BAT auction results - 1993 BMW M5, 14kmi (E34 chassis)

I think BMW enthusiasts are a bit more ardent than MB enthusiasts. But I'm with you Capt, for the life of me I can't understand why.

maw

Craziest thing about that whole deal is the BAT seller just purchased the car themselves 2 months ago from Carmax! At $68K I have to think they made an absolute killing and I can't imagine what the story was with the original owner other than some sort of scenario like this:

(Sorry audio clip only but you will get the point)

PS: Interesting piece of info, I'm pretty sure Nicholas Cage drove an E34 in that movie too. :slosh:

I was watching this BAT auction for a 14K miles BMW E34 M5 with much interest.

As a contemporary to the 500E500 these cars were often compared to each other. Having owned both cars I can tell you these are very different.

Admin edit: The M5 Sold for $68,000 on 3/22/2017.

Hi Jeff,

Given that you've owned both, would you care to compare/contrast the two wrt your observations on both the driving AND the ownership experience? Yes, I read that article that your car was featured in years back. :-)

The e34 M5 is on my "to do" list, but I secretly desire someone to tell me that it wasn't worth it and that the interior build quality sucked, so that I can cross it off my list and don't have to lament the 68K selling price!!! :-)

$68k? I thought that this was the 2017 going rate for a 189k mile 500E :)
I've never driven an E34 M5 but I do love the way they look. I own an E28 M5 and an E24 M635CSI, they're probably the most engaging cars that I own.

I think Glen should be able to talk about this. IIRC, this very topic (comparing the M5 to the E500E) has been discussed a couple of times here on the forum in the past.

I watch the sale and I thought it was very strong money. I was way off with my est. of $55K, my business partner owns two E34 M5s a 91 (270K) and a 93 (110K) and he estimated a high of $35K at the start of the auction. I think the low miles was key, remember this was the last hand build M car in the U.S.

I have an E39 M5, which is a generation newer. But I am familiar with the E34 and was present during the comparison of captruff's 500E and the red E34 M5. My thoughts are that the 500E is better built but the M5 is much more sporty.

I also owned e34 m5, great car, loved the stick shift but 500e is so much more comfortable and the torque is addicting... $68k however is WOW !!!! collectors material
