When you press defrost (far left), does fan speed go to MAX?

The middle 3 buttons just allow the fan & temp controls to function. Defrost sets fan speed on MAX and diverts air to the windshield. The "O" button on the right shuts off the fan.

Still not clear what you are expecting with the middle 3 buttons, that is not working right...

Put another way - the middle 3 buttons only change where the airflow comes out. What airflow is not correct?

Make sure to read the owner's manual description of the function. Air only comes out the floor vents when heating, with the center button pressed.

Cool air only comes out the floor vents in "Bi-Level" mode.

solid white arrow down should be pressed. The blue dial is correct for coldest setting on the A/C and the recirc button should be pressed and the RED light should be illuminated. That will get the highest amount of air recirculating in the dash vents. If that recirc light goes off, fresh air flap will open letting hot engine air into the cabin, SO if AC is your goal, do as I wrote for best AC experience you can get. Sadly, the fan is either full blast or barely working in my view - the Achilles of the car of the era IMO. Since I change from 124 e500 to 126 560 SEC, I have the same setup. Also note that after 20-30 minutes of continuous use, the recirc flap red light will turn off so keep an eye on that for longer travels, you may have to depress the button to keep the flap closed. (keep hot engine air aka "fresh" air from coming into the cabin.)
