95 E320 transmission - reverse was fine, now feels odd

Need to tap into the wealth of transmission knowledge here in order to help diagnose my non 500E..

The high-mileage trans in my E320 wagon has developed a new upsetting problem; moving in reverse now feels "tight". The sensation can best be described as feeling similar to moving with a partly engaged e-brake. Reverse engages w/o delay, I can get it to move backwards without undo revs or any slippage but seems there is some binding once I let off the gas pedal. It's as if something that shouldn't be applied is getting applied simultaneously with whatever else is normal for reverse mode. Moving forward seems fine aside from somewhat delayed upshifts now and then. I've run across similar reverse complaints on other forums so it can't be too unusual, haven't found any explanations as of yet however. Has anybody ever run into something like this?

I picked up this car for cheap around 7 months back with the understanding that the trans was "done" or on borrowed time at best, up until now the only problem was the mentioned upshift issue.

I did find the transmission diagnosis thread here on the forum and will be going through the docs within, maybe I can make sense of the symptoms once I dig in.

Also, what does it mean when the trans has no numbers on it? The usual number pad location appears unmachined and "as cast" so it appears there never were numbers vs somebody having ground them off.

I can't help with the other questions, but if the numbers are missing, they must have been ground off very neatly. I'm not aware of any transmissions that left the factory without numbers. Even factory rebuilds have numbers stamped on them, along with a metal tag riveted to the housing somewhere.
