About this Collectable
Mercedes E60 AMG
We all know the Mercedes E-class type W124 as a reliable taxi and mileage eater. In the early 1990s, Mercedes decided that a version with a big V8 would also be nice. The 300E was quite a smooth car, but more than 320 hp in an apparently standard sedan is of course much more of an understatement. Since the widened bodywork (necessary because of the big V8) and other adjustments, such as a new tunnel for the gearbox and catalytic converters, did not fit in with Mercedes' assembly line rhythm, the order was given to neighbor Porsche. They could really use that at that time, because they were not in a good position. Porsche still had some space left in the building where the 959 was previously screwed together and so it was done. More than 10,000 500Es were built, of which just over 900 were Limited versions.
Since there are always customers who always want a little more and AMG had/has a listening ear for that, it was decided to make an extra liter. On paper it resulted in more than 60 hp (in reality almost 100 hp) and 100 NM extra power. Not only was the stroke volume of the M119 V8 increased, but the camshafts were also provided with a “hotter” profile, the intake was redesigned and some software adjustments were made. Still today, but certainly at that time (30 years ago) very serious values. Naturally, everything that was needed was improved and adapted to handle the extra power. Only 148 units left the AMG workshop, of which 45 units were based as Limited. In the 1990s, AMG was really something special!
The example we offer is one from the series of 45. In February 1994, this 500 E Limited left the factory and was offered by MB as “Neuwagen” to AMG for conversion to E60, after which it was presented to AMG by a manager from the headquarters. from Mercedes has been used. After the car arrived in Japan as a so-called Jahreswagen, it was sold in the USA to the last Dutch owner in 2020. The car has been very well maintained and
there is also a chassis dynamometer printout showing that AMG stated the power quite conservatively, as there is 418 hp instead of 381 hp.
The supplied data card shows which options were installed in addition to the "Limited" option, such as sapphire black paint, electrically adjustable seats and steering column, sliding and tilting roof, seat heating and special AMG rims. Finding these correct AMG wheels for this car was like finding a needle in a haystack. Over the years, the car was once equipped with a so-called wide set, while the original size of three-piece 8.5x17 all around with a correct ET of 30 is difficult or impossible to find. They have now been mounted with a set of new tires.
The E60 has been mainly maintained in Japan and this is documented by all available invoices from 30,000 km in 1999 to 142,000 km in 2018.

Octane Magazine has devoted an extensive article to this
E60 AMG
Our opinion
It doesn't get much more special. A W124 500E is already special, but an E60 is almost impossible to find. Currently 2 are offered in Europe on Mobile.de, 1 of which is the Limited version. If you are looking for the ultimate “Autobahn Brenner” in a Taxi shell, this is your chance. Fast, comfortable, unobtrusive and an icon from Mercedes history. Not a bargain, but probably an excellent investment for the future that you can also enjoy.
About the seller
The seller traded in the car from the (only) Dutch owner, who took care of the complete documentation of the car and also managed to obtain the correct 17-inch rims (OZ Racing, Aero 3). He also replaced the Japanese “Jakuzo” decorations with original parts. The inner door panels are also original again and
the headlights were also replaced by the original set with the chromed reflector edge at the bottom.
