We invite you to browse and take advantage of the information and resources here on the site. If you find helpful information, please register for full membership, and you'll find even more resources available. Feel free to ask questions, and make liberal use of the "Search" function to find answers.

Well well well...

I've contemplated on this (off and on) for quite awhile, but I am currently (actively) looking for a good condition W140 from the 'twilight' years of that model. Only interested in the S500 or S600 varieties. Also interested in getting one as fully loaded as possible.

One with some mechanical needs isn't completely out of the question, but anything with rust is. I do NOT want to have to deal with metal cancer. I know this likely restricts my search to the west coast, but that is A-OK! High miles isn't a dealbreaker either as long as its been kept in good nick, and most if not all interior goodies work. Based on my experience a good condition interior/slightly neglected mechanicals is much easier to work with than one thats been mechanically kept up, but completely ratted out on the inside.

Anyway... i've been perusing for awhile, and decided I'd have better luck here than with any of the w140 specific forums on the 'other' sites. If you have one you've been thinking of parting ways with that meets the above criteria (or know someone who does), send me a note so we can chat.

Thanks!

I would say you want a late S500 with the coil packs and 722.6 transmission. W140s are fantastic cars and don't rule out the 2 door coupes either if you find a late model variant in good condition.

Just press every button in the car and make sure every electrical accessory works and there are lots of them! Usually very dependable cars though IF they have been maintained. Best of luck in your search 👍

Jon, there was a couple V140's on C&B recently, I think? I'd keep an eye on the 3 main auction sites - BaHaT, C&B, MBM along with checking classifieds & forums. Be prepared to look nationwide for the right car, although living in the PNW there's a decent chance you could find one in your area, or at least the west coast.

The 5.0L will be familiar since you own an E420 although engine management is all different. The V12 would be really nice but I don't know what kind of premium they command. Make SURE the car has at least 2 working keys. Last I heard, the keys are still unavailable from MB, which has been a nightmare for some owners. The 1996-up models have DAS with a chip in the key fob. Lose the key(s) and you have a 2-ton yard ornament.

:duck:

Prices seem all over the map and I could never figure out why… W140 S-Class. That was a ‘97-99 specific search on BaT. Three Grand Editions (at least) in the last 18 months or so, but I can’t figure out why they vary so widely. I’m sure you can though, having studied the car.
But I’ll keep my eyes open @a777fan.

maw

PS... what I have observed buying Benzes over the past 15 years or so is MB people classically don’t like mileage. This group is exceptional in that regard. So use that to your advantage and don’t shy away from a 75k+ mile example. As you said, interiors are the main worry at this point. The oily bits can be dealt with.

I have a 99 CL500 (w140 coupe)

Approaching 2 years of ownership and it has been absolutely wonderful. My car has just over 73k miles. Very well sorted, certainly an important trait to look for in your search. Not presently wanting to part with it, but can always be swayed. W220 18" monoblock type rims go on it this week as well. Located in Indianapolis

Beautiful!

Currently locked in on the sedan types, but will keep you in mind if that changes. :)
