up every Friday at 5PM Central time, and it compresses to around 50 MB in size. My very first backups dating back to early 2009 were only a couple of hundred KB in size. Pretty crazy, the growth in the forum over the past 5+ years (November 30 will be this forum's sixth anniversary).

Anyway, enjoy!

If you have any questions, fire away !

Cheers,
Gerry

FYI all -- going to run a quick update to the Tapatalk forum software in a few minutes.

This shouldn't affect the site operation at all, but wanted to let you know if you are using Tapatalk on your phone or tablet, that the site may be inaccessible for 5-10 minutes or so.

Cheers,
Gerry

All:

Just wanted to give you a heads up...

I'm going to be installing three new software modules tonight:

- updated version of vBulletin
- updated version of VaultWiki
- updated version of Tapatalk

I expect that the site will be down for around 30-45 minutes or so. I am aiming for around 11 PM Central Time tonight to do these updates. The Tapatalk update won't require any site downtime to perform.

The vBulletin update is a minor "dot" version update, not a major update.

The VaultWiki is a significant update and comes after I've skipped several interim "release candidate" updates from the beta software that I have installed. I am hoping it will correct some of the more egregious flaws with that package. I have been working with the developer in recent months to identify issues when I upgraded, and he has been fairly responsive about getting them fixed.

Cheers,
Gerry

Tapatalk update has been performed.

If you are interested, the following fixes are included:

  • Fixed the Thanks / Likes features that were not working.
  • Fixed SQL injection issue.
  • User profiles now show Infractions.
  • Removed the option to restrict specific usergroups from logging in via the Tapatalk app. This brings Tapatalk in line with normal browser behavior.

:update:

Hello 500E Runners ...

I have begun receiving e-mails from the vBulletin folks about an upcoming release of Version 5 of the vBulletin forum software. It appears that vBulletin will, when Version 5 is released, probably curtail active support for version 3.X of the software (which is what sites like Benzworld.org, MBWorld.com and Peachparts.com are using). At the same time, they will continue to enhance the current Version 4.X of the software that we are currently using. I expect they will continue to enhance Version 4 for at least the next 3-5 years, so we have a long life left on the current platform.

There are no plans at any time in the near- or mid-term future to move this site to the Version 5 software. There are several reasons for this:
  • The first version of vBulletin 5 will likely contain A LOT of bugs
  • The first version of vBulletin 5 does not contain as much functionality as the current Version 4 does
  • The add-ons we have (such as the vBulletin 4 CMS and VaultWiki, not to mention the add-ons that provide the "Thanks", enhanced Gallery, and random header image functionality, will NOT be compatible with vBulletin 5
  • There is significant cost involved to upgrade to the vBulletin 5 platform
Of course, there are other reasons too.

Some other things to mention, in terms of the long-range planning and scoping for 500Eboard.com. I have become increasingly disenchanted with the vBulletin platform since implementing it a little over a year ago. It is one hell of a large, bloated, and increasingly sizable piece of software -- much like Microsoft Windows has become over the years. The vBulletin folks have tried to add everything and the kitchen sink into the vBulletin 4 platform, and the result is a usable but really quite sizable and bloated platform, of which we realistically use perhaps 30% of the capability of. (How much of the functionality of Microsoft Word or Excel do you find yourself using, in real life?)

Furthermore, a few years back, the original company that created vBulletin, a firm called Jelsoft, was sold off to a larger company called "Internet Brands". Not long after this happened, the founders of Jelsoft (and the original creators of vBulletin) left the company and founded a new company and have created a new forum platform called XenForo. This software was introduced last year and is still in its infancy, but it is (from a software architectural standpoint) much more advanced, and the vBulletin creators were able to take much of what they learned from the creation of vBulletin and put it into the creation of XenForo.

With the advent of vBulletin 4 in late 2009, it became MUCH more of a commercial platform (with the intent of providing a platform to make money for forum operators and for Jelsoft/Internet Brands) and much less of a platform for hobbyists and such. All of this creates software code and overhead (which affects site performance) that is 100% unneeded for a forum of our type here.

Furthermore, one of the primary drivers of the adoption of vBulletin 4 for this site, was to provide a quick and seamless migration path in case the original 500Ecstasy forum ever surfaced -- 500Ecstasy was also based on vBulletin 4.X. With every passing month, it seems that the possibility of the content and brain-trust of the original 500Ecstasy ever surfacing becomes more and more remote. It is my desire to integrate all of that content with this site, but it also is becoming more and more out of date. Furthermore, the content here on THIS site has reached the point of critical mass as to where it can stand alone against the accumulated knowledge that was encapsulated at 500Ecstasy. The main value, in my opinion, of 500Ecstasy at this point in time is of historical information, as well as the contributions of certain members of that forum such as Talbir and LiquidIron.

Unfortunately though, it appears (and I fear) that 500Ecstasy content may well never see the light of day again. What a crying shame.

While I have no plans to adopt XenForo as the platform for this site, I am watching the maturation of the XenForo platform with interest. When it reaches full maturity, likely in the next 2-3 years, I will actively look at it as a POTENTIAL alternative platform, depending on the functionality and capabilities. There are also other modern and less-bloated forum platforms, such as the IPB (Invision Power Board) that are also fairly mature, notable, and worth considering at the point of any sort of future migration planning.

If, and ONLY if there is compelling reason to migrate, would we do so. And if the decision to change platforms were EVER made in the future, certainly it would be a gradual process, and as with the migration to vBulletin the members of this site would be kept well informed along the way.

I reiterate, there are NO current or future plans to migrate this forum platform away from vBulletin 4, or to adopt vBulletin 5.

However, I did want to give all of you a bit of insight into my long-term thinking. It is important to devote time to think about future plans, investigate alternatives and potential routes to take this great site into the future, and to stay abreast of current trends in forum platforms.

Thank you for your time and interest.

Cheers,
Gerry
I wanted to revisit & continue this post I made more than two years ago, about the future of the forum software. I've been visiting this topic from time to time, doing continuing research and looking at the longer-term future at the software that underpins this site.

What has happened over the past two years, is basically that all forward development on the vBulletin 4.X platform (the software that this forum runs on) has halted. The company that owns vBulletin, Internet Brands, has moved vBulletin 4.X development into strict "maintenance mode," which means that they are issuing perhaps 2-3 incremental updates each year that are focused on critical security patches and large software functionality bugs. Most all of the company's software development efforts are going into developing vBulletin 5.X. This is a major departure from the code used for the 4.X platform, and the 5.X software has seen VERY little "uptake" and migration from vBulletin 3.X and 4.X sites. A lot of the major MB forums out there, such as PeachParts and MBWorld, are still using the 3.X software. The Banzworld.org site recently migrated from vBulletin 3.X to the vBulletin 5.X software, and if you have looked at Banzworld lately, it is quite ugly and slow IMHO (not their fault).

As I said above, the vBulletin 5.X platform has had a LOT of bugs and has also been fairly poor on functionality in its early versions, and has not maintained even the same level of functionality as the existing 4.X software that we are on now !!

We need to have a solid path for the forum software to take this site well into the future, and I am continually NOT convinced that vBulletin is the path that this forum should continue on. I am sure that the vB 4.X software will continue to receive critical security and bug fixes for at least the next year or two, but it is clear that the company wants its clients to migrate to the 5.X platform. This would not be that difficult of a migration, BUT it would be an expensive upgrade because the cost of the 5.X platform is significantly higher than the "paid-for" cost of the software license that we currently have.

One other concern is the add-on Wiki software, which is specific to the 4.X software that we are using. The Wiki software company, called VaultWiki, is also offering versions of the Wiki software for the vBulletin 5.X and XenForo software platforms as well.

As I mentioned in the quoted post above, I have watched the development and evolution of the XenForo and IPB forum platforms with occasional interest. At the time I made that post above, the XenForo platform was at version 1.2.0. It is now at 1.4.0 and has acquired some significant new capabilities.

On my own, I am intending to download an evaluation copy of the XenForo software over the Holiday season and begin to play with it from an administrative standpoint, to check out how it works behind the scenes, and compare it to vBulletin in terms of usability, user interface and overall functionality. I hope to have my fellow system admins Glen, GSXR and Jelmer participating as part of this process -- and perhaps others who are interested in "kicking the tires" of another piece of software to see what it is like. We may find that it totally sucks and what we have is great !! And that is just fine if that is the case. However things progress, I will keep you all apprised here as to how it goes.

Again, as mentioned previously, I am NOT and have NO plans to migrate this forum or change its software at this time. However, I am going to begin the move into a stage of more active evaluation of alternative forum software platforms, because it has become clear over the past two-plus years that Internet Brands will not be substantively updating & continuing development on the vBulletin 4.X platform that powers this forum. It is important that this forum be up to date and modern, and attractive and easy to use as well. My best guess is that vBulletin 4.X still has 3+ years of good life left in it, with probably another 1-2 years of critical bug and security patches left. But we can "kiss off" any new functionality and features being implemented in the platform.

I hope this gives y'all some insight into the longer-term thinking about the site and how it will continue to evolve. November 30, 2014 marks the SIXTH anniversary of this site. This is about the point where 500Ecstasy was at, before it went down for good.

Thanks to all of you, it's been quite a [great] ride...... :e500launch:

Cheers,
Gerry

Gerry, as I am sure you realize, this is how software companies ensure their future profitability. I am sure we all defer to you as to what future package to utilize, but be reassured that if it does incur substantial investment to assure our continued viability, we are all willing to invest in the project. Just say the word.

There's no substantial investment required. It's just paying the hosting bill twice a year, and a new software license either for the vBulletin software or the Wiki software every other year or so.

Other than the glitch we had some time back with the hoster's servers (not the fault of this site or our software), which they finally fixed after 4-5 days, we've had very good site reliability overall.

Following up on my post above: I did a short trial of an on-line version of the XenForo software over the weekend, and it seemed very promising.

We'll continue to keep our eyes peeled as we look to the future of this great forum. I am looking forward to the 10-year anniversary of this site, which will be here in just 4 years from now.

As I have time, I'm also continuing to experiment with database structures to finally get two or three important things up and running on the site:

- a searchable .036 VIN database combined with my database of detailed info
- a searchable MB parts database
- a single page that allows querying multiple parts pricing sites simultaneously, for price comparisons

I know that MANY have thanked you before, however, we all collectively thank you for the massive amount of work you do for OUR benefit.
You have been very gracious with your time and resources over the years.
Without this site, and many of your "how to" instructions, I would not have been able to keep, maintain, and afford the stable that I currently have.

P.S. Keep those "how to" videos coming. . . please.

My next "HOW-TO" will be the lubrication (and replacement, if needed) of the door checks on the W124.

Re: Brief site downtime tonight

Future plans sound great and very useful. Looking forward. Thanks, Gerry.

As I had mentioned some time previous, I have (as of today) purchased an SSL certificate for the 500Eboard.com domain. This is an additional, annual cost of around $40.00 above what I am already paying.

Right now, all data that is sent from your computer to the 500Eboard.com server, and vice versa, is sent across the Internet as plain text. And that information probably hops across dozens if not hundreds of computers to get from your screen to the server. And it can be intercepted and read by anyone who has access to the data stream pertaining to that information. The SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) capability provides a secure, and trusted connection between your computer and the 500Eboard.com server that allows only those two computers to encode and decode data that is sent and received.

This SSL certificate will provide 256-bit data encryption, which is fairly strong though not NSA-proof security. However, it is as good as or better than any encryption that you would have with a secure online site -- for example, with your bank, or with PayPal, or with an e-commerce site such as Amazon.com or AutohausAZ.com.

When it is enabled, you will see the little padlock in the URL bar of your browser, as well as the "https://" moniker before the regular URL of the site. When you see these indicators, it means that all data going to and from the site and your computer is encrypted.

Encryption is important, and necessary, for any site that conducts e-commerce or where personal information is sent to a remote computer across the Internet. Although 500Eboard is NOT a commerce site, I have made the decision to put technology into place to provide the maximum level of security that is possible and reasonable. This should give people peace of mind and good confidence that their sessions with the 500Eboard are totally secure and confidential, and reasonably can't be read or eavesdropped upon.

In addition, it also provides a secure foundation for the future, in case we ever do offer e-commerce capabilities (such as selling 500Eboard T-shirts or tchochkies, etc.) where credit card or other sensitive data would be needed.

I have not yet "upgraded" the server with the new certificate, but will likely be doing this over the weekend. You should not see ANY site down-time or performance impact. You will, once the certificate is enabled and assigned to the domain, begin the see the padlock and "https" moniker at the URL bar. There should be no discernible performance hit to the site, meaning pages will load and be sent at virtually the same speed as they are now.

I hope this explains things a bit and that you appreciate the continuing investment and upgrades in the site infrastructure, with you in mind.

Happy Thanksgiving !!!

Cheers,
Gerry

It seems there are some issues with Wiki permissions that are not allowing folks (including myself) to post and add comments to Wiki entries.

I will work on fixing this today.

The ability to make comments for folks, to the Wiki entries, should be re-enabled for everyone. Please let me know if you don't see the "Quick Reply" area or "Reply" button in the Wiki entries.

Of course, you all have ability to change/edit Wiki entries, as well.

I will be working over the Thanksgiving holiday to re-embed the photos in the Wiki entries and tables in the proper locations where they were originally located.

Cheers,
Gerry

I am currently running a significant upgrade to the Wiki software as I type this. There won't be any site downtime, and the installation and test should be complete in the next 30 minutes.

I also updated the Tapatalk software for all you phone and tablet users.

Cheers,
Gerry

Hmm, haven't checked that out yet as I use the iPad when I'm in bed. Will check that out later tonight.

Make sure you have the latest version of the Tapatalk app for your phone/tablet downloaded !!
