Brembo calipers noise

Hi guys,

I'm working on a '91 500E with the alloy Brembo calipers. The car has cracking noises under braking, after they get some heat into them. The rotors, pads, wheelbearings, balljoints (and various other arms) are new, but the cracking remains. You can feel it in the pedal and it's pretty loud. While breaking harder you feel it clicking/cracking in stages following brake pressure, and also releasing. The brake pistons move in okay and are not stuck, but I've read some stories about these alloy calipers... is this one of the known problems?

Thanks!

Steve

@Steve119,
Steve, I think I’ve seen threads here on the forum where these calipers have been upgraded to the 600SL ATE cast iron calipers. Same as are on my 93 500E. You can also upgrade to the Silver Arrow calipers but it’s pretty expensive.

Try the search function for more info. Use “caliper upgrade” or just “caliper”. You will pull up all kinds of threads.

There's a TSB for noises under braking... it's probably not related to the calipers. Verify the big LCA eccentric bolts are tightened to the new/higher torque spec, also verify the cross-brace bar between the rear LCA bushings has all 4 bolts fully tightened.
