That is my understanding. I want to make a system where the 2 pieces are interchangeable with the stock parts.
Wait - this is for your new 400E, correct? The 400E has a different exhaust system behind the catalysts. From the factory it's a large 1-piece assembly with resonator+muffler welded together. The replacement parts (now NLA) used a slip-fit joint between the resonator and muffler. All of these are COMPLETELY different than the items used on the 500E.

You would need the complete cat-back system from 311RS, and also confirm the muffler tips would be appropriately located on the 400E, because the 500E bumper sits about 2 inches lower. I don't know if the 500E exhaust kits mentioned in post #1 will have the tips in the proper location on a 400E. And, there would be no point in mixing/matching with the stock components (even if they weren't welded together). With factory catalysts, there's no need for the stock resonator.

I want the flexibility to run the resonator if I find the muffler is too loud. Research indicates that this most likely won't be a problem.
Exhaust tip location was another concern, that's why I wanted the muffler alone to hang it in the appropriate spot.

You might want to look into a Fox cat-back system, and buy it with both the Fox resonator and Fox Y-pipe. That will allow you to interchange if desired.

Since the 500E mufflers have the tips lower than 400E, you can only raise the 500E muffler so much... there's a limit to how much "adjustment" is possible. Better to get something that's designed to fit the car.

I am working on finalizing the E420 rear exhaust does someone have the dimensions of the width? trying to determine if we need to change the pipe size for the turn down tip so it fits without needing to modify the valance.
