Re: 1993 500E FOR SALE

John Is this your car or MB of South Hampton? Have the wiring harness's been replaced? Can you post pix of interior?

Might I ask what the car sold for? I am original owner of '92 Crystal Green 500E under 54k miles. Car has been serviced every year by local MB dealer all work needed always done. Virtually all records. Health issues may require sale.

Sold it for $18,900. The car has some curb rash on the wheels, otherwise it needed nothing. Even had the 60k service done so it was a great deal. I think the '92 is more desireable so you may be able to get more. Good luck.

I never quite understood why the '92 model was considered more desireable... was is strictly due to the (rated) HP difference? Or is there some other reason?

I agree with Dave M, I do not consider the 1992 more desirable, I prefer the 1994 model & in Europe I prefer the LTD, one of which I have.Just personal preference.

It's a good debate, and based 100% on personal preference. Some folks prefer the earlier models as more desirable (particularly the 1992) because of the more traditional MB "look" as well as the 7 HP WOT enhancement that the 1993 and 1994 models didn't come from the factory with.

Others prefer the facelifted 1994 models. Purely from a technical standpoint, I'd have to say that the larger brakes and host of running improvements that started with the 1993 model year probably make the 1993 and 1994 cars more "desirable" from a refinement view on things. The 7 HP WOT enhancement can be easily overcome with the addition of a 1992 LH computer -- a plug and play operation.

Although I'm a 1994 owner, I do appreciate the earlier cars and frankly, would happily own any model year of the E500E. They are all great cars.

In Benz collector circles, generally the latter cars are indeed most desirable because of the cumulative changes and improvements that Benz makes through a model's production run. This may not apply 100% to the E500E due to the rather short production run, and the fact that all of them were handmade and thus quite collectible in their own right, but it's definitely a trend of note with regard to Benzes. Very much like the 560SECs are. Although SECs were available from 1982 through 1991, in various guises and drivetrain types, the latter 560SEC models (particularly the latter years of 1989-1991) are always considered most desirable and collectible because of their larger displacement (i.e. more power), more modern safety aspects (dual airbags from 1989 onwards, ABS on all cars, etc.), decent radios from 1989-1991, and many running changes from the production run that resulted in the ultimate improvement of the cars. Though the SECs never really changed in looks (except for the lower cladding between the Gen 1 and Gen 2 cars) they definitely changed in refinement with a better isolated rear subframe & diff carrier on the later cars, and so forth.

Or the R107 560SLs (only available in a few countries however) compared to the 280SLs, 450SLs, 380SLs, 500SLs, and so forth. The latter 560SL cars with ABS, driver's side airbag, refined subframes and suspension, and other changes throughout the 18-year model life of the car are considered the best ones (500SLs best where 560s were not sold). Despite that the R107 changed externally not a whit during the entire production run with the exception of the door handles (earlier and later cars) and the addition of a slightly longer front spoiler on the later 500 and 560SL cars.

Cheers,
Gerry
