All,

I have heard increasing reports over the past couple of years about issues with Tapatalk -- particularly in terms of honoring and respecting user privacy, and mis-using customer data. Also unfriendly tactics like using their app to track users and actually download and make copies of subscribing forums on their own servers. They also default to uploading images directly from your phone/mobile device to their servers for posting onto this site, and by doing that they retain rights to those images. Effectively, over the past few years, Tapatalk has been gradually inserting itself more and more in the middle between their app users and the forums they are members of. The goal of all this is to get more and more customer data, and monetize it for themselves - and their own profits.

There have also been numerous, and several significant security breaches of Tapatalk code. In a number of instances, Tapatalk has not bothered to inform their users -- let alone forum owners -- about the breached code and security issues introduced. This has placed forums using their code in jeopardy of hackers, spammers, and false accounts. All of this is very documented. They have even changed code (to patch security issues) and not even changed the version of the new/patched code, meaning that forum owners or users who had downloaded older, insecure versions of their software had no idea that a newer version existed and that they should download it to close the security loop-holes.

NUMEROUS forums around the world have shut down their Tapatalk interfaces and have unsubscribed themselves from Tapatalk's network of forums. Many of them have used their conversions from older, less browser- and mobile-device friendly software like vBulletin, phpBB, Simple Machines Forum, ipBB, and others, to XenForo. XenForo is expressly designed for mobile devices, and displays very well on a wide variety of devices, form factors, and browsers.

After many weeks and months of research, and some middling and less-than-satisfactory experiences over the past year of my own with Tapatalk, I have decided to remove Tapatalk from its interface with this forum. After this point, forum members will need to use regular mobile or desktop or tablet browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc.) with the regular web version of this forum.

At the current time, I am planning to switch Tapatalk OFF on April 15, 2019. That is a full two weeks from now -- plenty enough time to familiarize yourself with using a regular browser to access this site, create a bookmark, play around with it, and so forth.

I wanted you all to have plenty of warning about this. Only a minority of folks (perhaps a few dozen to 50 total) use Tapatalk with any regularity, so this will not impact many of you in any way. For those who DO use Tapatalk, I think you will be very pleasantly surprised about the experience with the forum that you will have with your device.

Your personal privacy and security (and the forum's security) will both benefit from this forum no longer using Tapatalk. This is mainly a move to make your security (at least with this forum) and privacy better.

You of course are welcome to continue to use Tapatalk to access any and all other forums that you subscribe to using that app. Just no longer this forum, after April 15.

You are welcome to comment and discuss in response to this message.

Cheers,
Gerry

Sounds good. I like the white on dark theme of tapatalk, but otherwise have little use for it.

Thanks. I had no idea tapatalk was so bad. You’re right the site looks great in safari on my iPhone.

Few comments on this, so I'm assuming folks are OK with it.

May move to switch Tapatalk off even sooner than mid-month.

I deleted Tapatalk a few years back on my iPhone. It was buggy and not user friendly. I have found the new site looks fantastic on my iPhone XS Max.
Thanks for the feedback, Sir ! I agree, I've used the site on both tablet and phone and it looks and works great. Which accelerates the drive to get rid of Tapatalk.

Some of the stuff about Tapatalk that you can come up with on Google searches is pretty scary. One example, new users registering for a forum using Tapatalk, are granted Administrator status and privileges from the get-go due to a bug in the software and how it interacts with forum software. I think they excised that bug

I was a happy Tapatalk user but know there are privacy problems. I know from some cases in specific situations private messages could be read by an ex-member.
So no problem for me to shut it down. Still using it though because I’ve nothing to hide but it doesn’t feel good anymore.

Also a good reason not to switch fora so many times and reduce my time online....[emoji41]

I'm sure there will be a few Tapatalk die-hards who kick and scream, but they will be happy once they experience the full web site.

Just deleted the app after signing off.

Now why would you do that?!? You won’t be able to access your “Home” forum .... TFTSNBN !!

:update:

I see a Tapatalk logo next to your name !! o_O

For those folks using Tapatalk to access other forums besides this one ... you can CERTAINLY leave Tapatalk installed on your mobile device, and access the other forums you subscribe to as you always have.

Soon, the link in your forum list to this forum will no longer work, and the app will not be able to access this forum. I would recommend just removing this forum from your forum list on the app, and adding a bookmark to your mobile browser: https://www.500eboard.com/forums

I will work with the Tapatalk folks to get this forum removed from their list of forums that they cover. That may take a bit longer to do, depending on how responsive they are.

Cheers,
Gerry

Gerry - I installed the app and was still active on the forums. I reset the passes then unfollowed 500.co and tftsnbn and fruit-birds. Then deleted the app. I just feel the app is more invasive than I want on my phone. I should show on your views as not tatpatalk. Let me know

Tapatalk access to this forum has now been REMOVED.

I have requested with the Tapatalk folks to kindly remove this forum from the list of forums that they cover.

Saw the notice and had checked the forum out on the iPad browser I use, and it looked really good. Tapatalk was still giving me false negatives on new posts and it's been getting harder and harder to avoid their blooming embedded ads, so I was going to swap this and the other forums I use it for over (ie - set up bookmarks and store the passwords). Thanks for ending my procrastination.

How are folks doing with the forum now that Tapatalk has been removed? Is the mobile browser-friendliness working for folks?

I primarily use my android phone browser for the forum Gerry and it is working very well!

Im sure I speak for everyone when I say thankyou again for all your efforts on this new mega update software :)

It seems to be working ok... although I notice that my mobile browser (Safari) only loads partial images when I click on the thumbnail. The behavior seems to be a function of time however. For example, if I click on a thumbnail for the first time, only half the image loads. If i close the image and click again, 3/4 of it will appear. If i close again, and then click again, the full image will be there....?

I was going to put a post in the bug reports, but haven't had a chance yet.

Tapatalk just notified me that this site will be de-listed from their forum list in seven days, so that should be the end of our affiliation with them.

The main reason I liked Tapatalk was the ease of uploading pictures to the forum will there be a way of doing that on mobile. I also enjoyed the ease of pulling up a article while I was working on my car etc.

Thanks.

The experience you get on a mobile device with the new forum software is MUCH richer than you would get with Tapatalk, and identical to what you get with a desktop computer. The new forum software was designed from the ground up to be 100% compatible and usable on all types and form factors of computing devices.

Try it and you will see that it is a MUCH better experience than Tapatalk. Many people have been pleasantly surprised.
