Deleting middle muffler

The cats have already been removed and replaced with straight pipes but my middle muffler needs to be replaced as well. I was thinking of just deleting it and having a y pipe fabricated going into the rear muffler. Has anyone done this? I’m mostly worried about hearing a drone inside the car and wouldn’t really prefer a louder exhaust. I realize this muffler acts as a resonator but It doesn’t seem to be worth $500 plus installation to me. Also, a performance resonator probably wouldn’t be much different than straight pipes since they are so unrestricted.

If you delete BOTH the catalysts AND middle muffler (resonator) with straight pipes... there will be a low-RPM resonance that I found unacceptable. It's not louder, it's not better. The resonator is NLA anyway, so you'd need to install some aftermarket item in the same place. Note the factory resonator is a straight-through design with perforated tubing inside.

So any aftermarket performance resonator would eliminate the drone?

Probably, yes. But you won't know for sure until you install something. I found that either the cats, OR the resonator, can be deleted without drone... but both caused a problem. It was more of an obnoxious rattle at low RPM under acceleration, not so much an issue when cruising.

I had a Magnaflow muffler for a Camero fabricated to fit into the resonator spot. It bolts up and hangs into the stock Mercedes fittings.
I had the fabricator cut the resonator pipes off and fit them on to the Camero muffler.

Note my Camero muffler is straight thru model. I believe that Magnaflow now has one with an internal X crossover which would be even better.

The flanges and the silver painted pipe are from the 500E resonator.

Also, I still have stock CATs

Do you still have the stock rear muffler?

I used a similar version Terry when I had front to back headers/dual exhaust installed on my C126. We eliminated the CAT and the resonator and had a bad drone thru gears 1-2-3. So much that the inner gear head was happy, but wifey never rode in the car. After a month, I had a shorty magnaflow 2 in 2 out put in the space under the floor pan where the resonator was and that cured it.

Well, I have enjoyed having, what my family refers to as, the LOUD car.
There is nothing quite like an un muffled M119! No cats or resonator.

There is a drone sound that would, over time, be too much to bear between 40-60mph., however, the sound mostly disappears around 70mph.
For some reason, I love the sound. Can't explain why. Puts a smile on my face every time I start it, or accelerate!

However, if you can't cruize around the 70mph. mark, the drone will eventually be too much.

Am I the only one cringing seeing that muffler on the trunk of the 036

@Joncf - I may have the resonator and rear muffler available soon. I was not going to install @5thscaleracer system on my 036 as I played with the idea of a sale but even if I did, it would be a shame not to have experienced it on the car even if it was for a short stint...

Do you still have the stock rear muffler?

NO, I have a RennTech Back Box. I replaced my Time Valve Y-Pipe with the Camero muffler to cut down the noise and resonance in the cabin.

Which it did.
