CLK, SL, SLK, C43, E55 air bag question

Hello guys,

Decided to go with the E55/C43 type steering wheel. So now I am looking for airbag and I got a question regarding the emblem on airbag .

Best scenarios is chrome star on the airbag , does anybody know which cars were equipped with this type ? (cuz I do not know and it is kinda hard to find)

Second option SL 129, CLK 208 type , black emblem

Third option AMG one with embodied star

The worst option that I do not want is SLK type of airbag with the bluesh ugly emblem.

I will also consider buying one (BLACK) if anybody has it for sale ?

The SLK/CLK airbag with the chrome star was used in Europe/Asia (the picture you posted is from a EBay seller in Taiwan). To date, I have not seen one (with the chrome star) available in the US via EBay or wrecker.

Also, when selecting your airbag, you should verify its color by the color code next to the part number. Most of the SLK/CLK airbags (A170 parts) are charcoal, not black and many sellers will say its black when it really isn't. This is important if you plan on using the airbag with a black wheel. If your wheel leather is charcoal in color, then of course make sure your airbag is charcoal as well.

AMG airbags (in this design) are all black. They are difficult to find and you will end up paying a premium for them. Several on EBay for $375-400. Whereas the CLK airbags can be had for $100-150

This is a good choice assuming it is black. The 96-98 R129 airbags didn't have a charcoal option, just black and grey (A140 parts).

Thank you very much Rick:thankyou:and yes I remember your note from other post regarding color. It is also true that seller (idiots) claiming it is black even after you asking if it is BLACK or CHARCOAL when in fact it is charcoal !:banghead:

Yeap for the AMG letter you have to over pay around 300 bucks . I guess I will go with the black emblem then. However, will be dreaming to get the chrome one in my next life :lolol:

Do you know where can I get one (BLACK) besides ebay ?

You can use; http://car-part.com/ to search for the items you want and then open up a dialog with the seller. Sometimes it can be difficult to get people working at a wrecking yard to physically check an item for you. I get quite frustrated with the lack of customer service from most of these businesses. Its also rare that they will put in the effort to get you a part number or pictures.

The airbag with the chrome star you can find on ebay.co.uk but you might have issues with getting a seller to ship a airbag to you. Since a airbag is considered a"explosive device" they have to be shipped with special handling (basically you pay a lot more) and are normally not allowed on airplanes. I have had luck with some sellers who are willing to ship via "boat" and listing the item on the customs paperwork as "used steering part". The trick is finding a selling who is willing to 1. sell to the USA and 2. will work with you on the above mentioned issues.

Rik ,

I need your professional eye:oldster:

Is this is one charcoal ? or black ? stupid seller cant confirm if it is charcoal or black.

Roma....I went through this when I bought my airbag for my Brabus steering wheel. It's almost impossible to tell the true color from a picture, as Rik will confirm. I ended up buying the cheapest airbag I could find ($50 on ebay, it was tan) and dyed it black to match my wheel, and it came out great.

Have to agree with Andy. While it may look black in the picture, you have to verify with a part number and color code. This is especially important when the chassis line had black and charcoal as color options. On the R129 like mentioned, that bag is only available in black, I wouldn't bother with a CLK/SLK bag unless you can verify the color.

Also, make sure you get the horn buttons and that the horn buttons work (are not broken). The buttons, springs and electronic contact switch are not available separate, so if any of the parts do not function, you basically have to get another airbag.

Thanx guys,

:hornets: thats what I thought , i guess i ll have to go with the amg then :spend::5150:

By the way , today fedex delivered my new steering wheel, looks really good without any marks on it

It also smells strong with ladies make up and french perfume, seems that beautiful lady held this steering wheel for a while :scratchchin:

P.S. How did you dye it ? Did you do it yourself ? I ve no idea how to do that

I just googled images for charcoal interior and now I am totally confused. It seems that I am not able to distinguish colors , lol.

I am not even sure if my steering wheel is black ...

It says "antrazit" , so does it mean it is black ? or ?

Same story here again Roma, my wheel was probably anthracite, not black, but it was even difficult to tell in person, soooo....I just dyed the steering wheel at the same time as I dyed the airbag. I used a product called Surflex vinyl and leather dye, very simple process, instructions come with the Surflex. If I can do it, believe you can too! Go for it, you will be happy with the outcome...

My God, I feel I am in trouble here , lol . Your steering wheel looks suuuper cool, I am sure it is big pleasure to hold it every time you drive a car .

I hope I can make it , at least I will try it . For some reason I could not find Surflex product on ebay . This is the place where I found it

http://www.colorplus.com/products-p...xible-surface-colorant-for-leather-and-vinyl/

Where did you get yours ? it is $62 not cheap at all I hope it works good.

P.S. Why is hell the Mercedes made 3 almost the same color Blac , ANtrazit and Charcoal ? :shocking:

I actually matched with my current steering wheel and color looks the same, I suppose black color :hornets:

Sounds like your wheel is anthracite, which more or less is charcoal, not black. Your in a pickle at this point, as you need to take your wheel to a wrecker (that actually has airbags) and compare it to the colors of the airbags. You should be able to figure it out at that point and determine exactly what color you need.

If it was a black airbag, this R129 airbag is black and is the best looking of the bunch (except for maybe the AMG airbag)

So here is an actual steering wheel .

It looks solid black to me .... So you are saying that an AMG airbag will not work with my steering wheel ? I actually almost settle the deal for a black AMG airbag of C43 .

The problem here is that in MN people barely see Mercedes on the streets so trying to find an airbag in stock would be super hard , lol

Is there anyway I can find out color using those number on steering wheel and airbag ?

Never said the AMG airbag won't work, was just giving you alternative that was 3x cheaper.

The original wheel in your 500e is black, so compare this new wheel to the one in your car, if the colors match up, then your new wheel is black. That's a simple way to go about it. Then you go back and focus on finding a black airbag.

I meant color-wise

I will still try local yards and then probably will just go what I ve already found on ebay.

Anyway thank you for help such a simple thing but so many confusion :thankyou:

If the airbag wont work for some reason I will dye it then :D

All the CLK/SLK type AMG airbags are black. If your wheel is charcoal/anthracite, you will have a color mis-match. Much depends upon how picky you are about the colors matching.

As seen in the picture, the AMG wheel is black and the CLK airbag is charcoal. That should give you an idea of the color variance.

Looks great Roma....from the pics the bag matches the wheel perfectly. Take some pics after you mount it.

Thanx , I like it too .
I will install the wheel hopefully tmrw after alignment (cross the fingers) cuz today we were working on the full rebuild on the front suspension all rubber mounts, bushings, joints and links .

I actually decided to go with the SLK/CLK type steering rather than C43 type cuz this style (IMHO) fits better our classy 036 . It is sport steering wheel but it is not too much sport with those reliefs like on C43 type though I like them. The SLK/CLK is closest to the style of OEM sportline.

The reason I go with this airbag cuz it does have embodied MB star which is like OEM sportline and others W124 steering wheel airbags. The R129 is the same but there was no R129 close to me and I wanted to get ASAP and match color in person . So I drove today 85 miles each way and get this AMG air bag which is actually pretty rare.

I still have C43 wheel if anybody wants it and my OEM sportline wheel. If anybody is interested in these, make me an offer for C43 one and can get my sportline+airabg for 100 + shipping.

Pics of installed wheel are coming .....

I saw this steering wheel made for a 500E a few years ago by DCT Motorsports and the wheel looks quite good. Been meaning to get in touch with them and see if they still offer this type of conversion.

Looks great , especially that is been made for sportline type airbag. Most of the wheels like that are for the regular airbag (Taiwanese stuff).
However it looks too sporty and those reliefs make me feel that wheel is massive/huge. Still will fit your car style/spirit with those HRE wheels.

You have to send in your own wheel and DCT Motorsports will convert it to any style you want, $ talks. So this way, they get your air bag as well to match the color and design exactly. The wheel's overall diameter is retained and the thickness can be build inwards. The design is more sportier but it feels quite good. I was in a 911 that had a steering wheel just like that and it felt sooooo good that I had to have one in the future. This just might be my own Xmas gift this year. I can even provide my own leather selection, which I might do.

Hmmm, selling the OE steering wheel..?? I would never sell the steering wheel which came with the car. Keep it for a potential new owner, that may be more worth than 100 bucks.

I hope potential new owner will be my son :rugby:

Otherwise you are right but I have two sportline steering wheels so no worries my 500E will have original wheel in garage. I just have two many steering wheels so willing to share some with the board. Why would they collect dust if somebody could have a good use of them.

:update:

Decided to go with the C43/E55 steering and SUPER happy with that :woot:

Got a steering wheel off C43 with 27K miles for $50 without ANY marks on it and spotless white top :woot:

I was planning to dye upper part with grey to much the interior but white top matches fine with the bottom greyish part of the dash board.
