Admin update: Price reduced from $22,000 to $19,900 in July 2013. Thread title updated. See post #21 below for details.

Update 2: Car is sold as of February 2014. See post #51 below.

Hello All, new here. Looking to sell my vehicle.

VIN = WDBEA36E6PB982931

1993 Mercedes 500E
Black Exterior
Black Interior
80,000 Miles.
Excellent running condition.
Very well maintained, with full maintenance history.
New tires. Continental Extreme Contact.
AMG E55 18” wheels. Wheels were powder coated less than a year ago, so they are like new.

Suspension was fully rebuilt less than year ago (5000 miles) with New Bilstein struts/shocks and front H&R springs and custom rate H&R Rear springs. Custom rear lower control arms were fabricated to assure proper comfort and riding height, yet the car still maintains the factory self-level system.

As you can see the front end has been updated to later model. It was done by a professional auto body shop, so no corners were cut. However, I do have ALL the original part, shall you have the interest to convert it back to factory. Other than that, car is 100% accident free, no other bodywork whatsoever.

One of the cleanest examples I’ve seen. Car has spent pretty much it’s entire life in Florida and Georgia. It does have a very small ding on the top left rear end, can be seen in the pictures. I believe I am the third owner.

Engine, transmissions, A/C system, windows, locks , brakes, ABS, traction control, heated seats and all other major components are in excellent working condition. The rear head rest, which is electronically controlled, isn’t working. It wasn’t working when I purchased the car, I never needed it so I hadn’t repaired it. Interior is in excellent condition. Leather has no rips no tare. Original factory radio system. Under the hood, the engine bay is clean, it’s completely stock under the hood. Factory exhaust. Car has no rust, or corrosion anywhere. Undercarriage is clean.

I absolutely love the car, and have enjoyed it for the past 2-3 years, just decided to try something else.

Please email me with any questions you may have. I will give you my cell number.

F7o@aim.com

No trades.

Asking price $21,900.00

I took the pictures with my cell phone, so please excuse the poor quality.

Car is located near Cleveland, OH

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $22k (Cleveland, OH)

AutoCheck report attached. Photos archived to forum.

Note that this is a very late build 1993, and therefore comes with the larger 320mm front brakes, which is a nice bonus. Also, the car is 040 Black (not the usual 199 Pearl Black).

This car was sold at least once if not twice in 2011, details are in this thread.

Jr, thanks again... appreciate the time on the phone. Hope we can put this deal together! ;-)
Look foward to hearing back from you.
Best,
Davie :)

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $22k (Cleveland, OH)

gsxr, thank you for the updates and posting the report. Really appreciate it.
Looking at the report, it seems as if there is a question about the ODO reading. This is because when I bought the car and took it to the the Emissions (Smog) check folks, they punched in 63,000 miles instead of 73,000. I have all the documents for the record. I would like to tget this removed from the report if I someone can tell me how.

Thank you.

What am I missing here? Based on "old" thread from Sept. 2011, the car was up for sale again on Autotrader. The new seller above states owning and enjoying the car for the past 2-3 years?

All I can think of is that VS70 and R1DER are the same person...? Maybe VS70 didn't sell it. Good question, though.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $22k (Cleveland, OH)

Could be. I sent him an email. I live in Cleveland. very interested, but price is way to high for the car.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $22k (Cleveland, OH)

Thanks to this forum, I have received some genuine inquires. 2 of them have to offered to buy it. As I discussed with two of the potential buyers, I am looking for the right buyer, who understand the vehicle and appreciate it for what it is.

Thank you.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $22k (Cleveland, OH)

Update.

I did have a buyer fly out and look at the car. He took the car to shop of his choice. Shop that inspected the car specialize in German cars. They said very good things about the car, but did come up with couple of concerns.
- Transmission has a very minor leak. According to them it's an easy fix.
- Driver side visor is little loose. I will address that.

The person who came to look at the car made some very positive comments about the car, saying that he has been in other 500Es and mine is the nicest one he has driven; however, he did point of couple spot that I overlooked.

Lugs have little bit of rust. I never thought this to be an issue, I have never seen a car of this age without rust on lugs, but perhaps this does matters to others.

There is a small spot of corrosion right under the right tail light. It is by no means rusted bad, but it's beginning to. Buyer will have to get it sanded down.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $22k (Cleveland, OH)

Per the previous thread that Dave mentioned, I have record of this car in my database, dating from August of 2011, when it was located in McDonough, GA. At that time it had 72,330 miles on the odometer.

Really no notes on the car, other than the following notation: "Listed by Fiat of South Atlanta. No price or any photos given."

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $22k (Cleveland, OH)

Gosh, I hope the rusty lugs isn't a huge deal-breaker....$100 gets all new ones.

Def not worth mentioning IMO. Def pulling the rear tailite and fixing the little bit of surface rust there by hand and a paint stick is all that needs to be done, but also, just IMO.

Your price seems fine, I hope you get it or close to it !

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $22k (Cleveland, OH)

Jimbo, thanks for the comments.
I am not sure what happened to that buyer. He flew to look at the car and said a lot of positive things but hasn't really made any moves. I hope hes fine.
I haven't really been in town, so I haven't been able to promote the car. I still have it and will list it on autotrader next.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $22k (Cleveland, OH)

looks like he has some friends running up the bids.
Wow, that is quite an accusation. Perhaps this is something you practice all the time so you feel I am doing it as well?

The car is still available for sale, but let me be clear, I am not 'giving' this car away. There are other cars available as well, if this car doesn't suit your desires, I am sure there are other that will.
I do love the car and would only let go of it if the price and buyer is right. I do have people approach me via email etc, but most are low-ballers.

I still have not had the time to market it properly, ebay was the easiest way to reach potential buyers, so I posted in there. Next it's going on BAT.

Thanks for the interest.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $22k (Cleveland, OH)

Anyone know ofa reputable shop to perform a PPI in Oberlin, OH? I’m working on purchasing thecar from the owner and has agreed to have the car inspected at the shop of my choice.
Any help wouldbe greatly appreciated. Thanks inadvance!

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $22k (Cleveland, OH)

Take the car to Sean Clark at Mercedes Benz of North Olmsted. He is a 27+ year Masetr Certified MB mechanic. Oberlin to their dealer ship is 30 mins. Nothing right near Oberlin. If car goes there, I will put my eyes on it for you if you like.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $22k (Cleveland, OH)

Hello All,

Though I have couple of interested people, the car is still for sale.

I wanted to posted the document that shows DMV error. I don't know how that escaped my eye that day, but it did, but here is what happened. Instead of putting 73,xxx, someone punched in 63,xxx and obviously this stuff gets reported to vehicle history companies. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I actually did take it to North Olmsted. They didn't do a very comprehensive job and I was charged $220 for it. I might have to take it back and have Sean do it.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $22k (Cleveland, OH)

I merged your post, Otto, with the existing thread on this car.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $20k (Cleveland, OH)

Article that I found on Jalopnik today that talks about this specific car, formally owned by the author.

http://plays-with-cars.kinja.com/here-s-why-you-should-keep-your-old-vin-numbers-1302513166

"Regular readers will know I owned a 500E because I wrote about it in my book, where I fondly described it as “not particularly remarkable.” But I miss it, largely because of its unique history: it was built by Mercedes, then Porsche, then Mercedes, then Porsche, then Mercedes again in a complicated process that could’ve only been devised by Germans. Fortunately, all that complexity had a purpose: after five trips between factories, each 500E came out looking just like a standard E-Class, except with flared fenders.

Anyway: my old 500E startled me because it looks a lot different than it did when I owned it. I bought it after the original owner traded it in on a Fiat 500, which meant it was in pristine condition aside from what can only be described as “elderly smell.” But the new owner changed that by adding new wheels, a new grille, and possibly lowered suspension. And as I sat there, still in bed, looking it over, I couldn’t help but think: Are those clear side markers from an FD RX-7?" - Doug Demuro

He also commented on Bring a Trailer:

"The seller has owned this car since I sold it to him in September 2011. So he’s had it for 2 years. I miss it dearly. I bought it from a dealership, where it had been traded in by the original owner, and I only had it a month or two. So really it’s a two-owner car. When I sold it to the current owner, the rear suspension had problems and needed work (I disclosed), though I don’t remember exactly what those problems were. He must’ve done the work necessary to make it right again.

Obviously I can’t vouch for this car’s current condition, but when I bought it, it was in exceptional shape. It was like a time capsule. When I drove it home from the dealer (who thought it was just a regular W124 and priced it as such), I found all of the original records stashed in a seat pocket. It was crazy.

I made some money off it, and now the seller has it priced even higher. The market on these is going up. Sometimes I wish I hadn’t sold it." - @ Doug

Interesting that Doug has the time to write articles and criticize the car a little but he doesn't have the time to respond to my emails.

Doug for the third time, I need your help with fixing the ODO. All I need is a statement from you stating the miles on the car when you sold to me. As a buyer, who pad your asking price, I deserve at least that. I can arrange all documents needed, mail them to you, a;ll you have to do is sign and send them to me. Please help.

Hello All,

Don't mean to bump this old thread.

Just wanted to update everyone here. Due to lack of response from the previous owner, the mileage issue has not been resolved.

Doug if you are reading this, help me out.

Far be it for me to suggest anything so inconceivable as having you or a friend sign his name on the document... being from Chicago this is more or less normal behavior that is expected - if not required - in many cases.
Don't look at it as forgery, look at it as saving the overworked Postal employee the Herculean effort of delivering a piece of mail AND returning it. You would be conserving energy for many people as well as keeping our national debt down. Who knows how many lives you would save by preventing the postal worker from going postal ? Being called a national hero is not beyond the realm of possibility IMHO.
Again, being from Chicago we look at, and do, things differently up here.
Don't make problems, sign his name and be done with it. Problem solved.

Ron
If you're not indicted, you're not trying !

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $20k (Cleveland, OH)

In Texas, it's only forgery if it involves money...this is mileage. Case closed!

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $20k (Cleveland, OH)

It's over pal....you get the paperwork when you swap the bucks or it ain't happenin'. It's not personal...it's business...

Good luck!

In his defense... the guy writes much better than I.[/url]

Hell, he writes much better than most !
I liked Brock Yates and Henry Manney but Doug's got them beat, or at least tied, no question.

But to give up a job as a manager at Porsche for the "security" of a writer..... that takes a whole lot of balls that's for sure.

Kind Regards,

Ron

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $20k (Cleveland, OH)

I think you are unfair to yourself. I think that Doug's writing abilities are roughly equivalent to his financial acumen, in that he flipped his 500E way too soon and after driving it far too few miles. I suspect you write at least as well as Doug does.

Doug's piece on cars that were built by Porsche for other companies (Audi and MB) is remarkable for the excessive use of the word "cool", which both dates him and indicates that he needs to buy a thesaurus and learn a few synonyms. This piece is at the level of writing competence displayed by Car & Driver authors. That is the reason that I subscribe to SCM and OCTANE, and read C/D in the checkout line, putting it back in the rack when it's time to pay for my groceries.

The car looks fine to me. It is probably priced a bit high, but not outrageously so, and the mileage discrepancy wouldn't bother me; it isn't large. I'd be more interested in the PPI than anything else.

As to professional writers specializing in automotive subjects, after five or six decades of reading everything I have ever been able to get my eyes on, my non-neutral opinion is that Peter Egan is the best of the lot. I liked Mr. Manney quite a bit- I STILL reread his account of the 1966 LeMans race- but Peter Egan would be a fine writer no matter what subject he chose. I'm interested to hear other nominations, or perhaps see a thread opened where we point out our favorite writers in the field, and perhaps I get to read some folks with whom I've yet to become familiar.

I am rethinking selling the car anyway. Will update if anything changes.

Sorry to read about this.

It's bogus that the seller won't take the time to help you, or he has something to hide. Either way, I think you can get the situation resolved. Karma has a way of coming around, do unto others, etc. so no worries in the long run.

Hey man - I have arrived. I'm sorry for the delay but I don't check this place; in fact, I only saw it when I noticed an unusual amount of referral traffic to my website.

I strongly suggest you check your spam folder because I did reply to your e-mail on September 5, 2013. My reply was:

JR,

Hey man! Good to hear from you. Damn DMVs. I love Carfax because I think it's really helpful, but this type of crap is beyond annoying and it's impossible to get fixed. Can you e-mail me the form? I will print it, sign it, scan it, and send it back to you. I don't know any notaries, but maybe you can get it notarized after I send it to you?

By the way - I meant nothing by my comment that you bumped up the price over on BaT. I actually think your price is pretty fair, and it looks like you've put some good work into the car. My comment was intended to be more of a general statement that the values on these seem to be going up. It's a good car and whoever buys it next is going to be really happy with it.

Anyway - shoot me the form and I'll be happy to sign it. I even remember mileage was in the 70s. Sorry the DMV kind of screwed you here!

Doug

You were one of my favorite buyers over the years of me selling cars (a true car enthusiast, and you were very nice to me), and I would never, ever knowingly leave a buyer hanging. When you never replied back, I figured you had sold the car and didn't need my help here anymore.

No hard feelings over your remarks here - I know it must've been frustrating for you to wait for a reply that you thought never came. Please send me whatever document you need signed, or whatever statement you need written, and I will be happy to sign it and return it. This kind of crap that happens with DMVs is unbelievably annoying.

Also: to anyone here possibly considering the car, R1DER isn't lying about the odometer reading! Carfax has it wrong, as usual. I hope I can be of some help in correcting it.

Notaries have to WITNESS the signature and verify identity. Any bank will have a notary.

Hey man - I have arrived. I'm sorry for the delay but I don't check this place; in fact, I only saw it when I noticed an unusual amount of referral traffic to my website.

I strongly suggest you check your spam folder because I did reply to your e-mail on September 5, 2013. My reply was:

Doug, Thanks for the reply and I read that you've replied to my email, in that case I apologize for bad mouthing above. Yes it has been very frustrating, not entirely because of lack of response from you (not the case), but because state of Ohio took me for a ride for weeks and then finally telling me to contact the previous owner.

Anyway I'll be emailing you. In case you do not get my reply. Please check your PM. I will PM you my number, perhaps we can communicate via text.

Really appreciate your response.

No problem - I probably would've been even more upset than you were!! PM received, e-mail sent. Let's get this taken care of! My apologies for your repeated dealings with the DMV... Hopefully this will be the last one!

Appreciate it.

Re: FS: 1993 500E, 040 Black/Black, 73kmi, Atlanta, GA

I'd like to know what the deal with this car is too. Seems like it could be a pretty good deal if you can get over the ODO and if rust is not "tip of the iceberg". Anyone here look at it recently?

Need a good daily - rather keep mine in pristine condition rather than beat her up on the crappy commute.

Yeah, even TheDrivenMan doesn't seem interested in it anymore, either... :scratchchin: And an 040 at that!

Hello Doug, Since I have not heard from you on the 500E I'll assume that is a lost cause. Please do let me know when you are ready to sell it. On another note I am still looking for a 4 door hot rod, so tell me about the E55 if you are selling it. I had one a few years ago and it was awesome. Contact me directly since I won't be spending time on the 500E owner's forum unitl I get another 500E.

Thanks Robert
I'm in TN

I agree. I have always thought this car (currently owned and for sale by R1DER)(who I think bought it from DougPWC who is also VS70) looked like a pretty good candidate, albeit a bit overpriced at $20k. From what I can tell, dlee888 was going to get the carr PPI'd back in July of 2013.

Is your 500 still for sale?
Where exactly are you? I'll be in North Canton next week and may have time to look at it.

thanks

Re: FS: 1993 500E, Black/Black, 81kmi, $20k (Cleveland, OH)

Hello Gentleman,
The car is available. I have gotten many many inquiries on it. Mostly from West Coast, people who are unable to fly out and look at the car, other low ball offers and some just wondering about the car; however, recently I have gotten couple of solid inquiries and one gentleman has even put down a decent deposit. Car will be inspected this week and if all goes well it'll be on it's was to a new home soon.

Also, couple people here and else where have mentioned the car being over priced. I don't agree with that, because cars with twice the mileage are going for mid teens. Then there is work I've done to the car suspension, electronics, tires, brakes etc, all together I have spent nearly $10,000 addressing the issues and updating the front end. You simply cannot discount the money spent on making the car right. By no means am I asking what I have put into the car, even if I sold the car for asking price I still lose few thousand dollars, but that's how things work. At the same time, I believe my car is far better than most 500Es out there so I won't fire sale the car either. I am not selling the car because it's necessary for me to, I decided to sell it because I wanted to try something else.

I understand the car isn't as it came from factory and if you're a purist and looking for something "mint", I ahve another vehicle for sale, it it might be for you.
