New to 500espot and thanks to RHW for showing me... Have spent time on other w124 boards but thought that posting here would be helpful as well.

Anybody tried to install Focal 165A3 3 Way Components in the front of a w124?

I am going to remove all OEM equipment and start from scratch including new head unit, front and rear speakers, amplifier and subwoofer. My 95 is equipped with active bass so my thought is to use the stock locations and find a dash or A-pillar spot for tweeter.

Based on reading the boards, it appears that these things might fit. My concerns are that that woofer and midrange are simply too big and deep or will not fit without a lot of modification to the stock locations:

1. woofer mounting depth of 2.60" and mounting diameter of 5.55"
2. midrange mounting depth of 2.17" and mounting diameter of 3.70"

For the active bass in the doors, the drop in depth is only 2". If you plan to use something with more depth, then your looking at custom fabrication. For the dash, you can easily fit a 4" coax there. Infinity Kappa's fit this location and butt up to the heating/cooling ducting (don't remember the depth). You can go deeper, but you would need to do a bit of work to the ducting.

5.25" will fit the rear locations, but because of the size, you will need to do a bit of sheet metal trimming to get them to sit flush.

FWIW, I run Infinity Kappa's in the front/rear stock locations and a slim mount Pioneer coax in the doors. Factory amp has been replaced with a small ADS amp for the door speakers. The Infinities are run off of deck power (Mosfet 50). Low end is handled with a Infinity Basslink T (self amplified). The headunit is the key to the sound system though, Pioneer Premier DEH-P980BT. The amount of DSP built into the headunit is key to getting the sound stage correctly setup, especially using the crappy factory speaker locations.

Thanks for the input. The depth is good to know so I have an idea before I start pulling things out. Have seen 6.5" subs that I thought would be great but they are 3 -3.5 inches deep. No Good!!!

2phast - I have read through your site as well. It is impressive and I can see that you have done a lot of work to your 500.
