What parts are unique on a 400e

I have an opportunity to purchase a 400e for a 1000 dollars in running condition. I am curious to what parts are shared with the 500e.

Thanks

Well, really quite a bit. Obviously most of the control units are different, and the seats are different. Obviously, the drivetrain is different (engine+transmission) in some important ways, but identical in others. IIRC, the .034 didn't have rear SLS. ASR was optional -- some cars had it; others didn't (all 036s had it). Fenders are going to be different, but hood, trunk, all glass, doors, and door cladding is going to be the same. Bumpers are different.

Much if not most of the interior except the seats & parts in the instrument cluster is a direct carryover for that year's equivalent 036. Axles and suspension are going to be regular 300E/E320 stuff.

There's enough in common to make a 1,000 car worth buying (and parting, if wrecked) or dismantling as spares for interior and exterior parts. There are enough 034 owners out there that you could sell parts to them.

Cheers,
Gerry

I thought the 500e front/rear door cladding was unique to the 500e? (because of the fenders/bumpers)

No, door cadding is same by all 124.

Sorry, I should of said front/rear fender cladding. I know the door cladding is interchangeable.

The cladding on the front fender and rear quarter are unique to the .036

Yes, non-door lower cladding is going to be different (before and aft of the doors on both sides). I specified "doors and door cladding" as the same but fenders (and by assumption, fender-attached chadding) as different.

As he owns two examples of each, GSXR should be able to chime in with supreme details on additional differences.

BTW I visited a 1994 E420 at one of the wrecking yards here in Houston on Saturday. If anyone is in town, it's nearly complete underhood; the CAN box is unopened (though the EZL is gone), and it's fairly complete otherwise save for the seats front and rear.

Cheers,
Gerry
