Becker 1432 glitchy sound

I had all of the components from my 2-amp 1992 becker 1432 system when I got my car and I decided to revert back to stock. I re-soldered the 4-pin plug to the headunit, and each amp had 4 wires cut where the speaker wire was spliced in. The wiring to the tuner seemed untouched, though I do no have a plug from the antenna there, it seems to go towards the front of the car for the modern headunit that was in there but I believe that is not important for the problem I'm having.

After connecting everything up as it seems like it had been left (sans wire from antenna signal to tuner) the radio makes a deep fuzzy farty "beep" when powering up and pressing buttons. It's getting signal from the CD changer, reading disks, reading tapes, antenna goes up and down, but it's silent unless you press a button and it glitchy beeps independent of the radio volume. It seems like the tuner is at fault here. I would believe bad amps would either not give any volume or give inconsistent volume, this seems like an issue between audio playing devices and the amps.

I agree, it isn't likely the amps. You might consider sending the components to Becker for a refurb.

Resident 1432 expert Super@Jlaa might have additional input.

:gsxrock:

Also on the face of the tuner where all of the plugs go there are 2 small plugs in the top right as mounted in the vehicle marked LV and RV, one is painted white. Those do not have any plugs going to them. On some photos I've seen there are supposed to be wires that go there.

I'm doing the same project with my 1432, but using components sourced from eBay, since the orginals were missing when I got the car... I'm at the point where I will probably call in the experts at Becker Autosound.

Regarding the 2 small plugs on the top right --- (the white one and the black one) - I don't have anything going in there either.

@mr.lovrak -

See this thread from 2014 where @Allgonquin had similar beeping:

Becker USA in NJ fixed the tuner module for him: Factory Stereo Upgrade for a 93 | In-Car Entertainment (ICE)

If you have have tuner module spares, you might try replacing the whole thing or replacing the individual cards inside the tuner module to see if that does anything: Or maybe there's some blown capacitors on the main board of the tuner module that you could replace.

Posting this again on this thread for the benefit of all. These guys are magicians when it comes to these E500E head units and amps repair:

They also add concealed bluetooth to the units. They also do early to mid 90s Porsche radios. I have used them succesfully for both Pcars and my .036. Smooth easy and reasonable pricing. Best to all.

@JAB12 when Becker USA first came out with their BT modifications for the 1432, their implementation required disabling of the cassette functionality / playing a “dummy” cassette while listening to BT. Has this changed, or did you have Becker USA modify a later Becker 1692 which has no such limitation?

You have the option of both. When I had my '98 C43 I had to source the period correct head unit which is the same as the later production E500s. on the C43 the BT worked with the dummy cassette. I bought an NOS BASF 120mins tape so as not to have frequent interruptions. I later sent that unit (and a spare) back to Becker for updating the BT with the newer technology which does not require usage of a cassette tape. It is ON all the time for pairing with your device using the FM source. That unit left with the C43 when I sold it and I kept the spare. I left the cassette tape functionality on my .036 as it just adds to the nostalgia and driving enjoyment to have to carry around a cassette tape. It's a matter of personal choice. If I get tired of it I'll just swap head units. I think running cost on this is $250 or so plus shipping both ways. Totally worth it.

Cool! Yes I know that the BE1692 (which could have been found on facelift 036s like your car and w202s like the C43) can now be updated by Becker USA to have BT without losing the cassette function…

…. but as far as I know the earlier BE 1432 MUST have the cassette function disabled by Becker USA to be modified for use with BT…..

Just wondering if you specifically know if this has changed with the earlier BE1432 bc that would be really cool!

BTW no facelift E500s / AMG 036s came with the earlier BE1432….

@Jlaa This is directly from their website: I am going to assume that yes as their tech has improved.

1991 - 1993 All MB
BE 1432 Head
Repair $185
Faceplate exchange $90
Bluetooth streaming mod available
All but 190E

This is a multipiece system. Please send in us all pieces for an analysis / repair

Interesting..... thanks! It would be good to know if they have figured out how to modify just the “BE1432 head” for BT without disabling the cassette... My suspicion is that to preserve the cassette one needs to modify the tuner module in the trunk ..... but maybe they have figured out how to do it just in the “head!”...would be good to hear from someone who had this done without cassette disablement...

If they have, then it would be reason to hoard 1432s! 🤩

Hello @Jlaa I inquired with Becker and this is their response:

We have an updated version Bluetooth which will give you full functionality .
Cassette audio and streaming

Sounds like they have updated their technology even for the older head units which is great for pre facelift 500E owners. My experience with them has only been positive.

That's good news then! No need to hoard MX3192s to run the BT audio through the CD changer inputs!

Now if Becker USA could only find a way for the headunit left/right buttons to control the phone BT forward/reverse that would be the bee's knees.....

Update:

Years of playing old Nintendo consoles has taught me that sometimes you just need to pull out the cartridge and blow out the connections. So I did that, I pulled out the receiver/tuner and removed the cartridges inside and made sure that everything was reseated and clean. When I installed it everything booted back up like nothin happened. That beats the $185 Becker is charging to repair a BE 1432 receiver, and now I have the factory matching radio in the dash. Thanks everyone!
