SOLD SOLD: W124 Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror with On/Off function

I don't build these often and just finished this one. It is built on a NEW core mirror (had the plastic on the glass when I received it). Its your basic auto dimming mirror with a single integrated button to turn the auto dimming on or off. When the auto dimming is on, a green light (to the right of the button) comes on, when the mirror dims, this green light dims as well but it does not turn off. The green light is only off when the auto dimming function is off or the ignition is turned off.

Suitable for all W124/W201 (except the W124 cabriolet) and suitable for both LHD and RHD vehicles.

$185 shipped for US buyers, $215 for outside the US. PayPal preferred.

Installation PDF will be emailed to you. Use the included installation tool and not a hammer, 2x4 or gorilla, to force, push or pound the mirror into its bracket. Watch this install video to see how easy it is (running of additional wire to the center console is only necessary on vehicles with no sunroof or switched 12 volt power in the headliner)

Re: W124 Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror with On/Off function

No HomeLink and/or compass on this mirror, correct? Switchable Auto-dimming only?

Re: W124 Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror with On/Off function

No HomeLink and/or compass on this mirror, correct? Switchable Auto-dimming only?

Yes, correct. This is auto dimming only with a single button to turn the auto dimming function on/off. Of course, I have other W124, W123/R107 and W126 mirrors as well. Auto dimming with Homelink & compass, auto dimming with just Homelink no compass and lastly, auto dimming only, no Homelink, no compass and no on/off button.

Will also be doing a Android smart mirror soon, tons of features but it won't be auto dimming or have Homelink. It will have similar features to what a smart phone does along with integration for a backup camera. Built in Wifi and SIM card slot (for cellular data, so you can use WAZE for example). Cellular frequencies are not compatible with US carriers, waiting on a version that is. In the mean time, I am told by the manufacture that the internal Wifi can connect to your cell phone (if configured as a Hotspot) for internet access. That feature needs to be tested, if I ever get around to prototyping one of these that is.

Rik
Do you have any w124 cabriolet mirrors currently available?

Re: W124 Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror with On/Off function

nice looking mirror (nice and simple and clean also). You told me this already, but I forgot :-o what is the primary difference between this mirror and one on a car that comes with option code 249: AUTOMATICALLY DIPPING INSIDE REAR VIEW MIRROR (I think this gets translated incorrectly as I believe they mean Automatic Dimming Mirror)

Sorry I don't build those anymore. The W124 cab uses a R129 mirror, so you could swap it out for a mid 90s R129 auto dimming mirror with Homelink, just make sure the bracket matches yours. The bracket did change though, not sure if it was 97 or 98

nice looking mirror (nice and simple and clean also).

The first generation auto dimming W124 mirror was not really auto dimming, it had a switch to allow you to select a low dimming or high dimming (see picture). Due to the bracket socket being near the top of the mirror, a new, shorter length bracket (with hollow chamber) was developed, this allowed the mirror to sit in roughly the same location as the OEM non dimming mirror. The second generation OEM W124 auto dimming mirror was actually a auto dimming mirror (no hi/lo switch) and the bracket socket was in the center of the mirror. Unfortunately, a new hollow bracket was never made for this mirror, the first gen, shorter bracket was used, so the mirror actually sat really close to the headliner.

These OEM mirrors suffered from several different problems. The first gen mirror was actually glued together and suffered from the same issues as the OEM non auto dimming mirror. Cracking of the plastic, yellowing of the glass and leaking of the glue. The dimming function did not really work that well, but were talking about the first generation of this technology. The mirror itself was a modified GM mirror made by Gentex and carried a new part number (GNTX-108). If you look at the back of the mirror, you can actually see the plugged wire holes, which were used for the GM vehicles and not for the Mercedes application. Same mirror was modified for use in some BMW 3 series cars of the same era.

The second generation was a much better design, it was actually auto dimming and made from ABS plastic and snapped together and not glued like the previous generation. That mirror was originally made by Gentex and adapted for the Mercedes. Only a few issues with this design, one was the bracket used (as previously mentioned) and the auto dimming glass had a tendency to leak its fluid and stop functioning.

If your looking for a OEM mirror, pay attention to the back side of the bracket, the bracket has a removable plastic cover on it to hide the wires. If the bracket does not have the plastic cover, then its not a real OEM mirror (the bracket is also shorter than a regular bracket).

With that out of the way, the mirror in this listing is a standard auto dimming mirror with a single button allowing you to turn the auto dimming feature on/off. Some people have requested this, but not enough to make it a regular offering via my website. The other option for a basic mirror would be just auto dimming, no buttons. I do build these also and they look similar to the Gen 2 OEM auto dimming mirror but I use Gentex mirrors from the 2002-2010 , so the outer casing is a bit different (see pictures)

Re: W124 Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror with On/Off function

thx for thorough and helpful explanation.

Re: W124 Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror with On/Off function

Rik - why does someone want to turn off the auto dimming function?
(I'm refering to the later type, not the first generation)

And thanks for educational info about these mirrors!

Feature sets for mirrors are dictated by the automotive manufacture. Asian automobile makers seem to always have a on/off function on their auto dimming mirrors. Euro automobile makers don't elect to have a on/off function.

Re: W124 Auto Dimming Rear View Mirror with On/Off function

Hi,
Please tell me dimensions of mirror!
I am from Bulgaria. How can I order?

Thank You!

You can make payment to me via PayPal at rik@2phast.com

The width of the mirror is 10.5" and the height is 2.75". The height including the button, is 3.25 inches.

1/31 is my shipping day, so if you make payment within 13 hours or so, I can ship today, otherwise I will ship next week.

Apologies for the thread jack, but I recall in a past thread that someone on the forum was on the lookout for "core" mirrors to use for re-builds. I ask because I have a rear view mirror that committed seppuku last summer and would be happy to send it on to a new life. If that person would like this core (for the cost of shipping), please let me know.

Pretty sure that was me. How much?

Rik, what core mirrors are you looking for?

Normally I get these in bulk from several yards and they provide me with W124/W201, W126, W123/R107 and W116 brackets. The W124 and W126 are the most popular vehicles for auto dimming mirrors

Always willing to purchase core brackets, assuming the price is right. Good condition rear view mirrors should be sold via EBay though, no need to waste a perfectly good mirror for just a bracket. (you will get more money that way as well)

Rik, does the auto dimming stay on even if you switch off the car and switch on again? Very interested in this, keep getting blinded by the SUVs in Dubai when driving my 500E at night! Cheers.

All auto dimming mirrors are wired to switched 12 volt power, so they come on when the ignition is turned on and turn off when the car is turned off.

This mirror has been sold, but I have a similar one built and ready. It works a bit different, the single button turns the auto dimming on/off and also the compass can be turned on/off or any combination of the two. $200 plus shipping.

It also has a couple of very tiny blemishes in the glass, hard to see unless you look at the glass under bright light.
