400E to 500E EZL Compatibility

Hello all,

Soon I will begin my endeavor to swap a 5.0 M119 from a 1992 W140 into my 1992 E400. I have acquired an LH computer (012 54563 32) and now I am on the hunt for an EZL to match. Question is, can I use the EZL from my current engine, the 1992 4.2 or do I need to find an EZL that will suit the 5.0?

Thanks

In a word: NO.

The engine may physically run on the other type’s EZL, but it will not run well nor correctly.

Absolutely NOT advisable.

Both the LH unit and the EZL from the 5-liter engine are required for other 5-liter engines. 4.2 should not be used.

See the compatibility matrix for LH units and EZLs that is in the Wiki.

Looks like I will be needing a 013 545 64 32 EZL.
As Gerry said, the 5.0 will run & drive on the 4.2 EZL, but it's not recommended.

Note that all 5.0L EZL modules are interchangeable, there are 6 total (4 Siemens, 2 Bosch) and you can use any of them. Siemens are preferred, you probably won't even find any Bosch for sale.

You may have already read this, but assuming you have a USA-spec 1992 400E, the first-gear upshift delay relay (K29/1) may need to be removed when using the 5.0L EZL. This may not apply to non-US models which have 2.65 axle ratio and second-gear start. Might be some useful info buried in this thread, click here for more Googly goodness.

:shocking:
