Cable for speedometer and oil pressure sensor.

Hello,
Looks like isolation around my cable for speedometer and oil pressure sensor is gone. It caused the speedometer and oil pressure to not work anymore.
Is this a common problem for the wiring on that car? Mechanic told me that there is no space to repair that cable without taking out the enginge, or at least it will be very hard job.
Have you faced the same problems?

These are 2 totally separate wiring harnesses.

The lower engine harness connects to the starter, alternator, and oil pressure/level senders. This harness uses biodegradable insulation which degrades / crumbles. This may be the cause of your oil pressure gauge not working. Very common problem. Look at the wires at the sensor, at the bottom of the oil filter housing. The harness is NLA, but Kurth sells a repair kit. You DO NOT need to remove the engine for this.

The speedometer wire harness goes through the side of the transmission tunnel. I've never heard of a problem with this harness. You need to do additional troubleshooting to figure out why the speedometer is not working.

Also, I'd look for a new mechanic...

So the connection for speedometer is not through the same cable as oil presseure which goes to the alternator?

Correct. They are completely separate.

The lower engine harness (to the oil pressure sensor) is discussed here. See post #15 for a photo.

The transmission harness connects to the neutral safety switch (NSS), speedometer speed sensor, and kickdown solenoid. Visually inspect the harness at the transmission, if it looks undamaged, the issue may be in your speedometer. Make sure the green wire is connected to the center of the speedometer.
