• Hi Guest !

    Welcome to the 500Eboard forum.

What other cars do you have or have you had ?

Cliff Notes version: 1970-80's GM --> 1980-90's VW --> Mercedes, first W201, then W124.

I was never particularly into Asian stuff, although there are a handful now that are pretty impressive. Ditto for some of the current domestic offerings. I always liked other European cars but in general they (Porsche/Italian/etc) were far enough out of my price range that I never paid attention.

EDIT: my bike journey was shorter... FZR600 --> GSX-R750 (94, then 97) --> 2000.5 Aprilia RSV-R. I'd like an MV Agusta or Bimmer RR but my bones aren't as rubbery these days.

:3gears:
You forgot to mention the 123s in your history.

Funny thing on the Fleetwood Dan. My 74 Newport was my first car and like yours it slept 6! And bench seats made things quite easy. It dawns on me that the car had body work and it was plaid in color for a time. We painted it dark metallic green, similar to its original and oddly matching my malachite E500.

That Fleetwood was purchased new as a company car in 1963, then stored in 1966 until 1979, I believe. When I got it the car had around 42,000 miles on it, as I recall. Interior was near perfect, despite the brocade cloth that wears poorly. Everything worked on it, even the "eye" that did the automatic dimmer and the "Wonderbar" radio. About 3-4 months after I bought it the transmission puked. These had the unique "Jetaway 200", which had two internal "mini" torque converters (referred to as "hydraulic couplings") that had welded vanes. The welds were known to break and a vane would come loose and goof up the torque converter. I believe they were only used in a couple years of production.

Anyway, my retired next door neighbor was talking to me about the car about the time this occurred, and when I mentioned it, his eyes lit up as he told me that his son, who owned a transmission shop, knew these boxes quite well and was one of the few people around who could work on them. Two weeks later I got it back from his son's shop, fully rebuilt and running like new.

With this transmission the car could actually go into a 1:1 mode and as a result actually got pretty good mileage. I can recall getting in the high teens on highway drives with it, which considering that it weighed nearly 6,000 pounds wet and had a 390 V-8 with a four barrel carb was pretty good, I thought.

Dan

I'll make some slight updates to this, indicated in blue.

  • 1992 Honda Civic DX (bought new $9,700, sold in 1998 with 125K for $5,500, great car!)

I knew it! You are secretly a Honda Fanboy, repressing those urges all these years!!!!! :stickpoke:
Definitely a Honda Fanboy when it comes to motorcycles !! I had a buddy who had a Honda VFR750F (@gsxr will know this bike) back in the day. That was a scary fast bike too !!

Actually, my ex-wife and I bought a new Honda Accord EX, back in 1996, just before we got married. I probably should have added that to the list. She had it for about two years until we got her the S124 #1 in 1998 (in anticipation of kids).

I am boring- only ever had Mercedes saloons and coupes. First car was given to me - our family w124 200 now E36 project car. That car started the MB disease I have now. I installed a head gasket on it myself when I was 16 and went from there. Done a 2.3k jet swap on it too at 17.:noevil:

Bought about 20x or 25x MBs mostly 124s and some parted out. My permanent keepers are in my signature

2009 Mercedes E63 W211 - my current daily driver w/ P30 package
Al, how do you like the E63 P30 as a daily driver? Do you live somewhere that you can exercise it properly?

My 2008 P30 is collecting dust, but even pre-COVID when I was commuting daily, there was nowhere to get it over 55mph. Feels like getting handed the keys to a Veyron but not allowed to leave the parking garage... more frustrating than fun.

Had to think a lot on this topic, a fun trip down memory lane

28 total, and if I could get one back, it would be the 67 Vette Coupe, 327-350hp 4 speed, Marina blue, white interior, custom wideoval aluminum wheels, wheel wells modified for larger tires - nothing ever looked as good as that car..... no A/C but I was young enough not to care

Currently own 9, with 8 on the road, (in Blue text), and the 9th is a wrecked 99 SL500, a parts car

The wish list is long. For Mercedes it's an 036 and either an R129 or A124. Maybe a dogleg Cosworth in Smoke, too.
And with the Toyotas... eesh: FJ55 (Iron Pig), FJ Cruiser TT, FZJ70, late 100 series, T100, another 80 series... and on and on. lol

Are you a Flipper Detective for Land Cruisers, as well?

Absolutely. Especially with the massive influx of them into that part of the car world. There's always been the known sleaze bags, but they're coming out of the woodwork these days. It's a much bigger market, so nowhere near as thorough, but I try. It does help having a very strong forum supporting the model.

Currently, I'm trying to suss out a small dealer in Houston who has an end-of-production 80 Series that I might want. But the cruiser has some similarities to a well-known and tainted example that sat at Copley for a very long time. An error could be very costly.

I've had many people ask me to assist them with searches and such, but because my personal search net is so wide and vague, I have to politely wave them off due to conflict of interest.

It's interesting to know that the flipper-dealer phenomenon isn't only in the E500E (/Benz) world.

The Viggen was a really unique experience. I used to use it to commute through back country roads,. It had more power than it should have for a front wheel drive car. When passing on a two lane road it was common to see your life flash before your eyes after dropping down a gear and going WOT. The torque steer and turbo lag kept every drive interesting. But it was a lot of fun and much better on gas than my 4runner that got traded for the Saab. I enjoyed that vehicle, and it never let me down. It also looked great to my eye.

Only you could know the humiliation of driving this designers awful nightmare. I had the very same car, (mine was a 63), in powder blue with blue interior. I was completely unaffected and possibly relieved the day I pushed the button labeled D for drive and nothing happened.

Are you sure you remembered to first release the hand-actuated parking brake lever?

I do remember it as one of the trickier cars to hot-wire and drive when my parents weren’t looking because of that transmission.

This week somebody got porked by a scammer/flipper on a newer Land Cruiser.
The community was amply warned. Yet the newbs still took the bait.
Rinse and repeat.

The seller is photoshopping documentation. And selling for cash only. Fake name. Burner cell.

Yours truly and @kwontumspeed tried to warn them.

Looked like it was a different guy that popped with with an "oh crap" moment?

If he had paid for his own CarFax and AutoCheck after getting the VIN off the vehicle in person, perhaps might have avoided the error?

I'm guessing the police don't care enough to take action on the fraud.

Yes. Different buyer than the OP in that thread. But the scammer has nailed MANY people on that forum.

All it would take would be to run a fresh Carfax, but he plays games with the VIN. You won't know if the one he's giving you is real unless/until you see the Title and/or check the body of the truck.

EDIT: Further, I've observed that local authorities aren't very enthusiastic about pursuing these types of crimes. But if there's interstate fraud or Odo rollback then Feds might ride in. States will get interested if the Title or emissions fraud.

Truly believe 'conventional wisdom' stopped existing after Gen X. Poor chap paid cash...
Cops aren't going to do crap, unless as @ace10 pointed out, it crosses state lines or mail fraud is involved.

On a tangent, Atlanta PD announced that unless there's an injury in an accident in the city limits, cops are not coming out. And if you know Atlanta driving, I am on total driving shutdown because that sounds like a lot of heartburn in court in a 'i said, they said' conflict. Waiting on my Amazon get-here-stat Prime dashcam.

V. late here, but thanks for the link @gsxr !

Not sure how one starts this list, but if I begin with cars I regularly drove since getting a license integrated with ones I actually owned:

1988 Dodge Grand Caravan LE (Metallic Blue, Vinyl Tape 'Wood' Paneling, 3.0 Mitsubishi sourced V6! Yeeeeahhh!)
1991 Volkswagen Passat GL (I still lust after the steering feel this guy had...)
1988 Acura Integra LS (Black/Black) <--- First Car I purchased with my own money, got me all the way through college
2000 Volkswagen Passat GLX 4Motion - Really appreciated the look and initial build quality of this guy. Started coming apart 15 or so years later however
2000 Volkswagen Beetle 1.8T - Reflex Yellow - Cute, but I never really 'got' that car. Lovely 'crayon' interior.
2004 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 1.8T - First and only 'new' car. Totaled in downtown Seattle by a ~2000s Audi A4 creeping out at an intersection between the stopped traffic in the right hand lane
2004 VW R32 - the 'woookkiiieeeeee' Tornado Red!
1999 Volkswagen Golf 'Wolfsburg' Edition - 2.Slow, Autotragic, Nickname: Silver Bullet
1994 Mercedes-Benz E420 - :D Uter
1995 BMW 540i 6-speed <--- Current money PIT

Jon, I also started my Euro-car journey with VW... but I didn't stay there nearly as long as you did! They definitely have steering feel nailed, and of course fahrvergnügen. But the MB engineering & build quality (at least on the 124 chassis) is awfully hard to surpass.

I’ve had a few. Sadly nothing too special. This does include my wife’s cars too. There was a time about 10 years ago when I was buying and selling something every 6 months 😂

NIIIIIIIICCCCEEEEEE...... and no front license plate either. So green with envy! 😎
That was right after she came home. Paper tag on the rear only. I had it registered for one year in Mass, then I moved it to VA tags and had to put the front plate on.

@ace10, When I was a teenager, as I had mentioned before, my buddy and I were extremely envious of an acquaintance of ours who received an identical looking Civic Si for his 16th Birthday. His demeanor in approaching people was kind of like Ryan Lochte's demeanor (of Olympic "Jeah" infamy):

Anyways, because of this and his propensity to use colorful language with customers (we were employees at a sporting goods store), we called him "Mr. Shitload." Would this fine nickname agree with you as well? :stickpoke: 😎😁
