Cleaning 722.3 valve body - Good idea?

Hello gents,

is it still a good idea to remove valve body and do a full cleaning? I have no shifting problems but it is a 31 year old car. All that has been done is a couple of transmission fluid and filter changes.

This is one of those cases where "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Far too many things could go wrong here, especially if you've never done this before. If it's shifting well, don't mess with it.

If you really want to, first obtain a spare valvebody from a junkyard car and practice on the spare. I'd get one that is for the same transmission so you can test it when done and keep it as a spare after confirming it shifts properly when installed in the transmission.

What if I get an expert 722.3 shop to do the removal and cleaning?
Also, should I replace the vacuum modulator too?

That would be fine, but it may cost a FORTUNE. I bet it ends up around 6-8 hours labor, could be $1500-$2500. For that much you could get a complete rebuilt transmission from Sun Valley. This is really only a DIY exercise where your labor is free, otherwise the ROI doesn't make sense. ESPECIALLY if the transmission shifts properly right now.

Again, if the trans is shifting well, there's no need to replace the modulator, or anything else really. It wouldn't hurt, but then you need to adjust the new modulator by trial-and-error, which is time consuming.

I'm also playing the idea the get my transmission to vapour blasted and then to be resealed. Plan was also have all bolts and nuts to be yellow plated.

I'm worrying about that blasting media would be everywhere no matter how good you will try to seal the tranny before the blasting.. I don't know is it possible to clean tranny afterwards that there is absolutely zero blast media residuals left inside the transmission..

Here is very talented workshop who rebuilds and strengthen the transmissions. Mine has already strengthened like two decades ago. It will cost like 1k€ to have it rebuild.
