* Let's have a test and tune day in So. Cal.

Whoa...what's with all the piss and vinegar?

I'm sick yet again, I'm still hugely pissed at the way Jeff has done me (and every time the subject of tubes gets brought up, I get pissed all over again), I have an impressive water line leak in the backyard that has turned it into a mud bog (and the valve that turns off the water to that line just spins), I'm frustrated as hell because I still haven't made any progress towards escaping this G.D. IE (which is my main goal in life at this point), and last but certainly not least, my mother has stage three, "C" uterine cancer (that's almost stage four). Needless to say, it doesn't take much to set me off right now.

Justin, yes, $400 for those rims is too high but the idea that I proposed in my earlier post (the one that I already suggested you read) could have knocked that price down to $200 for the four. If Jeff has a decent bone in his body, he would have agreed to it.

Thanks for the Irwindale invite but I just have too much going on right now so I have to pass.
Regards, Eric

Give us a Rock and Roll Race Report!

I've finally figured out what has been missing from the Rock and Roll Race Reports....... the Rock and Roll!
So I'll cue up one of the all time great drag racing songs and you guys hit the "play" button when you start to read Justin's report! (Once it's posted.)

(Yes, that's a genuine old school Mopar starter featured in that song!)

Thanks Steve. This is actually something that we've been dealing with since last summer, I just never told anyone. She's already had the surgery and she just finished the chemotherapy. Now we're just waiting on test results which is driving us nuts because every medical professional we spoke to when this all started was fairly pessimistic about her chances for beating this.

What's going on for our next drag day? Only about a week to go! Spacey Casey's already on board. Who else?
Regards, Eric

Ummm .... if this thread goes much further down the path I **think** it's going, I'm going to have to cap it off......

Allright, allright .... OK you guys win!

I've had a grand total of 28 Forum members order, beg and generally cajole me into re-opening this thread, so I guess I'd better open it before World War III erupts. I guess the final "persuader" was when I heard that nuclear-tipped missiles were being targeted toward Houston from Southern California over the past week or so because this thread was closed.

Judging by the post and read counts, this thread is by far the most important, influential and informative thread on the entire site !

So ... please continue, with my compliments !! SORRY FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE

Thanks for the support guys! :thankyou1: :yourock: :wootrock: :grouphug: :hug2:

Our most recent day was kind of a wash (but not too bad either though). No Benzes showed up nor did Spacey Casey; the track had too many other patrons there this time who weren't/aren't even part of the street legals group (like the kiddie dragsters and such) which led to the place being too crowded, which limited runs; the temps weren't as cool; the head/cross wind was back, leading to a sandy, slippery track; and the D/A was nothing to write home about. I still got 4 runs in (could have gotten 5 if I had tried), 3 of which were sub-14.5s, and I managed to twice spank an N2O assisted Maxima (videos coming). I only lost one race (to a low-14 second ricer Civic) when I lost traction a bit and ran a 15 flat.

Nothing to report about any of the other board members though because, again, none of them showed. I know they were with us in spirit though. I'll leave it to them to say why they didn't make it as I don't want to post info that they may feel is their own business.

I will create a build thread on B3 in the not too distant future. I just have too much going on right now!

As promised, here's one of the videos of one of my runs against the N2O assisted Maxima:

Unfortunately the Maxima pilot has posted the wrong video. It turned out that he forgot to re-open his bottle's valve prior to the second of our two runs and this is the video of that run. We are still waiting for him to post the video of the first run. If and when he posts the right video, I'll post it here.

Steve, Justin, you guys never did post a Rock and Roll Race Report for your Irwindale trip. What happened?

I'm also having computer trouble again so don't be alarmed if I'm missing for a while. As Arnie would say: "I'll be back!"

I didn't go to the Irwindale track, too much work this past month and the way it looks, I might not make the next Fontana track day as well.

I'm also having computer trouble again so don't be alarmed if I'm missing for a while. As Arnie would say: "I'll be back!"
Now what?

I bet he's desperately trying to find those wipers he was supposed to send me last year... LOL...

:banana2:

Yeah, that too. I'm sincerly sorry about that. The thing that I didn't reveal is that I still have to pull the other side. You see, I had actually only pulled the one side so I could determine if I'd be able to tolerate the look or not, determined that I in fact can tolerate the look, got on here and offered them to you with the plan being to pull the other side shortly thereafter. I've just got to get out there and do it! (I will soon, I promise!) I've just been busier than you all can imagine. I haven't even had time to call Steve or Casey to get them to help me a little with my computer woes since my wife's nephew seems to have abandoned us. But I finally did call Steve and Casey tonight and they both helped me so I'm back for now. (Thanks guys!)

I'm still going to go this Sat because the weather is going to get hot on us before you know it, plus I don't know how much longer I'll be living close to this track, or any track for that matter. (I'm really determined to get my family out of So. Cal.!)

Somebody needs to go racing with me this weekend! We have no Stevo, and we have no Casey this time. Justin, what about you? And how about you Jano? Are you ready to come spank me?
Regards, Eric

I'm out. Too much going on and I still haven't sorted out my busted Fuel Pressure Safety Switch. Have fun Eric!

Stop the presses!

This is really unbelievable:
A Superior Court has suspended operation of the Auto Club Dragway. The suspension results from a successful challenge of a San Bernardino County sound standard by a group of concerned residents. San Bernardino County officials had approved an amendment to the County Sound Standard in 2010 to accommodate louder sound arising from races at the Dragway. The Superior Court found that the underlying Environmental Impact Report which the County relied on to approve the sound standard amendment was not sufficient.

We are currently reviewing the court ruling and evaluating our options moving forward. We hope to have more detailed information about our future operations at the Dragway soon.

The NHRA Street Legal Drags on Saturday, March 3rd will be canceled.

Nothing much to add except to say that we'll have to continue to monitor the situation.

WOW! Oh well, I couldn't make it anyway, too much work.

"successful challenge of a San Bernardino County sound standard by a group of concerned residents" - it's a freaking race track, don't like it...move your sorry dumb ass away.

Just for the record, it's not "tree huggers" who do this kind of shit. (I consider myself a tree hugger!) It's the dumb-asses who paid too much for their homes and now can't accept the fact that the market has corrected itself and they need to adjust their expectations accordingly. I'm no genius, but even I saw the correction coming. (Frankly, I'm surprised that it didn't begin a year earlier than it did.) Anyways, these goofballs want to blame anything and everything for the fact that their home isn't getting any takers at their inflated price so they go after the things that they think are preventing their nappy, overpriced home from selling. Things like "that noisy racetrack" or the guy who lives across the street who they think has too many cars for example. They whine to code enforcement and they team up with other like minded homeowners, screwed speculators, and real estate agents and agencies to bring these lawsuits. That's about the time that the old bats who have nothing better to do than to mind everybody else's business get involved and then the whole thing takes on a life of it's own.

Well, since I went and revealed what is going on with my Mother here in this thread a while back, I am duty bound to give you all an update. She seems to be OK! In her latest round of tests, the medical professionals were hesitant to use the word "remission", but they haven't found any sign in any of their tests that anything is going on, cancer wise, either. She remains "on watch" though, and probably will be for the rest of her life because cancer in general, and particularly this form of cancer, has a reputation for reappearing.

She is not exactly out running marathons though. The Chemotherapy apparently caused some nerve damage, which compromised her ability to use her legs properly and this nerve damage also left her prone to dizziness as well. These two maladies left her kind of unstable on her feet. (This sounds weird to me too but we've been told that these kinds of side effects are not unusual. They don't know if or when this nerve damage will reverse itself.) So this lead to them wanting to put her in a wheelchair but she feared that that would lead to her being too sedentary, which wouldn't do her recovery any good, so she settled on a walker instead. This worked OK for a while but then she suffered a bad fall and broke her pelvis. While this is pretty bad, it's not as bad as breaking a hip because a broken hip requires surgery while a broken pelvis basically heals itself. (It takes a lot of time and some therapy though.) So the doctors wound up getting their wish after all, as now she is in the wheelchair, but, the glass is still way more than half full because a year ago she was given only 6 months to live. (She was originally diagnosed a year ago last month but she didn't tell me until 3 months later in June 2011.) So all in all, we are very grateful, all things considered.

Glad to hear she's doing better (broken pelvis nonwithstanding... she really shouldn't have been out snowboarding in the first place though, eh?)

:D

Thanks Dave.

Her attitude about it all has been surprisingly positive. When she was still in the walker, she was even cracking jokes about how she was dragging her leg behind her like "Igor" which is doubly funny because my nickname for her since I was a kid is "The Momster".

After the races I attended a memorial for one of the tech inspectors who had died recently. I had always liked the guy because it was always clear that he was there to protect people from hurting themselves (and/or others), not just be an A-hole. Anybody here know who Big Willie is? He was there to pay respects too as it turned out the deceased man was an old friend of his! Anybody here who remembers who Big Willie was/is and how significant he was/is to racing can appreciate what a thrill it was to met him! If you don't know who he is, don't worry cause you'll soon be able to go watch the movie about him that is being developed!
Regards, Eric

We've lost Big Willie now too. http://articles.latimes.com/2012/may/25/local/la-me-willie-robinson-20120525

Mom is now out of the wheelchair and back in the walker!

What ever happened to the Texas Mile (southeast of San Antonio)? I don't recall seeing any videos.

I ended up not being able to attend the Texas Mile, due to business travel commitments. It was last weekend. I am planning to go in March when they have the next one.

Hello everyone!

Sorry I've been away for so long but I am busy beyond words. And to top it all off I am being blessed with another son in a few months! (With me at 52 years of age!) The relocation to No. Calif. isn't going to happen. We are instead going to relocate back down to North San Diego Co. sometime before Summer '14. Now that San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station is permanently dead, we have had a major shift in our priorities. Now we are going to be in Uncle Glenn's neck of the woods!

I just got a message today from the director of communications for the track that they are breaking ground for the construction of the sound wall and that they will have a drag racing schedule in 2014! When that schedule is released, I'll being posting it here so watch for it!

Dave, I haven't forgotten you. (I need to get my E420 back home from storage. They won't let me work on the car there. I've tried.)

Uncle Gerry, I haven't forgotten you either. I WILL create that Benzer3 build thread, hopefully soon. I just really wish I could access my old thread on Scott's old site for some of the info there. It's gonna be hard to remember everything without seeing my old "notes" there. I already know what I'm going to call the thread: "500E/E500 acceleration from your 400E/E420 on the cheap".

The Sauceman was supposed to be letting you all know that I still love you all and that I would be back. I hope he remembered to convey that message. It was supposed to be here in this thread. Maybe he posted it somewhere else.

Benzer3 is down in a big way. He went down the end of July 2012. Blew his front trans seal real bad. It wasn't even leaking in the slightest before that. We made it home and he got parked. He's been parked ever since. Quite frankly, this is NOT something that should have happened at only 143,500 miles. A $60,000 car and he couldn't even make it to 150,000 miles! Benzer1 has 90,000 more miles than that and he is still going strong. To be quite frank and honest, I was pissed. That's when I disappeared from here. I figured that you all didn't want to hear me bitching endlessly about it which is exactly what I was doing for over a year. (You can ask the Sauceman!) I can still remember how you guys hated it when I bitched about the plastic oil tubes and our unreinforced plastic chain rails. Well, that is NOTHING compared to the bitching I've been doing over this! Here we are, over a year later, I'm STILL pissed! I finally got that car where I wanted it to be and then this. TBH, I'm still not over it, but I needed to come back here and update you all on the status of the track. So please forgive me cause there is still some bitching left in me about this!

R and R-ing trannies in these M119/W124 cars is a total R.P.I.T.A. I'm not even going to attempt it. Pulling the engine and trans together is the easier way to do it. ("Easier" being a relative term here.) And if I'm going to have to pull the engine out I might as well swap in a 5.0 M119 while I'm at it. And then go ahead and either rebuild or replace the trans as well. It would be stupid to just replace that seal and not rebuild or replace the trans while it is out. So now I have a major project on my hands and there is no way I can undertake it at this point in my life. So Benzer3 just sits. Anybody here want the documented quickest naturally aspirated stock geared 400E/E420 in the universe for themselves? A aluminum oil tubed, 92 ECUed, 11 to 1 compression closed deck 4.2 powered 400E with a custom full 3 inch exhaust that can (and did) run neck and neck with a modded 500E? A car that gets BETTER fuel economy now than it did unmodded? A car that is the quickest 4 door that I have ever owned? Sound interesting to you? Let's talk. This car would be a great car for a younger person who wouldn't mind the work and has the time for it. I don't.

I have no idea what I'll be running at the next drag day, but I do intend to go even if I have to run a non-Benz. I'm hoping to have Benzer4 going by then. Got to get him home and running first! I will also be bringing my kids with me from now on, 1) because they are old enough now, 2) because I've already been wanting to for a long time, and 3) to give Mommy and new baby a break. So from now on anybody who goes to drag day will get to have the thrill of meeting Uncle Gerry's namesake and the Sauceman's niece and nephew! (Go ahead Sauceman, tell everyone what a thrill and a treat they are in for!)

Speaking of B4, I noticed that his harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley assembly looks like it is much lighter weight than the one on B3. We all know how reducing reciprocating weight (like wheels) gives us a much greater reduction in quarter mile E/Ts than reducing simple dead weight does, and reducing reciprocating weight on the engine benefits us even more! Seeing that lighter assembly has me thinking that the crank might be lighter as well! Even though B4 has about 25,000 more miles than B3 does, he still only has about the same number of miles that Dave's 95 E420 did when Dave took it drag racing at Sacramento and it did very well there! Better than I figured it would considering it was still all stock! Maybe B4 could beat B3's record! Stay tuned. Maybe the 034 guys will have yet another hero to cheer for! (I've gotta replace those damn plastic oil tubes though!)

And Steve, even if I had moved up North, I still would have been back! (I would've had to start a new thread though, and it would've fallen to you and the Sauceman to keep the So Cal. thread going.)
Regards,
Eric

ERIC! YOU ARE ALIVE! Welcome back from the dead, buddy. :D

Bummer about your Benzer. If the tranny was shifting fine, there's no need for a rebuild. Seals fail. Replace them. It's not easier to pull both engine+trans together. Drop the trans out the bottom, it's not as bad as everyone says. Ask Doug, he reported having his out in ~4 hours IIRC, although he does have a lift. Under $100 in parts to completely re-seal it. Now if it was having shift problems, that's a different story. My 87 300D tranny has never been rebuilt but it was resealed twice, once at ~150, again at ~250k, currently 324k and working fine with no rebuild.

The later balancer is just different, not necessarily much lighter. You could always check both types, but don't forget to include the weight of the pressed-on hub on the older style, and the different bolts+washer(s) between the two, etc. The later 1-pc balancer was used from 1995-up (approx). EPC doesn't indicate the crankshaft changed.

Thanks Dave.

The trans was shifting fine but I know of several fellows here (The Sauceman is one) who had their trannies blow right at about the mileage that mine is at now. I really think I should rebuild it if I go through the trouble of pulling it. Isn't that what you would do?

So I take it that the Sauceman forgot to send my love, is that correct?

Edit: Hey, I just noticed the change to your sig. What happened to your 95 E420?

It depends if you ever had any shifting issues. If the trans shifted perfectly with no slipping or flaring, I would not rebuild it. I would re-seal it. I've got a low-miles (like, <5k) rebuilt trans from a big-name rebuilder in SF and the damn thing has intermittent flare/slip issues, and it came with an old/bad overload protection switch that I had to replace. I have another trans that I know was rebuilt but I don't know when, and that one also has issues. Unless you're going to spend the money for a proper rebuild (i.e., sending it to Jono) then I wouldn't mess with it. The 4.2L is easier on the tranny anyway, it's not like you're pushing 500hp/500tq through there.

Plus, after you re-seal, you get to spend $11/qt for Red Line High Temp ATF!! Wheeeee! :spend: :spend:

Oh, yes, Saucer did send your love. He's off the hook.

:hornets:

I was thinking to let the same guy who built Saucer's ("Saucer", I just LOVE that!) trans rebuild mine. Saucer seems happy with his. (At least he still was the last time we talked about it.)

No slipping or flaring, still nice firm shifts (but for how much longer?) but there was ONE issue (and only one issue) with the trans: It seems to take a little longer to go into gear than it used to. Not much, but enough to annoy me when I'm in a hurry.

Man I would just HATE IT if this trans had to come out again 5,000 miles after it's re-seal.
