Here is some comparison between the "old" aluminum and "new" plastic flat hood badge. These are from my GVZ parts stock.
Note that the aluminum badge is one of about 3-4 that I have that is very very faded.
I also have a stash of about 3 of the plastic ones.
Note on the first photo of the plastic badge, the "raised" area right above the word "BENZ" that corresponds with the underlying pin. As I mentioned, these plastic badges don't quite fit the C126, and when you try to insert the pin into the C126/R107 hood, and push the plastic badge down flush with the surface of the hood to mount it, it puts stress on this pin as its slightly incorrect pin placement provides resistance. And you get this "bulging" of the pin area on the surface of the plastic badge.
Also, notice that the plastic badges have two, even-length pins on the reverse [back] side of the badge.
The aluminum badges come with two, un-even lengths on the reverse side of the badge, as shown in the photo.
The aluminum badges are a direct/correct fit on the bonnet of the C126/R107.
Also note the profile photos the "raised" tri-star area of the plastic badge, whereas the surface of the aluminum badge is flush (although with raised lettering and slightly raised star, but overall everything is raised to one "flush" level.
The last photo is a photo of the plastic hood grommet.
Sorry for the quality of the photos. Just quick and dirty this morning trying to provide some contrast.
No matter what any EPC or repair instructions say, GET THE ALUMINUM BADGE FOR ALL C126 and R/C107 MODELS. NOT the plastic badge, which is designed for later cars.
Cheers,
Gerry
