All,

Yesterday, Matthew James, who is the owner/proprietor of Klima Design Works, stopped by my house for a two-hour visit. Klima is located about 40 minutes from me, here in Maryland. I have some REALLY good news to report.

Klima is making high-quality diaphragm kits for the W123 models, and these are also compatible with the 126 and 124 models. They are making BOTH sizes of diaphragms -- the large ones and the smaller ones. See the photos below. I have several sets of these diaphragms sitting here on my desk.

But MORE importantly, they are also now making the internal assemblies for the two-stage pods. These are exact copies of the factory design, with internal spring and diaphragms pre-installed. You just have to carefully open the pod, and drop in the dual-stage setup. AMAZING.

But there is even MORE good news. Klima is in the final stages of prototyping full pods. Right now these are for the 123/126, but may extend to the 124 in the future as well. Here are photos of the pod housings. It is an improved design that combines the two halves of the pod with screws, rather than breakable clips. The pod housings are done with nylon, and are 3D printed.

But wait .... one last thing: for 126 owners, Klima is also making the monovalve housings that eliminate the pesky and NLA Bosch monovalve insert, and employ an improved design that uses a modern electric motor. As you can see from the photo below, duo-valve systems (for Yurro 126 models with dual-zone climate control) are also available.

Single-zone heater valve (monovalve) housing (typical for US 126 models with ACC):

For you 123, 201, 124 and 126 nerds, who love to geek out ... there is even ONE MORE THING for you. Let me ask you this -- do you know what the MB part number is for the MALE connector that goes into pin bushing housings? Not the female piece -- these are well documented. I'm talking about the MALE piece that slides into these female aluminum pin bushings (see below photo for the FEMALE pin bushing). These FEMALE units are MB part number 002 545 99 26.

@Klink? @gsxr? @jhodg5ck?

Nope, I didn't think you'd know the part number for it. It's not documented anywhere in MB parts catalogs ... or if it is, it is very esoterically located. I've never seen it....

Well, Klima is also making and selling these pins that make up the connectors. They're exceedingly high quality, made out of nickel. Here's what they look like.

Klima has an amazing array of interesting stuff. Their web site is Klima Design Works – Climate Control Upgrades for Vintage Mercedes

Good work honch! Also, I would buy a complete rebuild set for both chassis just to be be plug and play. I know you have removed and rebuilt the W124, I have done a complete w126 rebuild as has our Mandolorean friend; Roy. If someone here has to replace an evaporator or a heater core, it is incremental work to replace all of your vacuum pods too as it is much easier without a dash (not required to remove 126 dash for vac pod R/R but really makes it easier) When I bought my rebuild W126 R134 conversion they were out of the units required but it looks like they are in stock again. It is nice to support an enthusiast site who makes quality parts for the community at a fair price.

You can buy the diaphragms from Matthew right now, and I believe also the complete assemblies for the dual-stage pods. It is not possible to replace one of the diaphragms in a two-stage pod. Now you can just drop in a new assembly, complete (or potentially buy the complete pod). We compared my 124 pod set to a 126 dual-stage pod I had laying around, to Matthew's pods. We know the diaphragms work in all three. I believe the internal assemblies (dual stage) will also work across all three chassis' pods as well, but this is not 100% confirmed for sure.

These diaphragms are better than the George Murphy diaphragms, and Matthew confirmed what The @gsxr has said about the Murphy pods not being appropriate for some situations. Now a drop-in solution exists. It appears that 123 and 126 pods are identical externally, and also identical with some 124 pods, the difference being the metal "arm" for the 124 (which is flat metal) and the arm for the 126, which is sort of like bent coat-hanger wire (round metal rod, formed/bent).

I ordered a Klimakit from Matthew last week for my 1987 300SDL. I'll be in your neck of the woods for the Military Bowl Weds (Roll Wave!!). It should be waiting for me when I get back. Will post on the 126 board how it goes. Again, thanks Gerry for the lead. MUCH appreciated!

This looks interesting.

The eBay listing does not inspire confidence. This seller does not seem to know which chassis use which pods/diaphragms. They probably cannot tell you which specific pods/diaphragms are needed for a given 124 chassis (the pods vary by model year). Appears they may be more knowledgeable with the older 1980's-vintage chassis (107, 123, 126) which are slightly different animals vs the 124/201.

Note the above listing would be equivalent to the Performance Analysis ACD-2010 diaphragms, which were available for $9.50 each (plus S&H) as of a few years ago. Not sure about current pricing / availability from PA, but the website implies possibly $10.50 each now:

It will be interesting to see what repair solution KDW offers for the dual-chamber pods. These dual-chamber pods used on the 124 for the defroster flap, and the main air / recirculation flap. The PA ACD-2020 kits do not work well, as documented previously on this forum and others.

:apl:

Would you get one of the kits for the W124's ?

or just order a la carte (you'll need to know the depth of the diaphragms you need):

Deep Type (For 33mm height Cup) and Shallow Type (28mm height cup) available. Measure the lower “cup” portion of your actuator housing as shown in the picture.

So glad I kept all of my old pods, especially the defrost ones . . .

How did things end up with this, @Kip ? I hope all is well! We need to connect sometime soon.
