I'd take the claim of "no rust at all" with a grain of - wait for it - salt. Photos of the undercarriage would be nice to prove this claim.

Headliner has some issues. Front bumper is aftermarket, not AMG, not AMG replica either. Side skirts and rear bumper are likely replica items also (can't tell from the small photos). Looks nice otherwise, has ASR and heated seats. Asking price is a bit on the high side IMO, assuming zero service records, as typical for dealer sales. Plan on the car needing a few thousand $$$ in deferred maintenance as DIY, double that if you are paying an indy shop for repairs.

:watchdrama:

Looks like a nice example in my favorite color 040 Blk/Blk. :thumbsup2: I’ll let someone else comment on the price.

PS: I hate those slimy tires pic 51/51. I’d rather use Mothers “Back to Black” which makes tire rubber look new w/o the slime shine.

In your experience, would a body-kit like this and the AMG badges etc negatively affect the sale price? I can confirm from chatting to the seller that there are no paper records aside from the carfax. I didn't pick up on the headliner issue, where did you see that?

Generally the add-ons have no major effect on the price/value, unless they are all genuine AMG pieces, in which case the price would be higher if they are all in good condition / undamaged.

That's a shame.

It's not very obvious, but something is going on at the trailing edge of the sunroof opening. Almost like the headliner was removed and recovered, but not attached properly at the sunroof opening.

This looks odd at the top of the passenger side C-pillar, but it's hard to tell from the small, blurry photos. Might just be a bad picture.

Copy that; I like the look of the front bumper but equally having a period correct AMG style bumper would be the better play.

That's a shame.
Agreed; looks like it was well loved over the years so for the paper trail to go missing seems like a total shame. I rang a few companies from the Carfax and some of them still have the records, which is something. From what I've been told, the car was garaged by the owner for the last 5 years and driven very rarely. It was to be passed onto another family member that turned down taking ownership...! A local company that specialises in imports can carryout an inspection so I'll revert back when I've done further due diligence.

Thanks for pointing out the headliner- I hadn't noticed and the pictures are tactfully done to not give much of an indication!
Ps. I'm new to the forum, thanks for having me.

Hi Folks,

Further digging complete: tires need replaced, headliner likely needs repair/ replacement (well spotted @gsxr), check engine light is on (they haven't investigated the fault yet), the yellow dash light for a headlight fault is on and yes - there is rust underneath! Money needs to be spent but the engine apparently runs well and drives nicely. I've a lot more questions for them that I'm waiting to hear back on. That said; I'm still keen to jump into this... There is a fine line between bravery and stupidity - and I'm unsure what side I'm stood on. Any wisdom would be greatly appreciated!

I was sent a few videos of underneath the car and with it running etc. Is there any chance I could forward the videos either onto the forum or directly to @gsxr or another enthusiast with better knowledge up help me price what a fair offer would be based on work required? Any help would be appreciated!

Driving

Interior

Underside

(100% rust free claim is debunked!)

Exterior

I spent $150 on an inspection at 'Finny's Complete Auto Repair - Luxury Imports'. The inspector (close friend of the seller) sent me two fairly poor quality videos (one of the underside and one of the interior) and said over a phone call- yea, engines nice, everything probably works but the tires need replaced. He never responded to any further questions.

The seller checked the electric windows, heated seats, infotainment, AC, heat, door locks and informed me that everything works apart from the AC. However, I have no evidence on video or message response to back that (all coms are over the phone). There are several other questions that weren't answered: they don't know what the check engine light is for, or the bulb fault light is, nothing looked at on transmission, fluids or wiring harnesses, all pictures are blurry, videos (imo) are poor quality. The 100% no rust claim only to find that the underside has plenty is a red flag for me.

At minimum the car will need work underside to futureproof the car. A good service for piece of mind as no records exist, A/C might need work, new tires, the dash lights will need addressed and who knows what else. What would a fair offer be? Thanks!

That's about all the info I have! I'm interested but equally want to pass on info to help anybody else that's very keen. I probably sounded overtly sceptical in the post- the guys at the dealership have been friendly and responsive (y).

Exhaust system missing CATs and the heat shields are pretty rusted out. I couldn’t spot the Oxygen Sensor maybe somebody else can see it in the video.

Other rust looks minor to me nothing terribly wrong. Have you looked in the battery box inside the trunk?

Hey @TerryA! No - all that I uploaded to YouTube is everything that was sent to me. Would that be to look for rust / wiring damage / sway bar/ suspension mounts?

You paid them for a PPI and they won't respond to questions? WOW!

Hmm. Wonder if it just "needs recharged", or if there's a more serious problem with the AC.

Yep. There's more rust than I'd want personally. Not terrible, I've seen far worse, but still.

I'm terrible at pricing, but if you REALLY like this car, I'd be aiming in the $5k-$6k range... and probably wouldn't go much higher. I doubt a dealer will drop that far.

If you have emissions testing where you live, the lack of cats is another headache.

:seesaw:

@gsxr (and everybody else) thanks very much for your insights. I offered 7 and they said no, it's too rare a car to sell at that price... Correct me if I'm wrong but I would describe it as an uncommon car - but not rare!

Anyway, there's a stunningly beautiful low mileage 1993 280E sedan at a great price and another beautifully kept (but higher high mileage) 1994 E320 wagon for sale close by so I'll probably go in one of those directions instead (which would you choose- wagon or sedan?!?).

Sorry I won't be joining you folks properly with wheels, I was hoping to get this one over the line and get to the meet ups 😕!

For $7k, I'd pass, given what's visible in the video and the other info.

You are 100% correct.

Really depends if you want/need a wagon. Both of these will be relatively underpowered, if that's a concern. The 280E (technically, badged "300E 2.8" is sort of a stripper / base model, the M104 replacement for the old 260E. Personally I'd skip either one unless they are rare/desirable color combinations, and/or with rare options, which I doubt.

Most GTG's tend to welcome any MB's, and in particular any 124 chassis. No worries there!

Thanks for the advice, yea they're certainly not fast 😂. The wagons have an appealing look and a nostalgia factor from when I was growing up. The 280 sedan is just beautifully kept- with a caramel mb-tex interior that's really something. Anyways, I'm rambling. It's all fun! Hope to get to see of the meet ups in the NE this summer! Thanks 🙏
