Hello,

Hereunder is the description of C.O.G. Classics GmbH about the 1991 500E they are selling (webpage here) - no VIN given on the ad:

For sale is an extremely well-maintained Mercedes-Benz 500 E, one of the most sought-after sports sedans of the 1990s and a true collector's item from the legendary collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Porsche.
The exterior of the vehicle is finished in the elegant and rare color Bornit Metallic, and the interior features high-quality beige leather upholstery that perfectly underscores the exclusive character of this model. Technically, the 500 E has already been overhauled once and is in generally good and solid condition.
The mileage is 156,000 km since new. The vehicle has a full service history, with all maintenance carried out exclusively by Mercedes-Benz and documented accordingly in the service booklet. The original registration document is available, as are all vehicle documents from the initial delivery to the present day, which further underlines the traceable history of the vehicle.
The Mercedes-Benz 500 E was sold in 2022 to the current owner, a regular customer from Berlin. Overall, this is an honest, well-maintained vehicle in very good condition that will appeal to both lovers of classic performance sedans and collectors.
A timeless classic with V8 power, high value retention, and special charisma.

I hope someone here more knowledgeable than me does a "snag list" on this one!? "Honest" car it might be, but even with my inexperienced eye, I can already pick out a number of reasons why the asking price is too high?

Main thing I see is a possible front-end accident. The upper radiator support appears to be replaced (hard to tell from these photos), indicating a substantial front-end hit. And, the AC condenser is not factory... and no shroud over the twin electric fans. Front passenger fender/bumper gap is sloppy. Looks nice otherwise. What's the stuff in the trunk/boot? Asking price is on the high side even if it was all original an undamaged, but with the equivalent of salvage-title damage... I dunno...

The question you always ask in Germany from the 100 or so cars I bought there : is it "unfallfrei" ( "accident free") Most dealers will reply honestly in my experience.

LAST THREE OR FOUR DIGITS of the VIN
Hi Gerry, I think I've got it.

If registration date (Sep. 3rd 1991) is to be believed, I would go with this one (built date Jul. 1991).

Due to the fact that in my search (using VIN Database for that colour combo - only 50 units exist in total) this is the closest (and maybe only) one by time, and also lack of certain options (no ACC, no seat memory function... but twin airbag being present, mainly), this would be my bet:

VIN = WDB1240361B585772

Besides my 'chosen' VIN these were the other 'candidates' (beware, some should be excluded by having/lacking certain options, or production date - e.g. I couldn't see any photo on the ad where the switch for sunroof is visible).

EDIT, I actually managed to spot the opening on the ceiling liner for the sunroof on some pics through front/rear screens, due to appropriate angle - and on one where the front head restraints are shown.

Such possibilities could be:

WDB1240361B506724
WDB1240361B529139 (w/o heated seats)
*WDB1240361B585772 (sunroof, electric steering cl., rear sun-blade, alarm, heated seats, Sound System/CD-charger)*
WDB1240361B638912 (10/1991, heated seats, alarm, sunroof)
WDB1240361B647277 (but 245 board-computer!, heated seats, sunroof & Sound System)
WDB1240361B683105 (12/1991, heated seats, roller blind, alarm, phone-antenna, sunroof, 869?, HZS!)
WDB1240361B722459 (02/1992!, sunroof, heated seats, roller blind, elect. steerign cl., alarm-SWISS, Active Bass Loudspeakers)
WDB1240361B768576 (04/1992, alarm, sunroof, heated seats, roller blind, elect. steerign cl.)
WDB1240361B779596 (sunroof and heated seats, extinguisher)
WDB1240361B798470 (06/1992, *fabric seats!*, roller blind, extinguisher, sunroof - w/o heated seats!)
