Hi guys
I sent my ETA for rebuilt and looking at my 2 spares . Should the ETA snap back closed or should it close without snapping ( more controled )?
The 05 built one does not snap when closed . It does close but more controled if that makes sense
From memory the plate should snap back when the linkage is opened & released (either on the car, or removed from the car). If the plate does a "soft close", something isn't right. I don't know if cleaning & lubrication will fix this, or if it indicates a worn part that requires replacement. You could try contacting one of the few places that rebuild these but I expect all of them will not give you useful information, but rather try to get you to send it in for a full "rebuild".
Edit: Also try rapidly opening / closing the throttle plate. If it initially snaps closed but then after a dozen or two open/close cycles the plate starts to not snap closed, but instead "soft close", that also isn't normal.
I have a spare ETA with ASR on the shelf. IIRC it was rebuilt by Don Roden before he retired. Let me see what it does. You’re talking about completely coming off the throttle and letting the spring between the ETA and underside of the intake plenum pull it closed?
EDIT: On further consideration it might not help much because there would be no electrical connection that might dampen the butterfly during closing. I’ll look anyway.
Before you open it up, could it be the butterfly rubbing against the cylinder wall? Maybe just that needs a cleaning with brake parts cleaner (the good stuff) and a Scotch-Brite pad.
