5.0l swap and trans discussion

I have no idea what is going on there. Will try to figure out on Sunday. Got tied up at the shop, no time to work on projects while the weekdays…

Got it, thanks!

I actually thought that was the speedometer sensor.

I’ve been playing around with the Bowden cable — turns out my main goal is getting the proper second gear engagement.

As long as the engine can hold second gear at full throttle, I know I’m on the right track.

So far so good — today I replaced the first set of rear tires. This thing eats them fast! 😄

It’s time to enjoy this beast, I put so much time and love to this project

The odometer had some broken gears, so while I was in there fixing it, I couldn’t resist adding a couple cool looking features (white displays, chrome trims) 😎

Well… another day in paradise.

After getting the transmission and odometer issues sorted out, a new one showed up.

The engine still revs freely up to 6,500 RPM in both N and D, but ever since I fixed the odometer and rewrapped the instrument cluster wiring harness with new tape, the tachometer won’t go above 3,500–4,000 RPM. It’s as if the needle is hitting an invisible limiter.

I replaced tachometer (I had 1994 donor vehicle), same issue

What I did wrong?

Engine should NOT rev to redline in P/N... that likely indicates your NSS (gear position indicator) is not working properly.

Not sure what is going on if two tachs have the same issue, however in P/N, the engine is limited to ~4000rpm or so (I forget the exact rpm). How do you know it's revving to 6000+ when the tach stops climbing?

I can hear it, I can feel it.
Vehicle operating normally
There is no fuel cut off or something like that

I still hope for your advice

I'm not yet convinced the engine is revving to 6000 in P/N... it shouldn't do this.

Accelerate slowly in 1st gear with the shifter in "B" position. See if the tach stops at 4000rpm, while the engine continues to rev higher, and MPH also increases, while the tach remains frozen.

It does rev till 6000 a 100%
There is no fuel cut off or transmission related issues (at least known to me).
The tachometer won’t go above 3500-4000. I can film it later

That is really unusual. Especially if you tried another M119 tach and both do the same thing. Never heard of this before.

Here is the link:

It does the same while I’m driving
Oh that is WEIRD. Never seen that before. I'm guessing something in the gauge electronics failed. I'd see if there are any electrolytic capacitors that you might be able to swap out, but otherwise, I'd replace it with a good used M119 tach from a 400E/E420 cluster.
