Hi guys,

i have been able to source a lot of parts I need with your help in a short amount of time, needed so thanks for that, but I am still looking for a few more things.

Near mint 92-93 e500 front door panels in grey (mine have holes drilled from cup holders. They are repaired but ugly

silver arrow brake kit

time period correct exhaust /muffler (I.e Remus, amg, etc.)

i also need the plastic license plate delete cover for the front bumper. I have a big ugly gap up front right now.

pm me or post here if you can help me with any of this!

-Chris

Hi Chris,

1) Door panels from any 1990-1995 W124 with gray leather will be the same. Should be lots of donors available. David Hendy might have some. The leather insert can be replaced separately if the rest of your door panel is in good shape.

2) Make sure to read up on the SA brake kit... you'll also need to replace LCA's with new OE at a cost of $900+, and get an alignment at the dealer, besides the cost of calipers/rotors/pads. Don't forget to consider a 17" spare wheel since the stock spare won't fit up front after the brake upgrade. Plan on near $2k when it's all done.

3) A proper bolt-on Remus/etc muffler will be REALLY hard to find. I haven't seen one for sale in a few years, IIRC...?

4) Front plate delete is relatively inexpensive new, p/n 124-885-20-23 for the 1992-1993 black filler, $69 list. And you probably won't find one used. (Note: The part number Spaceman listed above is for a primer-gray panel for 1994-up models, that would be painted to match the bumper.)

As Dave stated. The leather insert for the door panels are available for MB or you can source them from other W124's with the same color as your interior. I would contact Gainsville MB or the Classic Center because I like new stuff. I purchased new front inserts from MB Classic center last year. They aren't that difficult to change but be careful removing the door panels because the plastic tabs can become brittle and break off. Take your time and don't rush it.

The SA brake upgrade is not for the faint of heart on a 92-93 car. Plan on anywhere from $2000-$3000 by the time you do the front lower control arms, alignment, rotors, calipers, brake lines, fluid and pads. Depending on where you source the calipers they may need to be rebuilt.

Leistung Autohauz offers a nice cutback system but it isn't cheap. If you do a search here you should find some info on it here.

It's only money and you can't take it with you.

oh no! that means i got the wrong one. i have a '92...

Thanks you guys are awesome. Anyone have a part number for the new mb door inserts?

Also, don't want to mix threads up but I want to lower my car once I receive my e55 monoblocks from Ernesto, what options do I have with this suspension set up, particularly the rear. I would like to drop over an inch.

Chris

Pretty much the only and best option is the H&R springs. There's plenty here on the forum about the H&Rs, so do some searching in the suspension section and you'll find info and photos of what it looks like.

Some folks feel that the H&Rs lower things a bit too much.

I don't know if the AMG E60 springs are still available -- others can confirm or deny that as I don't follow it too closely -- but if they are available they're going to cost a pretty penny.

Be very careful with lowering. In general I don't recommend dropping a full inch, but some people have done it before. Having the car sit on the suspension stops isn't practical for street driving. The AMG E60 kit dropped 10mm (less than 1/2 inch), IIRC. Only the E60 rear springs are available but not the front (or vice-versa, I forget) and they are crazy money. In general I'd put 1-pt pads up front to drop slightly, and either get the Limited rear springs (which are slightly shorter than stock), or cut 1/2 coil off the stock rears and adjust SLS so the rear matches the front with a full tank of fuel.

If you really want to drop it a full inch, you'll need the H&R springs, probably thick/tall pads up front (3-4pt), thin (1pt) pad in the rear, and SLS adjustment. My wife's 500E came with H&R's and after fiddling with the height for quite a while, I removed them, and re-installed stock springs adjusted as described above. You'll need an alignment afterwards so this is the time to do ALL other necessary suspension/steering work... check & replace as necessary: tie rod assemblies, drag link, idler arm, LCA (replace with late style if planning brake upgrades), struts, strut mounts, stop buffers, dust boots, etc.

Primer vs. black is the only difference and since your lowers are painted it's not an issue for you. Either would need to be paint matched.

oh great! hadn't removed it from the box yet, but wasn't looking forward to sending it back for an exchange.
going to bring it up to the shop for painting one of these days.

Anyone have a part number to the grey door inserts?

I have it in a file on my desktop at work but I can tell you with certainty that they are NLA (well at least in grey) as I tried to order them a few months ago since my car also came with cup holders. Your only options are to either find a used set of door panels without cup holders or to pull those pieces out of yours and take them to an upholstery shop and have them recover them in leather.

Gray front door pleated leather inserts are:

124-720-77-62-7C12 (left)
124-720-78-62-7C12 (right)

I was going to warn you they might be NLA... and it sounds like 600Eric confirmed this a few months ago. At $414 list EACH, they would not have been enticing anyway. I am pretty confident you will be able to locate good used ones that will clean up nicely. Recovering is another option, maybe try GAAH or GAT upholstery shops in SoCal.

I purchased both front black leather inserts from MBCC last August.

124-720-77-62-9A84 left front
List $230.00
Yours $163.30
1 week from Germany

124-720-78-62-9A84 right front
List $164.00
Yours $116.44
1 week from Germany

I suspect the prices may have gone up this year. I would definitely contact MBCC and Gainsville if you want new. robert.woods@mbusa.com

Weird... black is now $238 list and $94 list for left/right. Talk about your price discrepancies between colors!

I haven't looked in a while for grey ones. Most the P n P ones have been every other color.

I was amazed today that someone took the driver's seat on the mushroom- and there is the minty passenger. Guess they didn't know the trick on moving the armrest over to a donor seat.

Thanks Dave and yeah at $414 you would have to be crazy to buy them even if they were available. I'm sure you could get them recovered in new leather for less. I just got real lucky as a couple months ago some guy on eBay that was right around the corner from Jeff's shop Lake Forest listed a used set of Grey front door panels ago and I think I got the pair for about $100 - $150 delivered. They needed a good scrubbing but I think they cleaned up enough to work but if not I will just have them re-dyed

Dammit!!!! You beat me by 2 minutes lol. Let me know if deal falls through

Chris,

I told David in the PM that since you were the one that initially inquired about these to give you first shot at them. The only reason I inquired about them is that he said they were a "Nice" set. As I stated in my post above the ones I have cleaned up "OK" (probably fine by most peoples standards) but they are not perfect and given then restoration I am doing on my car if possible I would really like to find a near mint set of these especially since I was able to by new handles and map pockets for both doors as well as a new door panel itself for the right one. In short pretty much other than for the seats whatever MB had left in stock for a Grey interior pieces I bought.

Gentleman,

i am on the hunt for parts again. I am looking for the following:

92 500e arm rest in grey. ( I am presuming this arm rest is 500e specific?)

92 500e fire extinguisher and bracket (supposedly the bracket is still available nib from Mercedes Benz but if I can save money buying used I will)

92 500e secondary air pump in good operating condition

94 euro e500 clear side markers (will buy or trade for my 94 Bosch us spec side markers in mint condition)

let me know what you have.

regards,
Chris

Chris, just a few comments:

1) The standard arm rest will be the same as all other 124's from 1986-1992 with leather interior. Shouldn't be hard to find one.

2) I've been told that new fire extinguishers come empty, and getting one charged may be difficult. I think you can buy the 1.0kg new, but not the older 1.3kg which would be period correct for the 124.

3) The air/smog pump is a 1-year only item, donors are 1992 400E and 1992 500E. The pulley is both different width and different diameter than 93-up.

4) Clear front corners should be available new from various sources, AFAIK.

GSXR,

thanks for the response. You always come through with the answers.

do you have any experience with rebuilt secondary air pumps? Will it become problematic shortly after again? Most rebuilders are only offering one year warranty.

regards,
Chris

Your options are limited for the air pumps. I'd probably try a rebuilt if you don't have easy access to a known-good used one. If only the bearing is bad, you can try to replace the bearing... but if anything inside is worn/noisy, it's probably better to replace the whole thing. The rebuilders insist on documented proof of air valve replacement at the same time for the warranty. I'm guessing you don't want to shell out $2k for a new one, huh? ;) Looks like $300 for a rebuilt at AutohausAZ, plus core.

BTW, try eBay.de for fire extinguishers. Use Google translate to figure out the correct German term to search for. Then try to find a seller willing to ship to USA.

:apl:

What are the symptoms of an air pump going out?
Mine is pretty noisy for the first couple of minutes then quiets down.

That IS the symptom. :( They should be very quiet, although I know that is subjective and difficult to explain via keyboard. It only runs for a few minutes after a cold start.

As things get worse, other symptoms may included a pulley that is visibly misaligned (due to failing bearing), and brown dust covering the pulley/pump area (from the clutch wearing, due to seizing internals, or cockeyed pulley). And, you may get an intermittent CEL (DM code 4). More info at the threads below:
