cladding glue-stripe alternative

Hey guys,

after seeing the MB-prices for the needed 9-10 meters of lower cladding glue-stripes (between the claddings and the body-parts) I am looking for a good alternative.

I am 99% sure I have seen this somewhere on here, but I can not find it.

I appreciate your help!

Yikes, $30 per meter? That's nuts. Price was almost the same 10 years ago. Possibly might be NLA anyway. 005-989-16-85 supercedes to 005-989-81-85-11.

Fruitbird forum post stated: "Some time ago I ordered some for a cladding upgrade to my early 124, and this is what arrived. It's just Scotch brand Pressure Sensitive Tape. I believe it's to be applied to the top of the cladding, just behind the chrome strips."

Looks like the new number might be more than 1 meter; this forum claims it's ~2.9M:

Dear love of the 124 series,
The adhesive tape which is factory-made on the sacco boards is on the roll of the friendly. As has already been mentioned here very often and correctly, the adhesive tape belongs logically to the doors and fenders. If it is glued to the sacco board, there is a certain amount of friction between the adhesive tape and the doors / fenders. The dirt in between rubs against the paint!
Last year I dismantled my sacco boards from my QP. Fortunately, there was only very little damage to the paintwork. The tape wasn't really tight either. Now I've rummaged around and found the number, I don't know where it was. From there to the friendly and ordered. Today I picked up 2 rolls; A 005 989 81 85 11. Each item costs 17.18 euros net + 19% VAT minus 10% club discount.
Since it doesn't say how many meters are on it, I measured. Roll 9 cm in diameter and 14 layers on it. According to Adam his giant, this makes about 2.8-2.9 meters / roll. One role is probably enough for one page in the QP. The width of the tape is 6 mm. The rolls are made in the USA and are "3M Ruban Adhesif Scotch Pressure Sensitive Tape". Is also transparent like the original which is glued on. When the temperatures are comfortable again I will put the tape on the fenders and doors. Then nothing rubs there either.
many Greetings
Marcel

I've used the 3M tape for replacing the damaged "chrome" strips on door sills of earlier models. Actually works well in that application, I'm not sure how well it would hold up to the elements, however. But - with the product being 3M, it's going to be good stuff.

I found this on the Island of Large Wimmen:

Thank you very much Dan and Dave!

Dan: I was talking about the assembly tape that keeps the cladding from rubbing on the doors and fenders.

Dave, I assumed the MB-price was per meter since it says "order in meters". 30 Euro per meter would be equal to roundabout 600 Euro for both of my cars!

Yes, the original MB-part is NLA but the W140 part is still available to my knowledge.

I will reach out to my dealership after the lockdown and ask if the price is indeed per meter.

Thank you very much for letting me know about the 3M! I will look for it and let you guys know if I find the 3M cheaper than the MB part.
I have to admit that I don´t read the "motor-talk" forum because it is full of false informations and "rubbish".

I bought some tape for this some time ago for my SEC it looks and feels like
the original stuff.
The writing on the inside of the reel is
Ruban Adhesif Scotch Nastro Adesivo Scotch Pressure Sensitive Tape Scotch Klebeband

I didn't even know this tape was avail from MB...

The original tape was cracked and had the adhesion was gone, so i first sanded all of the old tape off the cladding.

I used red 3M double sided tape, cut it length wise rather thin, say 3mm or so with an x-acto blade.. place this onto the cladding.

Leave the adhesive backing on the side of the tape that will adhere to the door except an inch that you can grab once the cladding is in place.
Place the cladding connectors into the door holes and slide the cladding into place, forward for the front door, backward for the rear door. If the backing were taken off it is very difficult to slide the cladding. Once in place, grab the one inch of backing and carefully unpeal the backing ...

I also tried a thin bead of dumb dumb tape, it also was too difficult to slide the cladding into place...

hope this helps...

I purchased the same tape, same part no. 005-989-81-85-11 back in July 11, 2019 for $30 after my discount from my local dealer. It appears the same as in the above photo. I have yet to use it like many parts I've stockpiled for future use.

You have to be very careful of this, to manage it correctly. As @JC220 as he suffers from an acute case.
Funny thing I was just reading this thread and I have the 3m tape in most all sizes on the shelf - great stuff :rugby: Clear double sided tape rolls are good to have to hand also for odd jobs. And Tesa goes without saying that's just a staple item for any MB restorer
