Electric car impact on fuel availabilty and pricing in future(?)

Enel X, makers of the Juicebox brand "EV chargers", is shutting down North American ops effective immediately.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Statement of Enel X Way USA, LLC

After careful consideration, Enel X Way North America has decided to close its electric mobility business in the US and Canada, operated by the local subsidiary of Enel X Way USA, effective October 11, 2024. An experienced third-party firm will be appointed to manage the company’s affairs and ensure that the closure is handled with the utmost care and professionalism. The appointed firm will be responsible for managing the remaining obligations and communicating directly with customers and partners regarding the closure.

This decision is in line with the Enel Group’s strategic approach to e-mobility that pursues further growth by providing bundled offers, including private charging solutions, to its electricity customers as well as by developing public charging infrastructure in countries where it has an electricity retail business. By contrast, Enel North America has no retail electricity customer base and was active in the e-mobility segment only through the sale of charging hardware and software.

Additionally, the dynamics of the EV market in the US have changed quite a lot in the last year and, like many other companies, Enel X Way North America has been impacted by high interest rates which have increased the cost of scaling the charging infrastructure business in a framework of sustained uncertainty where EV sales growth expectations have not been met.

Enel X Way North America understands that its decision has implications for those who had chosen its charging solutions.

Inquiries regarding any outstanding matters, including customer accounts, orders, or obligations, can be directed in the coming days to the claims information page (available soon).

North America remains a core geography for the Enel Group, where it will continue to focus investments in utility-scale renewables and demand response.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Residential charging hardware (JuiceBox) will maintain the physical operating ability to charge vehicles.
  • All Enel X Way software will be discontinued. Commercial charging stations will lose functionality in the absence of software continuity.
  • The Enel X Way App and all other Enel e-mobility apps in North America will be discontinued and removed from the App Store.
  • Enel X Way customer support is no longer available, effective immediately. Any Enel X Way related questions and claims should be directed in the coming days to the claims information page (available soon).
  • The decision to close Enel X Way USA, LLC and related impacts do not apply to Enel X Way customers in other countries outside of the U.S. and Canada.

Enel X had acquired EMotorWorks in 2017. That company had its origins from a Kickstarter campaign back in 2013. They were a significant player in the charger market.
Commercial properties that have their JuicePumps are totally screwed. They have dead hardware. Totally dead.
Consumers now have dumb charge controllers lacking the ability to charge when tariffs may be low, off-hours.

@gsxr,
Who Cares, Hopefully Mercedes puts off EVs until the next century. They need to stick with traditional ICE or maybe go Toyota’s route with highbreds.

BUT the next two articles on the new Corvette were IMOP Great! New Vette has 1064HP/838#TQ. It should be a screamer. No price yet but I’m sure it will get your attention.:)

Some interesting bits in there, like the output is over 200bhp/liter, and it uses 0W-20 oil. And that MB is backing off their previous fantasy to go all-electric by 2030.

OTOH, that "video" could have been a podcast. There was near zero visual content. I could have read the transcript faster than listening at even 1.75x speed. Why do these so-called "creators" churn out content in a format that is slow to consume and offers nothing that couldn't be had in print? </rant>

Interesting review of a Chinese made midsize truck sold in Mexico. that utilizes a small 1.5liter motor to power 2 electric motors producing around 450hp and giving it a 560 mile range. Price range is around $45k which is inline with the regular Tacoma.

Seems like a pretty solid vehicle.

BYD (which stands for "Build Your Dreams") is a pretty interesting Chinese company. One of a very few EV companies that are actually profitable. They only build EV and plug-in hybrid vehicles. I'm sure the US is going to tariff the crap out of their cars.

They are offering a Camry-size equivalent right now for $14K and change, with a 1,200-mile range on a full tank of gas + full electric charge. The entry Camry is at $25K, so that tells you how much they are undercutting Yota.

There's already a 100% tax on Chinese EVs. I'm not sure how much it's going to help in a global market. The Germans are already making noise about the EU putting up similar barriers given how important the Chinese market is to them.

Cybertrunk prices slashed $20k! You can't afford to NOT buy one!

AWD version: Price slashed to $79,990, down from $99,990, for the Cybertruck AWD with a dual motor. EPA estimated range is 325 miles.
Cyberbeast: Price cut to $99,990, down from $119,990, on Tesla’s high-end, high-performance CT. This has a tri-motor and an EPA estimated range of 301 miles and comes with a “premium” interior, among other extras.

Generally, when people opt for something I would not choose, I chalk it up to personal preference. Different strokes for different folks.

But I just can't understand how anyone would look at the Cybertruck and think "I want that". Other electric cars, maybe not my choice but if someone else gets one, I assume they had good reasons to do so that were valid for themselves. But the Cybertruck, I'd sooner walk around wearing a raw whole chicken as a hat than have one of those.

I'd be willing to bet that if Elon Musk was a committed Democrat, that a lot (more) of the "green" (eco-conscious) people would be vrooming around in their new, bullet-proof Tesla CyberTrucks.....

Tesla sales rates slowed significantly once Musk took over Twitter and then started coming out for free speech, and even moreso when he started supporting Trump.

Tesla's product reveal a week or so ago seemed to have been a bit of a nothing burger. True autonomous self driving is still very far away and they keep kicking the can down the road. Just seems like they've run out of ideas trying to build cool new products but unfortunately we live in a "shiny new thing" world and focus is on what's going to get more clicks. Ugh...

That truck is the ugliest vehicle I’ve seen in a long time. There all over the place here in SoCal. With all of the flat slab panels. To me it looks like the cheapest way Tesla could build it,

This is just my opinion. Others may like it.
i saw a rendering of it as a smaller, 2 door car and it looks so much better! the vehicle is more of a statement piece... i guess

its purely a recreation toy for most and dont give musicians anymore ideas about wearing meat plz

I’d be more impressed if the glass was bulletproof. Most shooters would aim for your head. :) :sniper:

The media lied to us? NO WAY! According to this article, EV sales are still increasing. Add grains of salt as needed.

:watchdrama:

EV sales have not fallen, cooled, slowed or slumped. Stop lying in headlines.

every normal person i know that bought a Tesla in the last 3 years is pissed rn... they missed the incentives and a model 3's fs now are below 20k...

The revenge of German beancounters:

"The company will be looking to reduce its cost base, including materials used for its cars, material used in factories and labor costs, Wilhelm (MB CFO)said during a call with reporters."

I believe this is what led to the inherently "cheap" feel of the W210 and Porsche 996, among others.

Beancounters have been in charge of Benz and most companies forever. Just look at how the S Class has gone from the hewn from granite feel of a W116 and W126 to the plastic crap filled with LED'S. Nothing new I'm afraid but if they are really going to join the race to the bottom oh boy what a shame.

Up to and including the W124, MB was in the business of making cars. After the W124, MB has been in the business of selling cars. Before it was about making great cars, and the customers will come and stay with the brand.

Then it became about profit per car. The customer MB wants buys or leases a new MB every three years. You don't spend extra money building something to last 40 years if the person that is willing to give you money only cares about the first three.

Unfortunately, I don't think a company can survive anymore if it is focused on making cars (unless it is just a boutique manufacturer). Note that I don't like this view, but I think that's the way it is now. Businesses have become "better", which means better at making money, not better at making a product.

I agree with you on all these points if we are only refering to MB.

But other brands, such as Ferrari, Bentley, Aston Martin, Bugatti, Koenigsegg, and Porsche ( I may forgot other good brands ) do still making cars while meeting the right price for right customer base that have this reliability and longevity. Mercedes was once doing so but not anymore.

Nothing to see here. Please disperse.

In my neck of the woods, we're overrun with hyperscale data centers. Nobody has any realistic idea how to power all of the ones that have been built and approved to be built. There are a couple hundred in my county currently, and each one can consume up to 500,000 homes worth of electricity and 10,000 homes worth of water.

"Industry leaders" held a forum earlier this week to get everyone accustomed to the concept of local nuclear plants and battery storage facilities.
But due to the density of the county, these developments won't be in isolated areas. Nope, they gotta go where people live and children go to school. No word whether the "industry leaders" will be willing to put up with such developments near their homes and childrens' schools.

executives must be kicking themselves for having to follow govt mandates... 44 minutes to charge, can use as a backup generator for 3 days if you dont have to escape to somewhere, and you lose 2/3's of range by towing...

bananas...

at least you get an 8 year warranty for the battery that will lose its capacity to charge pushing all this weight

Saw my first Tesla Cybertrunk in the Wild this afternoon. My wife first spotted it as we entered the highway on-ramp. “Look! What’s that?”

“Ooh! It’s one of those alien transporters I heard of the other day…see if you can catch up with it. I hope it comes in peace”.

To me, It’s kinda butt fugly, appears uncomfortable & lacking in truck features (i.e. no trips to the lumberyard).

Jersey plates. Probably purchased for the bullet proofity

Cybertruck is famous for all the wrong reasons across the pond to here in Europe.

I saw a Jerryrigeverything episode the other day where Zack’s sponsor asked him to not be included in any Cybertruck content. Hilarious.

Wonder if that is that paint or a wrap. First I've seen one that isn't naked.

:peep:

Regarding the very noticeable color…Wife made an interesting comment that perhaps someone is being paid to drive it around as a means of introduction to the masses. It certainly captured attention as it was heading West

Heck, I didn’t really know about the Cybertrunk as a reality until post #1418

We’ve got them in all colors here in SoCal BUT there still BUTT UUUGLY. Paint or Wrap don’t make them any better. I’ve seen Lime Green, Yellow, Red, Black ect; Nothing Helps.

I predict a short run on manufacturing unless it gets more conventional body makeover.
