Bring a Trailer (BaT) Auctions: Worth Listing Your Car or Not?

BaT Market Snapshot: May 2020

This Marrone Metallizzato 1969 Ferrari Dino 246 GT with Ferrari Classiche Certification sold for $390,000 on 5/13/20.
Hi Gsxr,

BaT continues to see strong auction traffic and big results this month across a range of vehicles. The 15 vehicles in the Spring Motoring Collection offered by BaT regular DriverSource were a highlight. With 1,229 vehicles listed in the past month, here are some interesting numbers on our recent activity:

Impeccable timing for a sale of an armored vehicle.. that also has electric shock door handles.

moring_level_b6_1590798379a2daeb57DSC03371-768x512.jpg

Amoring against 308 while still retaining window function is pretty cool.
Smoke screen is utterly pointless.

To me, this looks like a $99 wink, wink marketing listing for BaT, the seller and the armorer.

Do highly important people actually armor up G-wagens and use them for transport?

That sounds like the most ridiculously stupid idea ever. I can't think of a MORE conspicuous vehicle that screams "Shoot an RPG at me" than a murdered out, flat black wrapped G-wagen .... and of course TWO turbos on a V8 with MAX electronics all over the place to promote a MTBF of some critical system that can be measured in minutes ---- or conveniently whenever the next guy aims a Kornet ATGM at you.

This things feels like what a wanna-be-baddy-VIP would dream up as the ideal vehicle to ride around in.

In REALITY, I would bet that the best thing to armor up is some dead-simple bland looking thing with MINIMAL shit to break ... like a Chevy Surburban or a Toyo Land Cruiser.

I mean I love the idea of an 80s (The simpler era) G-wagen and I can appreciate how all those fake-it-until-you-make-it Hollywood types*** all roll around in modern G-wagens, but still ..... seems like the wrong vehicle to me.

***I met Jamie Foxx once at a gas station. We were both talking to the cashier about lotto tickets. He had pulled up in a G-wagen. :-)

Why do you think our government uses Suburbans as their primary protective and support vehicle?

Dan

Probably just a very nice coincidence for the seller given the timeline. The death of George Floyd took place on May 25. BaT lead time is what, 2 weeks from submission?

I'm sure this truck has a lot more eyeballs on it now though.

Dan
Yep, I see PLENTY of armored black US government SUVs (generally Suburbans) trolling around DC and Maryland. The number of them in a caravan denotes the importance of the person(s) being transported. See many of them driving into and out of Fort Meade, MD (NSA headquarters) which is not very far from my house.

Hemmings' auction site has been a total disaster IMO. Not user friendly. And the write-ups have the stink of a sweaty used-car salesman all over them.

^^^^^^
This.

I looked at Hemmings auction site a few weeks ago for the first time, and was stunned at how poorly it was executed. It seemed more like an "upscale" Craigslist, if there was such a thing.

And popup Hemmings ads with nearly every page load. It's bad.

Another quick rant about BaT.

Why aren't they pushing back against sellers who submit too few, out-of-focus and/or too dark photos.

Cases in point:

A really nice late 928.

30 photos of the car. Total. Most feature the scenery or the rear end of the car. C'mon, this is a desirable car with some massive $$$ spent of maintenance. Seller isn't new to BaT and should know better. So should BaT.

And then we have a W124 4matic with 50K miles. Sheesh.

Again, an experienced seller. Who appears to seek out the lowest light level possible for photos. I can't see a damn thing.

Hemmings transition from print was always kind of half-assed.
It was like they wanted to keep the print version as primary but the market said otherwise.
Barrett-Jackson also is going to try one next month.

You are right, the photos are terrible. I mean, useless exterior, semi-useless interior... but surprisingly good underneath? Someone spent a LOT of time detailing that undercarriage. New exhaust parts to me indicates there was major cancer on the old ones. Hmmm.

It is more typical here to see low mile cars with rotting exhaust systems. And high miler exhausts tend to be original and in great condition.

It's due to the exhaust getting up to temp more regular and boiling out all moisture that helps preserve them - something a low mileage car can lack.

For the G-Wagen fans, this is a treat. 4,900-mile Europa G500 Classic. They only made 500 of these in Almandine Black Metallic over a two-tone interior. Running at no reserve. Probably an easy $50,000 or more.

Nice truck. Too bad it's not one of the early 1990s M117 models. It would go for HUGE bucks. This one won't do badly though, as it will have strong appeal to odometer buyers. Note that even in 2000, they still had the old-school interior that basically didnt change from the 463 intro in 1990.

For some reason, I really expected this one to pull a bigger number.
Odo, color and condition.

Seller was very responsive and presented the car quite well. IMO.

Maybe it was the $70 dealer fee?

Dan

Given the presence of the new corporate overlords at BaT, this listing surprised me quite a bit. BaT uses the term "street legal" several times.

This car isn't Federalized.
It's not "street legal."
The manufacturer didn't import it for any purpose other than off road usage.

But the seller managed to snooker some poor sap at the DMV into issuing a New Mexico Title, and here we are.

Best of luck to the new owner. Hope the Feds don't find it. Or worse, hope they don't need to make a claim on their passenger car insurance policy.

USA-titled is not the same as street-legal.

Take the exhaust system off your 500E and it's no longer "street legal", despite being titled and registered.

:pc1:

Maybe it qualified as a “Kit Car”?

Definitely not a kit car.

Lotus cars in the US were on shakey ground from the beginning. Coming in on an exemption for many years. The 2 Eleven is a track day special. Imported whole, and not for use on US roads.

Their "Market Snapshot" for June was sent out this morning.

Interesting to note. 1,040 of 1,299 cars sold. Seems like people are buying cars - at least at the enthusiast and collector level.

We listed 1,299 vehicles in June with a sale rate of 80%. That number has held as our auction volume has grown in 2020

I've been casually watching the action at www.carsandbids.com

They've made a few improvements over the BaT original, but they're suffering from a very "troll-y" atmosphere. It's like they took the BaT peanut gallery and turned it up to 11. And then ripped the knob off. At least on a couple of auctions I have followed closely.

Today's results were dreadful. Nine auctions ended. 8 RNMs. And most of those weren't even in the ballpark.

I applaud them for eschewing the frat-boy-dealer vibe that has overwhelmed BaT of late, but they need results to survive.

I sort of wandered around in their site the other day for the first time. I wasn't impressed. And what's with one guy doing all the ad copy/critiques?

Dan

...

It's the Cult of Doug Demuro.

The guy who started out doing some marginally-interesting Youtube content, but then morphed into a corpo shill.

I'm not impressed. It's clearly a BaT wanna-be, and a poor one at that.

The Buyer's vig is 4.5% versus 5 at BaT. Not enough to move the needle, IMO.
The guy has 3.6M subs on youtube. Which absolutely boggles my mind.
I like the format of the main auction list page.
Autocheck report is included with every listing.
Bullet points are much more succinct than the BaT boilerplate BS.
"Doug's Take" is just asinine. Who cares?

IMO, the site is miles ahead of where the Hemmings offering stands. So that's not too bad. Plenty of room for improvement. And then they need to figure out how to lure in people with actual $$$ in their pockets.

I would agree, and these are things I noticed as well (in a positive light.) I don't know Doug from Adam, so his commentary really added nothing for me. The fact that the volume is lower is once, as you can look through the entire field of offerings in short order. I don't have time to wend my way through all the listings on any given day on BaT - it's such a time suck that I unsubscribed from the daily notifications.

No comparison to Hemmings. That place is a dumpster fire.

So it's not bad, just sort of a pre-pubescent BaT, maybe?

Dan

I don't think it's bad or good, yet. Just new.

Yesterday's results:

Ten auctions closed. Six sold, Four RNMs.

The average selling price was just under $12000. And if you toss the outlier on the high side, the average drops to just over $9000. So the site earned about $350 in fees and commissions on each auction they offered.

I did a bit more digging last night and found that SUV/4X4s really aren't doing well on the site. Which is exact opposite of everywhere else. It's probably the hottest sector, and has been for at least a year or two.

And based on the average price of the cars that are actually selling, it suggest that people are shopping the site for "used" cars. Not collector vehicles. That's clearly not sustainable. And I don't know how they break out of that mold, either.

Looks like a forum member has one of their cars in a Hemmings auction:

https://www.hemmings.com/auction/1991-mercedes-benz-560sec

Should be interesting to see how this goes, considering how W126 coupes do on BaT.

Dan
Ummm...yes.
