Drivers seat arm rest w/flip top

Bing, where did you find them? I need one in gray.
Gray would be 124-970-15-31-7C12 but the price is $1390 MSRP in USA. However, I'm not sure if it's available. You would need to contact a dealer and have them check stock in Germany.

Is there any way to separate the top portion of the plastic insert from the leather cover? Just purchased a new gas shock from Ivan, but unfortunately my hinge is broken. I have a donor box with a good hinge/straps but in a different color, I'd like to switch out the entire plastic insert top and bottom.

The bottom came free relatively easily, but I'm having trouble with the top. Removed all fasteners that I can find and I tried to pry it free with a silicon trim tool, the rear portion separated enough to remove the gas shock but the rest of it doesn't want to come apart. Feels like there is another fastener somewhere, around the clasp or something. Am I missing something?

I ran into the same problem. The top section is attached very securely, possibly with adhesive? I think I tore apart a junkyard one years ago to figure out what was holding it together but now I can't remember what I found!

Hello everyone,

I also have had some troubles getting the proper gas-spring for my amrest, but finally I found the company, which will do it for me.
I ordered 10 pcs. and I should have them within next 3-4 weeks. Would anyone be interested in getting one of them?
The price for it should not exceed 50$ + shipping from Poland.
I will take the picture of it as soon as I get it, and I will show it to you.

Take care by now

Mariusz

Mariusz,

If you see my post #89 above I was able to locate the Stabilus distributor (at least here in the states) and order the exactly factory replacement gas shock. At $106 US it wasn't cheap but at least there was there was no minimum order quantity

Bing, this is a long shot, but by any chance do you still have this arm rest? Would it fit in a 93 400E? If so, how much would it be in US dollars? Thx!

I wanted to resurrect this thread, as I recently have done some digging on the availability of these struts. This was before I found this thread, and all the good detective work done by everyone previously. I do currently have a lead on the original struts, which I am still fleshing out (not sure it is actually going to lead anywhere...) but in the process of discussing the supplier provided me with this neat schematic of the little strut. I thought it was cool and wanted to share.

I'll keep this thread updated with what I end up finding out about the supplier that sent me a quote!

A couple months back I PM'd member ivanned and he still had some of the little gas struts left. I bought 2x and he shipped fast - a nice guy to deal with. Id try him first

Ivanned is great and his product is top notch. It does require some slight modification to properly fit the E500E, but if you have a bench grinder it's just a couple of minutes' worth of work.

I documented the process in this HOW-TO, some time back: https://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7515

I know that some time back, Ivanned was running low on struts, but as JC says he did have some left, not too many though.

Cheers,
Gerry

Thanks guys, that is definitely good to know. I figured he was all out at this point. I’ll probably reach out to him when I hear back on the astronomical price of re-starting the Stabilius production line to make one additional strut.

Okie dokie... This information is not meant to disparage the great 'Ivanned' or his products in any way! I promised to report back once I heard from the Stabilus retailer. I have, and can now relay the following information:

The new Stabilus P/N for this item is669233

The cost of producing one strut is indeed astronomical... $214.75!! But... the cost is (unsurprisingly) a function of order number. When you get to an order size of 10, the price drops to $50.95 a piece. I would assume an even larger order would further drop the price per unit, but I have not inquired as to any larger lots.

I know this has been attempted in the past without much success and that the availability of 'Ivanned' struts further cuts into overall demand, but I would be willing to coordinate a group buy if anyone is as psychotic as I am and would like a replacement Stabilus strut for their armrest. We'd obviously need to get to 10 orders to make it even remotely worthwhile. Not sure if there are 9 other nutters on this forum, but you never know!

According to the retailer, lead time would be approximately 4 weeks. I will upload and attach the new schematic for PN 669223 that the retailer provided, which confirms that the new P/N conforms to the correct required dimensions.

Please PM me if interested in a group buy!

Trip,

Can you organize a "Group Buy" for these? You should be able to get enough for 10 pretty easily. I can guarantee that probably 90+% of people have a bad strut in their arm-rest. You just need to collect PayPal payments ahead of time and then you're good. Start a new thread, if so inclined.

Even better, would be to put together a "kit" whereby it could come with a new strut and two new MB plastic retainers (124 973 02 26, approx $2.50 each, two required) as a complete refirb for the arm-rests. I believe we have a HOW-TO to repair everything at this location. You could sell the full kits for $75-80 postpaid, to make a few bucks to recoup your time and effort.

The nice thing with the Stabilus units is that they wouldn't require any grinding or modification as the "ivanned" units did. At the time, ivanned's units were the only possible solution, and were very very welcome!!

Stuff to ponder.

You can sign me up as Nutter/Punter #1 for a Stabilus unit for $50 + your postage, BTW.

Cheers,
Gerry

Maybe a kit could be offered on the W124performance eBay store. Hmmm...

:scratchchin:

The first one Ivanned sent to me back then was defective from the getgo; the quickly-supplied replacement lasted ~2 months before it too failed.
Regarding the proper dampened functioning of the lid, frankly, since then I no longer give a damn.

Yikes! That is news to me. Anyone else experience short lifespans on the replacement shocks?

:runexe:

Not like I was born under a bad sign, but things average out over the long haul...
e.g. 180K miles on my 635 original clutch.

I'll take the spot behind Gerry. I also need to confirm if I can use the same one in my W202 which has the same issue but with a different armrest design. That would put me in for 2.

Excellent chatter so far gents! I will start a separate thread to increase visibility. Stay tuned...

These shocks are an often-overlooked -- but significant -- component of the $5-10K GVZ-mandated "deferred maintenance" that ALL E500Es carry....

Man, I just had a PITA of a time replacing my shock. I could not for the life of me get the top of the arm rest off the base, as described in #104 above. Could not find the clips reference, no way no how. So I wired the strut in a compressed position, put it in where it should go, then, with many, many tries, curses, and oaths directed towards Germany, succeeded in getting the pivot/anchor pin for the shock put into the shock base through the narrow opening I was able to make by prying the top away from the base. This will make sense if you have done this job. If anyone can put a high res pic of the "clips" mentioned in 104, and where/how to press them, I'd like to see it. What I thought would be a 10 minute job wound up at about 3 hours. I didn't want to break anything by forcing, so I took great care.... Nice to have a springy top now!

The top base is often glued on also..in addition to the four clips on the sides. It has a dab of glue in the middle section..which can make it hard to separate the two pieces.

See post #931 on my owners thread "Lowmans 500e"

Is it way too late to get in on getting an armrest strut? I've read through the thread, but I'm not sure if the latest developments still yield ways to buy a replacement or 2.

The limiting straps for Armrest/Telephone Console Cover are 124 973 02 26. A quantity of 2 are required. I recently replaced my broken straps with new.

The small shock for Armrest/Telephone Console Cover is a Stabilus Lift-o-Mat 977934 0080N Gas Spring.

This item does not appear to be listed separately in North American (NA) EPC. This armrest configuration may have only been offered in the NA market. I have been seeking a replacement gas spring & have been informed one must buy a used armrest assembly in order to get the gas spring (and hope that it works properly). I kept hope alive that there must be a way to obtain just the replacement gas spring itself (if it still existed), but it appears Stabilus no longer makes a readily-available Lift-o-Mat gas spring of this size anymore  . And after several Sales & Service telephone conversations, I’ve exhausted my attempts in finding an existing cross reference or suitable substitute within Stabilus NA or any of its North American competitors. The Sales Rep noted this gas spring may have been produced in limited quantities only for MBNA applications.

The smallest readily-available gas spring (see attached file) is still several millimeters larger in all dimensions than the 977934 0080N (for example: 6mm vs 4mm rod dia; 15mm vs 12mm piston dia), thereby an incompatible fit within the confines of the armrest design.

CarpartsWholesale sells a Stabilus Console Lift Strut SG403043 for $33.77. Although claimed to fit the 500E, it is too large. Also, there is a Company in Britain & NJ USA, http://www.plccenter.com/sm/Stabilus.html , that rebuilds gas springs, but I have not inquired yet. Has anyone had any success in sourcing a new replacement of this individual part? I'm sure my 500E gas spring isn't the only one that could use a dose of industrial Viagra to “get it UP!” :wormhole:

Stabilus GmbH is headquartered in Koblenz Germany. Possibly one of our European 500Espot members could verify if this part is available through the European market? Please let us know :detective: .

Happy Hunting!
Gentlemen:

6 of you lucky souls will be able to purchase a Direct Dimensional Replacement Gas Spring for the original Stabilus item that has lost its oomph like the one on my 1993 400E did.

Through a 2015 Post on the Forum I contacted Mike Daraska at Orr & Orr in Bedford Park, Illinois, who are a Gas Spring supplier for many brands. I gave Mike the updated Stabilus Part Number 285611 that was listed on the 2015 post, and this has since been replaced by the Stabilus/Hahn Part Number 669233 which they have IN STOCK (well they have 6 available since I bought the 7th one). Hahn is apparently a subsidiary of Stabilus and this is sold under their banner now.

The asking price is expensive - $214.75 - but Mike extended to me a US Navy Veteran's Price of $193.30. You can contact Mike at:
Email: mike@orrorr.com. Phone: (708) 496-9800.

Drawings of the previous Stabilus Gas Spring and the new Stabilus/Hahn Gas Spring are attached for your reference.

The Plastic Check Straps that always break are still available through Mercedes-Benz, this is Part Number 124 973 02 26, and the Friends and Family price is $2.20 each.

Hope this helps those who want to restore their armrest to New Condition!

Cheers,

George Jr.

Thanks for the update on this, and the availability of this gas strut.

We have had two members in recent years do Group Buys of similar struts, each costing in the neighborhood of $20-25 each. I am not sure that folks would want to pay ~$200 for a strut, but perhaps there are some here who would be interested.

Again, thanks for the heads up.

Does this part only fit armrests with storage console? Wondering if I would need a replacement for my car?

Gentlemen:

Here's what a new Stabilus Gas Spring looks like out of the box. The only measurable difference between the original and this new one is that the hole diameters in the end fittings are maybe .015" smaller than the original which provides a much more slop-free fit.

I gave up trying to remove the leather top of the lid to get to the attachment points for the gas spring and the Plastic Check Straps, it must be glued down as it showed no desire to pop off. It took less than 5 minutes to secure the end fitting inside the cover by carefully using a pair of (German-Made) plastic wedges to carefully open the gap just enough so that I could pop the end fitting with the pin installed into its attachment bracket and button everything up. The check straps take just a bit of finesse to secure the end fitting up under the plastic caps.

The only negative was the high price for just one of these, but the fit is perfect and it's "Made in Germany".

Cheers,

George Jr.

I was said to use a hairdryier to little soft the plastic!

Hi,I am new here, writing from Poland. I was able to get my old strut out but not disassemling the lid from leather part... I made my own research and found a very similar strut from Stabilus also. But that particular one is slightly different:
8739UO instead of 285611.
8739UO is 3mm shorter, pitch is 8,5mm shorter, power 10N bigger. Should fit. I have ordered one here in Poland for appr. 30-35US$. 4 weeks order time. I will see...

Have you seen the HOW-TO that we have for this operation?

Hi,
yes.. but later after I already tried to disassemble the part. Probably mine is glued.

I own W124 cabrio fresh imported from USA (september 2020). Plastic parts are old, I was to buy lot of [cabrio] replacement parts printed on 3D printers, because lack of genuine parts. I dont want to risk force opening of lid just to replace anything! Better 3 hours of work then broken plastic!!!

Good and bad news according to ordered stabilus 8739UO gas spring. As you can see on pictures the replacement does not fit exactly as I would like to, and was told by polish Stabilus dealer!!!! But it was worth to order that one just to be sure.
There is light in the tunnel! I got quotation for ordering Sabilus 285611 (not from polish dealer!). I have checked the technical drawing (attached) with the genuin 977934 and it seems that 285611 should fit better. When I order 10 pieces the price will be netto 50 Euros plus 21% VAT a piece. I need just 2 for myself but then the price rises up to 65Euros each. Order time 8 weeks. If You need one or two - please contact me.

Have you read the thread linked below yet? 285611 is no longer available. It supercedes to slightly-different 699233, which may be available, but requires modification as described below.

Yes I have read the thread. But I have the proper offer for 285611 dated 28.01.2021! From 2 different dealers - one from Germany - 120Euros, and one from Belgium 65Euros. Probably Stabilus can make them, maybe extra after order and prepayment, it is the matter to programe machine in the factory!
I will try anyway! So we will see. You can decide in 8 weeks after my next post.

Bad news... The Stabilus dealer from Belgium wrote that he cannot deliver. After almost 3 month of waiting. I don't give up! There must be a way to get similar one!
