W140 S600L 7.0L AMG

Hey all

I was looking for some advice. I have come across what seems to be a genuine S600L W140 (1996) which has been tuned by AMG at some point and is now a 7.0L - guess that makes it an S70 AMG, in the back streets of Dubai. I am not sure if this is a factory or post factory conversion but I am pretty sure it's the real thing as it has all the stamps in the right places. It also has a full AMG bodykit (front/rear bumpers, side skirts), AMG muffler, AMG 18" split rims, AMG brake calipers, speedometer and steering wheel and ashtray (I think that's it - as if that wasn't enough...). It is also well spec'd being the 600 anyway and has split rear seats, fully optioned out with stitched leather dashboard and consoles and so on.

Now the car has been sitting around for a year or so and the seller tells me it needs a new camshaft which it why it was parked up and forgotten about. Unfortunately some of the engine parts, top plenum, air boxes from the engine now reside in the boot and the back seats so I cannot actually test how mechanically decent this car is nor can I actually tell if all the necessary parts to rebuild this mighty fine M120 engine exist. I don't know the M120 at all, more familiar with the M119 in the 500E so wouldn't be able to tell if obvious parts are missing.

Does anyone have any advice on these engines and the common faults? I have personally never heard of camshafts going on the M120 but I have heard of head gaskets going. The bonnet is shut and can't be opened at the moment (so can't check if the block is AMG) however from seeing S600s in the past there is very little space to do anything in that engine bay and as such I believe any major mechanical work would mean engine out. I am heading back out there to get the bonnet open and have a look.

I suppose being an AMG that many of the major engine components, camshaft, pistons etc. would be AMG specific and therefore practically impossible to track down?

I don't know how much I can score the car for but it would certainly brush up really nice as the paint/interior look good. 98,000km from new the seller says and the car came from Japan a few years ago. The rear suspension also looks to be sagging but that might be due to the heavy engine parts in the boot.

Any advice on purchasing one of these would be great, given it's a 7.0L AMG I think it is a rarity. I would look to either fix it in Dubai or get it back to the UK and fixed properly (due to the lack of real expertise on old engines here in some cases (no disrespect)).

Many thanks all and happy new year!

Cheers

Bill

Bill, do you have a photograph of the car you can post? What colour is it? When you say all the stamps in the right places, specifically which are you referring to?

If the car is indeed a 7 litre, then any missing or broken AMG specific engine part or module is a big deal. All of the dress up parts, suspension, wheels and interior are shared by the lesser AMG 6.0, although if the car has the big 2 piece AMG embossed rotors (not just AMG painted on the calipers) then it is most likely a 7 litre car.

FYI you don't need to open the bonnet to identify the engine, the AMG stamp on an M120 is visible from beneath the side of the block with a torch, a mirror, and a trolley jack, and is normally highlighted with a daub of red paint.

Personally I would save my pennies and wait for one to come up at auction that is complete and running, the past trend has been 4-6 units of C140/W140/R129 per year going through the Japanese auction yards (although the resource is obviously finite!).

One reason I would be dubious about the car if it has been sitting in Dubai for a year, if it was a 'proper' S70 it would more than likely already be sitting in a collection in Abu Dhabi.

Regards

Mike

Hi Mike - how you doing?

Cheers for the response. The car is black with black leather and split rear seats. It's a 1996 facelift with the full AMG kit. It used to belong to a Fly Dubai pilot a few years ago. Do you know the car?

I am certain this is an original S70 AMG because it has the metal plaque at the drivers door jamb which states S600L 7.0 and it really looked like a legit plaque, in line with those I have seen online. Additionally, the car has (what appear to be original) AMG stickers on the sun visors, rear windscreen, ashtray (is not a sticker) and some areas of the trunk. The air boxes are stamped with AMG stickers and the car has a full set of AMG shocks and springs. The brakes are stamped AMG in cast and not painted.

I will upload some photos. However I just saw the car and the workshop managed to open the engine bay. Unfortunately the engine is in bits. The owner of the workshop was there (he has a 1995 E500 as a DD) and he told me the camshaft needs replacing along with the valves etc. as they are bent. I have a list of work he recommended to get the car back together which I will post. While I was looking at the engine the camshafts on the left bank which are in place are stamped AMG as well as the head gasket has a HWA AMG part number. These clues lead me to believe the car is an original S70 AMG and also that getting the original parts would either be impossible if NLA or extremely difficult to find. Am I right in saying if I gave this VIN to Gargash they would only see the S600L parts and not the AMG ones on the system?

I was not particularly looking for an S70 AMG, only stumbled across this one. I am ideally looking out for an E500 Limited, but existing space restraints and busy lifestyle are making it difficult (which is why I sold my 1994 E500 recently to Ed on this forum)...

Would be great to get your thoughts (especially knowing you had one in Dubai). Are you still out here? Would be good to meet.

Cheers

Bill

Sounds like a typical sad story. However for sure it's not only the camshaft if like you wrote that the valves are bend. However you might be able to get the parts from the local dealer (in case you get in touch with the right person otherwise you will get only regular M120 parts) I know someone in gargash and if needed I can establish the contact. I can even give him the spare parts list to order the parts. In anyway I would recommend to let such issues be handled only by qualified hands. Most of the parts are AMG specific. Contact me via private message if required.

...if it was state side I'd grab it...:-P

What ever doesn't exist can always be made..!

Salam Bilal,

long time no hear Bro. M120 can take a hell of a beating, they are still driven as long distance runners in the gulf even in extreme heat. BUT, they are abused and ill maintained to the greatest extent and in nearly all cases its not worth the money and effort.

Unless you find an authentic gem with history of ownership (doesn't seem to be the case here) your effort will probably not be rewarding. BEWARE of the quick sand.

Ws. How are you bro? Good to hear from you. Still got the Brabus?

I agree. But the car seems to check out. I've bought the car anyway as the price was right. The engine will be removed and rebuilt. At the same time we will do some preventative maintenance especially to the difficult to reach pipes etc as they would be difficult to fix once the big V12 is reinstalled.

The flange for the exhaust cam has snapped off which was the issue in the first place. Interior is very nice and all the parts to assemble the car seem to be present.

Hey guys how you all doing? Right, today I paid some money and signed some papers - the car is officially mine!!! Very excited for this project and W140 ownership.

Rouven from this forum kindly recommended one of his friends in Dubai as someone who has very good contacts in AMG Germany who could look into the avaliablity and price for the parts we need to rebuild this car. So I met with him today after a brief phone call and Thomas was an absolute gent and extremely knowledgable about older MBs, a great contact to have generally and someone who is extremely rare to find in Dubai or even in this region. He recommended a few parts which would need changing along with the obvious exhaust cam and he said he would need a few days to look into the query and see whether the parts are still avaliable or NLA. If the original AMG parts are NLA I will need to consider other options - this would involve trying to source used parts (perhaps from Germany or Japan) or getting new parts reproduced by a competent machine shop. Either way this M120 V12 is going to go back together.

I will shortly upload some photos of the car as it stands. I plan to start a vblog of the car on YouTube so those interested can also follow me there.

Awesome! If you'd like, you could just keep updating this thread with photos / background / restoration / etc.

:D

Bill,

+1 👍 on keeping updates here. You always seem to have something going. I know I’m sure interested.

Besides sooner or later you’ll find that “LIMITED”

Take Care

Hey guys cheers for the support, appreciate it. Anyway sorry for the delay in getting photos across. I guess this is the starting point of the S70 AMG and what I am dealing with. Truth be told apart from the engine bay the rest of the car isn't too bad. It obviously needs a very deep clean however I think ultimately it would come up quite smart. The main thing broken in the interior is the centre rear view mirror - as these are electric perhaps someone tried to adjust it by hand and snapped it right off. Anyway you can just about see the AMG springs and brakes etc. I will get some high res photos up soon.

Any/all opinions welcome.

Enjoy

Cheers

Nice! Like these kind of projects!
Interesting to see a comand in place of the audio. Is this period correct?

Last edited:
Yes this is period correct and original equipment for the W140 in Japanese specs. The very first comand was utilized for the JDM market only. It has Integrated HVAC controls and even TV and navigation however no change in language or navigation maps are possible...
