300CE Upgrades

I will be starting on my 88 300CE daily driver project soon. Besides the usual mechanical reconditioning that gets done with any used W124 car I need to rebuild the transmission and will do so with a working used transmission I purchased a while ago. I’m not the person who can let well enough alone and I picked up a 92 300-24 SL convertible for $1300. Car still looks pretty good but you guessed it has a broken transmission having lost reverse. It pains me to buy any Mercedes as a parts car because it goes against my grain to scrap any car that can be fixed with a good body.

My plan is to replace my M103 with the M104 since these are both KE Jet cars. I know the early M104 has that expensive EZL but this one is good and it looks as if the head has been off for either head work or to repair oil leaks. I’m also thinking of rebuilding the 722.5 transmission knowing it’s a goofy hybrid. What I’m also thinking about is using the 3:69 differential with the overdrive which will give me a respectable highway cruise but also be able to get off the line with the softer bottom end torque of the 24V engine.

so I guess my question is can I use the 210mm differential case in the 6cyl W124 rear subframe or must I use the .034 rear subframe? Also why stop there while I have a donor car. What about brakes and steering box? I know the 034,036 use a version of the R129 steering box but is that box specific to the 034, 036 cars? I will need to go to a 16” wheel if I use the R129 brakes Which is something I was going to do anyway. Are the early R129 brakes a direct swap?

The late 124 with M104 engine has the 210 differential, with the right cover/etc this will bolt in to the 6-cyl subframe. Brakes can be transferred from the R129 to the 300CE. I don't think the R129 steering box is plug+play but you could try for grins.
