One of the few shortcomings of the pre-facelift models is the lack of a cabin air filter. A French company "JR Filter" used to make an aftermarket snap-in filter, but those have been out of production for over ten years now.
The challenge is finding a suitable filter media that's flexible yet will stay in place when cut to fit over the fresh air intake grills. I found this Honeywell product which is technically a "pre-filter" material, but is still better than no filter at all. I folded it over twice, cut it to size with some trial and error, and left some extra material at the top and inner edges so I could affix metal clips between the filter and plastic lip of the air intake surround. The metal clip is MB part number 124-988-06-78.
So far there's no noticeable effect on blower airflow with the filter installed. When I replace it in a few months, I'll make a more precise fitting version. Here's what it looks like for now:
