Desperately Seeking Assistance - Rear Glass

Folks, am desperately trying to source rear glass for my '92 500E. The car was taken apart for a bare metal, glass-out repaint, and the new rear glass we received was badly damaged on arrival.

ANY assistance would be beyond greatly appreciated...my paint guy is stuck with my car in his booth until we can get this resolved and, equally as importantly, I cannot wait to drive it again.

Many thanks!
Bob

P.S. Gerry, sorry for posting in two different forums ("Want to Buy," too) but am beside myself right now. Feel free to remedy as you see fit. Thx!

P.P.S. Am overseas until the 23rd with a massive time difference, so apologies for any delay responding.

Worst case, can you install the original rear glass temporarily...? I've heard it can be very difficult to obtain new glass right now. Also try to contact the OEM (Pilkington?) to see what availability is like for the aftermarket version of the fine-wire glass.

:runexe:

Hi, Dave, and thanks again for your assistance. The old glass was severely delaminated -- I think it's still around and that is an option, though one I'd like to avoid. Will reach out to Pilkington and see if they were the supplier/what they had. I contacted MB Classic but have yet to hear back.
Again, thank you!

The car is in the Tampa area right now, Jeff.
Not sure why the Japanese flag is still under my profile pic...am back in the US.
Thx!
Bob

Update...
My paint guy is amazing. He went to a salvage yard and found rear glass that -- while not perfect -- fit. He took the old one with him, had a bunch of measurements, and for a couple hundred bucks or so got a stop-gap measure.
The downside? Not new and the defroster is more visible/not layered in between the sheets of glass like my old one. However, for now, this works.
We are still trying to get a new replacement rear window via MB Classic...they sent an email saying such pieces are Will Call only unless dealer ordered along with a shipping case. Going through the local MB dealer to try to get it done, though I have no idea if they're a part of this CDK cyber issue or not.
Lastly, to Dave's point, my old rear glass was Sigla, while the broken replacement was Pilkington.
Regardless of all of this, if anyone has a pre-facelift rear window, I am definitely interested.
Thanks to all for your assistance!
Bob
Pix below are (in order, I hope):
  1. Stop-gap rear window
  2. Original rear window - Sigla
  3. Broken on arrival replacement window - Pilkington
  4. Stop-gap rear window dry fit

Bob see this thread, post 112.

I had no issue in 23 getting new back glass except for my severely discounted price could not be drop shipped due to vendor change following a nla status for several months.

OK I just looked up a new rear window 124 670 10 80 and Install kit 124 670 01 93 and both are NLA at Merc in US and Germany. Any suggestions as to where I might be able to find a set? This is for my 1992 500e. thanks in advance

Where did you look this up? Rear glass 1246701080 shows as "available" on the MB Classic website. (The install kit 1246700193 does show NLA.)

If you haven't called a dealership (or, MB Classic Center in SoCal) you need to talk to a live person. You cannot confirm availability ANYWHERE online with 100% certainty.

Frenchplane, I happen to have the install kit (124 670 01 93 14) which I'll be glad to send you. I bought it maybe 2 years ago for a glass job. FYI the glass shop I used preferred to use their own urethane product. This shop does all the glass work for our local MB/BMW/Mini/Honda dealer.
How about $25 plus shipping. I live in Albany, NY. The cardboard box has been opened but the products not touched. The instruction booklet still attached to the box.
PM if interested.

Regards,

Peter Weissman

My dealer parts guy today said the glass shows as NLA.

Classic reports NLA as of 23 Sept 2024 per Jon Siggson.

For what it's worth, the rear glass on my 92 500E was de-laminated about 2 -4 mm on both the driver and passenger side due I believe to corrosion of the restive heating element sandwiched between the glass panes. Only one or two of the elements warmed up when turned on. Seeing this I decided to try Deoxit on both the inside and outside. Much to my surprise, it appears to have made a visible improvement and the de-laminated width is now ~ 1 - 2mm. It has been too warm to see if the element heat up and defog but cooler days are coming and I'll check and report back.

All the best,

Joe

I had the local dealer install the proper .036 glass about 14 months ago IIRC. Many local catalogues may show NLA but it is because of the supplier changes and just do not update their systems for inventory regarding Glass.

The glass showed up in my quick pick as well. I have a call into merc classic to see if it’s true. As for dealers I have a friend who checks globally and all NLA

Did you ask your friend to check the specific "NLA" code in Paragon? There are different codes with different meanings.

Next step is to check if the Pilkington aftermarket glass is available or not, details from this link pasted below:

"I spoke with a local independent glass shop which is also a Pilkington retailer. Supposedly the laminated glass is Pilkington part number 3211 and it is available [as of May 2024], there were four in my regional warehouse. Price was $325 retail."
