Re: Fs: 1994 E420 Gauge Cluster

THIS IS NOT A 500E/E500 PART AND IS NOT APPLICABLE FOR .036 CARS.

Please place 400E/E420 parts in the appropriate .034 "Parts for Sale" sub-forum, NOT IN THE 500E PARTS FOR SALE SUB-FORUM.

I am now moving this to the correct forum.

Just out of curiosity what differs between this E420 cluster and a 124.036 cluster? Is it just the fuel gauge calibration will differ due to the E500E larger fuel tank?

I bought this cluster as a possible fit for my E36 project (electronic w124 speedometer head needed from this cluster) or if I don't use it for that I wonder could the tachometer or ASR Speedo head be good spares for my 500E?

Benz did fit and test the cluster in his car and PM me pictures of it working

The USA-spec .034 speedo is calibrated for 25" tires and a 2.24 axle ratio, instead of 26" tires and 2.82 ratio. Also, the shift-point indicators will be at different speeds.

The fuel gauge calibration is also slightly different, but can be adjusted. The temp, oil pressure, clock, and tach are all identical.

As Dave said, having spares of some of the instruments is helpful, as well as the external housing itself if needed. The speedo is basically a non-starter, and even the fuel gauge adjustment is a pretty specialized operation. I myself keep two .034 and two C126 clusters in my parts stock. The 126 clusters are a direct fit for everything given they came from 560 sedans.
