The swing-axle rear suspension really is pretty excellent, particularly when used with the hydraulic compensator above the rear axle, rather than the "pedestrian" spring used on many cars.
When combined with air-ride suspension, it's like a magic carpet ride. And the handling really is excellent, as well.
The full hydropneumatic suspension as used in the 450SEL 6.9 (and later, in Euro 126 sedans) really was a step down from the air suspension as used in the 112/109s.
The only problem with swing-axle suspension, is what happens when you push it well beyond its limits. But we won't talk about that.
