There are 2 different part numbers based on VIN, and from Google photos it appears they are not interchangeable. You have the "late" plastic screw, maybe you nee the "early" one? Both are still available new, should be under $5.

Can anyone help with the part no: for item 32 - the spare wheel well cover?

Thanks in advance!

I have a related problem.

Recently purchased A124 898 07 65 (as per gsxr's post and my VIN), but am puzzled as to which way around it's supposed to slot into the bracket on the floor. The screw has various "protrusions" which assumedly helps to retain it in the bracket - but whichever way I try, it detaches itself once I try to screw down the spare wheel "bucket".

Any enlightenment, anyone?

There is a "springy" section with a locking tab at the end - circled in red below. That piece should go into the small hole at the end of the "U" on the metal socket. See image below. I believe the early/late plastic screws are opposite, and therefore early/late sheetmetal may also have the hole on an opposite location? I've never looked into this to confirm. Chassis B61xxxx is roughly mid/late 1991 production, so most 500E's would use the later screw.

That said - I've also had problems with the plastic screw not staying locked in place when inserting/removing the plastic bucket that holds the spare tire down. Not sure if there's a hack to keep it in place, other than using stainless steel safety wire to tie the blasted thing in so it can't slide out.

…Not sure if there's a hack to keep it in place,…

My screw fits rather securely with a slight amount of give. If it was loose, I would carefully peen the U-shaped bracket for a tighter fit or fit a rubber-like material shim between the screw base & wheel well deck.

The later locking screw 124 898 07 65 may have a bracket as shown in the image. I couldn't find any image of a W124 spare wheel trunk, but the A-class W169 appears to use a similar locking screw.
