SOLD 1994 E500 Limited AMG 6.0L, Sapphire Black/Black/Gray, 146kkm, auction (Netherlands)

There is no such thing as an extended OEM leather package. This car has the Limited leather seats, “Raffleder” (German name for dimpled/crumpled leather) door cards which were standard for all E-Class cars with leather, including the 500E and then an aftermarket leather/alcantara application for all the other bits like consoles and headliner.

Seems someone just customized the car to their specific liking.

Exactly correct. Most of the changes were preferences by previous owners.

The only real mystery is what happened to the original door panels... my guess is they were faded and looked bad, and were replaced with "standard" pleated leather, not realizing there is a place in Germany that can restore the originals or create replicas (which would have been the preferred option). As with all the other changes, this too can be rectified.

:pc1:

Current bid $30K with 2 days to go. NO RESERVE. I don't think I could stomach watching this if it were my car, but from previous experience these online auctions get interesting in the last 30mins. GLWAS.

There's ZERO WAY this car is going to hit the "recommended" bid on the auction. Not even close. RM is smoking some serious crack with that expected sale price. They seem to think that those magic three letters "A" "M" and "G" are going to boost the price into the stratosphere. Nope.

:crack:

Is this one of those "one of 12" cars, by the way?

I've seen stranger things happen recently with other marque variants, but if the measuring stick is RS auction $45K RNM then this seller is in trouble...

The springs on this car as per photos are made in Japan by a known and famous auto parts company called Toyoshima.
They are made for a garage called DasAutoGanz and they are stamped “DAS AMG SPEC” as per the garage’s owner request to Toyoshima company.
The springs are made exactly on the springs of AMG W124 E60 specifications.
“Das AMG SPEC’s Toyoshima springs rate specifications are:
Front: 9.8kgf/mm
Rear: 8.8kgf/mm
The original MB W124 E60 AMG springs specs are:
Front: 10kgf/mm
Rear: 9kgf/mm
I have purchased the same set of springs for my 1992 500E Midnight Blue.
I noticed the word “SPEC” on the springs and I am sure that those are the springs so called brand.
***Info corrected as per email communications with the Japanese guy.

Can you please post elsewhere the purchase information and spec of this set of springs provided they are a suitable replacement for the NLA German AMG suspension springs? Thank you.

100%, I would be concerned....I actually hope the seller gets in the ballpark of what this is worth

Now that we've entered the era of the "virtual" car auction, in the mold of BaT, there's nothing preventing the seller from simply refusing to honor the deal. They'd be out the fees, but in some circumstances it might be a sound financial move.

UNLESS the auction house is collecting the Title when the car is consigned....

Now at $36,000 with six hours to go. We'll see some big-time action toward the end of the auction, but I don't think this car will go much above $100K, if even that. Certainly nowhere near the $125-155K suggestion.

I believe we're looking at somewhere around $90K + fees. Which may not be a bad deal if someone wants to hang onto it for a while, and let it continue to appreciate.

When are we starting the $5 guessing game on final hammer down prices..????

The three strikes I see against this car hitting a sky-high price are:

1) Relatively high miles (144kkm / 90kmi) -- this makes the car a "driver" and not desirable to any odometer-buyer out there

2) It spent pretty much all its life in Japan -- which is a black hole in many ways when it comes to MBs

3) It has some mods that take away its "1 of 12"-ness, like the replaced door panels.

Mainly the first point above, though.

Of course, the car has $5-10K of deferred maintenance, as well.

Talk about a nail-biter. Less than 2 mins to go and slowly creeping to $60k...

EDIT: Sold for $85k plus fees? Someone got a good deal. And the seller may be bummed.

Ouch. Seller lost on this one. Did we ever find out how much it sold for at that JDM auction back in January. Import charges plus duties and fees had to be around $5-$6k alone.

So, would i have won the $5 entry “Kitty” drawing on this one?

I'm not aware of any public access to JDM auction results. You need someone with connections at the Japan auction to report on sale prices, and I don't know how far in the past they can look up results (days? weeks? months?).

Wild guessing, I suspect the seller may have either broke even, or made a small profit. I would be surprised if it sold for ~$100k USD or more more in Japan due to the missing code 957 and other modifications. The high-ish odometer (for Japan anyway) may not have helped.

Disclaimer - I don't have JDM contacts and I could be way off here. Anyone in the know that can fill us in?

:tumble:

Thanks JAB12

wonder if the price they list includes buyers fees and I wonder what the RM fees are (20%?)

10% for buyer plus another listing fee + 5% of sale price for seller. That's how it was last time I inquired some years ago for one of my other cars.

Car is bound to be $103K+ after transport, tax, title and tag. Plus still wondering what this 'title in transit' item represents in terms of time that one has to wait to plate the car and start enjoying it. $113K+ if we add @gsxr and @gerryvz punch list items. That is some serious 💰💰💰💰💰💰 for non instant gratification. Nonetheless, it is very good to see these are appreciated in some venues.

We all know who really got a good deal a few month ago ;)

I might be wrong in the previous post, I saw the auction results coming live, most of the cars made the estimate; except for this one that was nearly half the estimate! what happened?

I think someone based the estimate on inaccurate information; it seemed very optimistic IMO.

$125k- $155k, which translates into $138k - $171k after fees, just didn't seem right for a car missing code 957.

"Title in transit" likely didn't help.

Just to inform you all that the car is now in the Netherlands. After having seen it the first time live (couple of month delay due to COVID constraints on transportation), I'm going to make the car road ready first (probably just a head light conversion) as is and drive it. With regard to the comments, the door panels are for sure not standard (the rear have even an opening for traditional hand slingers). Not sure on the rear rims yet. Otherwise no real surprises. Next step will be to get the AMG documentation rounded up and start collecting some of the needed original parts. Will post some pictures when on the road.

@JAB12, Thank you for providing the thread for AMG documents. As a result I got hold of a document / form to be issued (see attachment, to AMG as Fahrzeug: AMG and further filled under Sontiges) and got the homologation and certification letter with one week with no cost. German grundlichkeit! I have to add that all communication took place in German and the form was stamped of by a local dealer.

For now, the correct headlights and a the correct leather interior parts have been secured.

To be continued.............

Up for auction.

Misleading to claim 1 of 148 and 1 of 147 when it doesn't even have 957 in the datacard. Even worse, "The example we offer is one from the series of 45."

E60 LIMITED for sell in Netherands

About this Collectable

Mercedes E60 AMG

We all know the Mercedes E-class type W124 as a reliable taxi and mileage eater. In the early 1990s, Mercedes decided that a version with a big V8 would also be nice. The 300E was quite a smooth car, but more than 320 hp in an apparently standard sedan is of course much more of an understatement. Since the widened bodywork (necessary because of the big V8) and other adjustments, such as a new tunnel for the gearbox and catalytic converters, did not fit in with Mercedes' assembly line rhythm, the order was given to neighbor Porsche. They could really use that at that time, because they were not in a good position. Porsche still had some space left in the building where the 959 was previously screwed together and so it was done. More than 10,000 500Es were built, of which just over 900 were Limited versions.

Since there are always customers who always want a little more and AMG had/has a listening ear for that, it was decided to make an extra liter. On paper it resulted in more than 60 hp (in reality almost 100 hp) and 100 NM extra power. Not only was the stroke volume of the M119 V8 increased, but the camshafts were also provided with a “hotter” profile, the intake was redesigned and some software adjustments were made. Still today, but certainly at that time (30 years ago) very serious values. Naturally, everything that was needed was improved and adapted to handle the extra power. Only 148 units left the AMG workshop, of which 45 units were based as Limited. In the 1990s, AMG was really something special!

The example we offer is one from the series of 45. In February 1994, this 500 E Limited left the factory and was offered by MB as “Neuwagen” to AMG for conversion to E60, after which it was presented to AMG by a manager from the headquarters. from Mercedes has been used. After the car arrived in Japan as a so-called Jahreswagen, it was sold in the USA to the last Dutch owner in 2020. The car has been very well maintained and there is also a chassis dynamometer printout showing that AMG stated the power quite conservatively, as there is 418 hp instead of 381 hp.
The supplied data card shows which options were installed in addition to the "Limited" option, such as sapphire black paint, electrically adjustable seats and steering column, sliding and tilting roof, seat heating and special AMG rims. Finding these correct AMG wheels for this car was like finding a needle in a haystack. Over the years, the car was once equipped with a so-called wide set, while the original size of three-piece 8.5x17 all around with a correct ET of 30 is difficult or impossible to find. They have now been mounted with a set of new tires.
The E60 has been mainly maintained in Japan and this is documented by all available invoices from 30,000 km in 1999 to 142,000 km in 2018.

The Octane Magazine has devoted an extensive article to this E60 AMG

Our opinion

It doesn't get much more special. A W124 500E is already special, but an E60 is almost impossible to find. Currently 2 are offered in Europe on Mobile.de, 1 of which is the Limited version. If you are looking for the ultimate “Autobahn Brenner” in a Taxi shell, this is your chance. Fast, comfortable, unobtrusive and an icon from Mercedes history. Not a bargain, but probably an excellent investment for the future that you can also enjoy.

About the seller

The seller traded in the car from the (only) Dutch owner, who took care of the complete documentation of the car and also managed to obtain the correct 17-inch rims (OZ Racing, Aero 3). He also replaced the Japanese “Jakuzo” decorations with original parts. The inner door panels are also original again and the headlights were also replaced by the original set with the chromed reflector edge at the bottom.

Equipment

This E60 AMG is factory equipped with:

• Limited Edition version
• Sapphire black finish
• Parking heater
• Electrically adjustable seats
• Electrically operated sliding/tilting roof

Question: where does the operating panel go for the aux/stationary/parking heater (Standheizung 228) on cars (like this one) with E60 AMG center consoles installed?

No such thing as an "E60 AMG Center console"
Other items that never existed in post merged W124036 are items such as AMG steering wheel and gear shift, AMG Styling package, AMG interior and seats, AMG Exhaust. Wheels are limited to the 8.5x17 AMG Aero II 3 piece wheel.

Plenty of photo documentation of the factory E60 AMG available for reference.

As noted in the previous post, this car had a LOT of non-factory, non-original modifications performed in Japan.

Although the datacard indicates this car came from the factory with stationary heating, the controller is conspicuously absent now.

:pc1:

No such thing as an "E60 AMG Center console"
Other items that never existed in post merged W124036 are items such as AMG steering wheel and gear shift, AMG Styling package, AMG interior and seats, AMG Exhaust. Wheels are limited to the 8.5x17 AMG Aero II 3 piece wheel.

Plenty of photo documentation of the factory E60 AMG available for reference.
As far as I know the center console pictured here was available as an optional item from AMG. The 500 E 6.0 Press car that was tested by Auto Motor und Sport Magazine featured a car with that option installed, so I don't think it's correct to say there is no E60 AMG center console. See here for that article and associated photos

Hi Tim,

I am aware of the press article, this was a pre-merger 500E 6.0L conversion. The article verifies that the console existed, but pre-Merger and not for the Factory E60 AMG. Recaro Sport seats were also fitted on some cars, but all as pre-merger cars.

Hi @195910, how would you name the console then? AMG console sounds right to me….in either case, I’m not aware of where the controller for the Standheizung would go with that console, so I wouldn’t know the answer to @AdamCabrio’s question 🙂

Point taken. But my question remains: why on earth would someone (in Japan) swap the stock center console for this one, knowing that he will lose the factory fitted (and in my view desirable) 228 option?? I just don't get it.

Not being a fan of customization in general, I applaud the efforts of @RuudE420 to change back some Japanese "Jakuzo" decorations with original stock items, and getting the 6L Affalterbach drop-in documented and certified. Which he did after his purchase in the Monterey sale (August 2020). But instead of now enjoying this beast, he apparently recently traded it in to the current seller, after adding only 1000 km's. Sigh.... So, this non-957 is seeing the world: Germany (one year), Japan (25 years), USA (RM auction only), the Netherlands (since 2020) and after a few days who knows to where. Anyone bidding? Looking at post #72 plus the work done on it since, we can all figure out what the minimum auction result should be.....

I will keep watching it (without popcorn), latest bid € 100K, six more days to go....

No doubt it will bring 6 digits, so nothing for the seller to be upset about ;)

We are just discussing (generally not vehicle specific) the authenticity of AMG components on the E60 AMG

Hi Tim, yeah you could call it an AMG console, just not an E60 AMG Console because its a pre-merger Item.
Its kinda like mounting a set of AMG Monoblocks off a W210 on a W211 E55 AMG.. Authentic part just not correct.

1 more day to go. Highest bid currently € 102K.

On that last bit: that remains to be seen....
(1) Current highest bid is nowhere near the (highly optimistic) € 149.900 that it is (still) advertized for on various sites (after € 164.950 had been tried in 2022);
(2) No idea what the Reserve is (if any);
(3) It didn't sell on Febr. 3, 2023 in the Paris ArtCurial.

What the F... I made a screenshot from the auction house page (March 27) evidencing that this car was sold for € 119K.

Just now had a browse through the The Collectables site again, where I - strange enough - couldn't find this car in the archive. However, looking at the section "Verwacht" (= Expected):

not sure what's going on, last bid € 104K and then the screen went blank......(not me bidding!)
