About a year ago I picked up a'94 E420 that needed some engine work. Towed it to my friends shop and worked out a trade-my labor helping him move several W140s,R129s and other stuff off of his ex's property for him fixing my Benz.

Well long story short, he literally went insane ,disappeared along with everything in his shop. I was left with my E420 missing engine trans wiring harness and gauge cluster. Towed that shell home. Later found out my "buddy" was in jail for terrorist threats , assaulting a police officer & mayhem. Deemed 5150,he's sitting in their rubber room awaiting trial.

I was ready to part out what was left but got a deal on a 93 500E engine and transmission. I have been researching on this site and other forums figuring what stuff I need to get. I figure since the car has no ASR that I will need a throttle body and MAF from a non ASR SL500 or W140 from 93 to 95. Will the EZL still in the E420 work? Will a W140 harness work ? Any other ASR stuff I need to give the heave-ho?

The shamen of the Stuttgart sports sedan here will hopefully impart their wisdom

Yikes - sorry to hear about your buddy. :o

The 500E engine will drop right into the E420. You need to use a non-ASR throttle body (ETA) from a late (94-95) W124 or W140. The MAF is the same. You'll also need a 5.0L LH module for the fuel injection, and 5.0L EZL for ignition, but that's about it (units from W140 or R129 will work, 1992 LH will get you a little extra power). Oh, you'll need an E420 upper engine harness (not a problem) and also lower engine harness (NLA... that's a problem).

Before installing the engine, pull the valve covers and lower oil pan, replace chain rails as needed, new OE/dealer valve cover gaskets, probably need to replace all the PCV tubing on the intake (supposed to be soft rubber, not fossilized plastic), new vacuum tubing going to the EZL/PCV and smog solenoids, yadda yadda. If possible I'd also replace the front crank seal unless it's absolutely bone dry in that area. And reseal the PS pump too. Uh, you'll need an E420 PS pump as well... the 500E has a tandem pump for SLS which you don't have.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the quick reply

Is lower harness 036 specific? 140 129 wont work?
The lower harness is different for each chassis, AND is also different between 124.034 / 124.036, AND they are not interchangeable. :(

Since the 124.034 harness is NLA, if it was removed from the car, you'll need to locate a used one and send it off to Blue Ridge MB for rebuilding (they are usually toast). Check with Jeff Wont (captruff) or David Hendy (dhendy) as they might possibly have a used 124.034 harness laying around. Best case, your buddy left the lower harness in the car and disconnected it from the original 4.2L engine.

You can get the 5.0 modules (LH/EZL) fairly cheap on eBay, otherwise I have them for sale but at a higher cost since I offer mine as fully tested & with an exchange warranty.

:apl:

just how different are the harnesses from s500 or sl500 compared to a 500e's ? Could they be made to fit? I assume they'd have to be from '92-'95 vehicles

Lowers will be totally different and probably not close enough to modify for use on a 124, and are probably not a late datecode anyway.

Not sure about the upper, you'll need to compare the chassis-side connectors.

ETA from a W140 with ASR will work fine, the cable is a bit longer. The R129, I'm not sure about the ETA cable length.
