1992 500E - 3-in cat-back dual exhaust audio

@szvook, That sounds pretty beefy to me. I’ll bet it really sounds great when you mash the peddle:wahoo:

BTW, What phone is that on? I have a new IPhone 13. I haven’t tried it on my exhaust but the clarity of my voice in a video the other day really surprised me:)

Funny bit. Ever since the guy who built my exhaust put up the initial video (shot by him) after he installed the 200 cell cats, it has been jacked and used in other videos. This exhaust went through three stages of cats, after the exhaust was completed. Factory cats first, 400 cell cats second and third and final 200 cell cats.

Original video (shot on an iPhone 7), after the 200 cell cats were installed two days prior:

One year later (shot on an iPhone 6), after the cats had some time to break-in:

Jacked video one, opening scene:

Jacked video two, at 0:17:

Jacked video three, from 2:13 to 2:21:

That’s what the car is supposed to sound like IMO… I don’t know why they didn’t do that from the factory… except, Mercedes Benz. I’ve been so tempted to redo my S55 exhaust over the years. For now, the E5E and Allroad exhausts are pacifying me, as well as providing the best reasons why I should.

Your exhaust doesn't only sound great, but looks great as well! There are some who prefer the factory, and it's fine, but personally:
That’s what the car is supposed to sound like IMO…
^^^That!

I can't tell you how much shit I got from R129 owners (not that it matters to me) for resonator delete and non stock Carlsson rear box on my SL500... and when the time comes for the cats to be replaced, sure not going to be stock either!

Well done! Your .036 Looks great and sound great!

Regards,
D

@maw1124 My immediate response is do it and enjoy what a car should sound like. But this is coming from someone who never had a V8 before and always wanted to get one and let it sing.

@Duh_Vinci Thank you. To a certain degree, I can understand the purists point of view on these older models that still embodied the classic Mercedes persona. But those stiffs are stuck in the past and are too uptight for no reason. In the immortal words by Groucho Marx “I have a mind to join a club and beat you over the head with it.”

How much did it cost to get this exhaust? If you dont mind

The HJS cats I got were made to handle the power from a Lamborghini Murciélago LP640 (631 HP), so I can drive my car quite hard and did drive it hard on the [road course] tracks I used to visit. The brazing around the cats cores prevents the cats from being knocked loose from the exhaust pulses and prevents telescoping. The matrix substrate is also welded at the ends of the core, to further keep it in place. The matrix substrate is 100% stainless steel and can handle temperatures up to 1050 Celsius. The matrix is a HD design, which is the strongest design HJS offers and has a triple S-winding construction. The cats were provided by Fabspeed Motorsport and they are in Fort Washington, PA.

@Gurnek500e This exhaust was not cheap, the two HJS 200 cell cats alone were $1,400. The rest (parts and labor) came to $1,900. The X pipe and dual mufflers were not off the shelf, they were made for the car.
So 1900$ total get the exhaust done?

All i know is have never seen any 500 sound so sweet..!!!

Does it pass Cali smog drama?
Yes. Not by a lot, but it does pass. HJS uses a premium wash coat of metals on their substrate that has a higher density than OEM cats, which also makes HJS cats more expensive. But the trick is to select the right length and width of the cats to prevent the check engine light. From day one after the HJS cats were installed, my check engine light never came on and still doesn’t.

Mine has been done since 2011/2012 at the latest.

The stereo, wheels and exhaust were first on my list as not befitting my vision for the car. So those changes were all immediate, along with SS brake lines, drilled rotors and a few other minor cosmetic changes (clear corners, center console, etc.). Everything else has been gradual tweaking / restoration along the way.

Arnt, I gave up on the headers idea after learning that the oil filter housing and the steering linkage would get in the way of making proper headers. The shop that built my exhaust said it would be a pain in the arse to do. Then the cost was a bit too much compared the power gains I could get.

The ROI is really poor, especially on a 5.0L engine. Even on a 400hp 6.0L engine the gains from tubular headers may be single digits, which is not what you want from thousands of $$$ invested. The stock heads, manifolds, and exhaust all flow quite well to at least the low-400hp range. Based on other information out there, it seems there's more power to be found on the intake side (porting, valves, etc) than on the exhaust.

Did your installer use stock routing? How did it all fit?
Pretty much the stock routing. It fit fine, even with dual piping from the cats leading down to the dual mufflers. The bends in the piping for under the rear axle was the only area that needed some adjustment. This exhaust does not have any elbow joints welded on, so it took a few try’s to get the bends just right in the continuous piping.
